Correlation between Macbook model numbers and defects...

Hello Macrumors.

I am a windows user. I have been waiting for the ibook to update for roughly 1 year, and now that the macbooks have come out i have become hesitant as to purchasing one due to the large number of complants on this board.
Recently i have had the idea that perhaps apple is 'fixing' these defects without official acknowledgement or public announcements.

I have however ordered a Macbook, it has not been delivered yet but from the email i have recieved the serial number is 4H6240....Someone on these boards has told me that the '24' is the week number.

I would like to see if the defects are decreasing as the 'weeks' progress.. So basically:

Please respond, with either a NO DEFECTS and the serial number, or
WITH DEFECTS and what kind (mooing, whine, very hot, broken, etc...) and the serial number

The week numbers are most important here, because you cant develop a relationship without them..

Thank you, hopefully we see the amount of defects declining as the week numbers increase, and it will help many prospective buyers.

EDIT: Mine is a CTO 1.83ghz, 1Gb, 60Gig...

where do you find you seria number? i just got mine (black, 1 gb ram, 120 gb hd) with no moos, whines or any other defects. i'm one happy camper

4H621 - no whine, no moo (well a little but i consider it normal fan operation), had a lid-close-not-really-in-sleep-mode issue but i 'fixed' it. overall no problems or defects.

serial number is on the box... and to the OP, you should update your post with a tally periodically.

click on about this mac on the apple menu, then click where it says your OSX verison right under the text that says Mac OS X. When you click it, it will cycle through different things. The serial number is one of them.

I would also be curious to hear if people with MBPs are seeing success with later models as well. Has the whine finally been address on the MBP?

MBP: Week 16 and mine has the whine and gets hot. Maybe not as hot as some have posted but warmer than my G4 powerbook 667.

Err...that's your Serial Number for warranty purposes. You don't want to go posting that around on the internet. Even if it is here. Your model number is usually on the bottom of your Mac. It's a lot short then your serial too.

No whining, No Mooing...


Temperature is actually pretty cool compared to many other temperatures posted. It idles at 53 centigrade and when I run yes > /dev/null it goes only up to 79 centigrade.

Only defect I can see is that the K key is sticky. If I press the key on the right side of it, it sticks down and stays down for a split second. It gets pretty annoying becauseyou dont feel like the key come back and you get confused. Or if you need to type k twice, it feels funny because you dont get a depression feeling the second time.


Another extremely minor defect is that the palm rest area is that the "paint job" has a a very small little piece of something under the black. So at one spot there is actually a little bump. However people say that this thing is ENTIRELY made out of plastic without a paint job, so that means the plastic has a defect on the palm rest?

week 22 17" MBP with no issues what so ever... 2 weeks old and i LOVE IT

My week 19 has every problem I've seen posted

-Whine
-Moo
-Case Bulge (left side, bottom)
-Trackpad button that won't click on one side
-Missing Bluetooth
Probably more I haven;t noticed.

Ok, i have been recording the data in a spread sheet, i just need more.. so far it seems week 21 has been all perfect... and so has week 24 i dont know what that '1' stood for in '4h6241' ?? any help? becaue mine had a 0

I've gone through two week 21 macbooks:

first one had moo
second one has a moo that isn't as loud...but there's plastic warping and a G key that is askew

= me very annoyed apple customer. I am planning to exchnage it soon but have delaying myself because it's such a hassle.

Week 21, mooing exists, little whine and an extremely small little hole on the cover with some silver material inside, but barely noticable otherwise perfect machine

My week 19 has every problem I've seen posted.

There is a part of me that wants to buy within the next week, but that clashes with the other part that reminds me time is on my side. I have patiently waited this long to replace my soon-to-be six-year old iMac G3 ... let's see which part of the brain chalks up a victory in this battle.

Err...that's your Serial Number for warranty purposes. You don't want to go posting that around on the internet. Even if it is here. Your model number is usually on the bottom of your Mac. It's a lot short then your serial too.

Haha yeah. I was assuming people would know not to post the entire thing. But that is a good point, do not post the entire serial number from that window.

So far the results of a +/- (where a no defect cancels out a defect) count show that most of you have Macbooks with no defects (at least in this thread so far) earlier it was showing a nice trend where the amount of 'perfect' macbooks seemed to go up (way up) at around week 21... BUT then a bunch more posts came and destroyed that hahahaha...
So really its looking like majority is no defects.. but the biggest problem is the Heat issue thus far..

KEEP POSTING! the more data (week number and defects/no defects) we can get the more accurately we can model this, ooOoOoo perhaps we can graph the results! ahahhaha

I would say this tread shows that it really is luck of the draw. My moo is hit and miss. Sometimes it is really noticable and other times it doesn't do it at all. And this is under heave loads too... strange. The whine is always there when idle or just browsing the web and e-mail.
