Their own army of engineering staff can use them

Well, if the trashcan has been discontinued I'm betting that Apple will get stuck with a few warehouses full of units, because no one who is even remotely in the loop is going to buy that box in late 2016.

They probably stopped making them in 2015 and are stubbornly waiting for the last few in the corner of the warehouse to sell before they mark them as discontinued (But a great success as every one they had sold)

I can see them repeating the line they used with the xServe. "We decided to stop selling it as no one was buying it".

You know the best way to help people buy a product? Advertise it.

http://www.apple.com/uk/mac/ - mentioned once, small icon at the top.

http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/browse/campaigns/education_pricing - MIA

I've never seen more than one in any brick and mortar shop.

People will not buy a product they know nothing about.

But then who wants a 3 year old computer with some components at 5 years, and pay the same price as you would have done at launch? Perhaps they're not advertising it because of what a massive embarrassment it is to have your current model be 3 years old.

Hopefully Apple aren't stupid enough to take people's current lack of interest as a dislike of the form factor; we still need a Mac Pro.

Hey, I want one... certainly for free! :p

But not for the current price. 50% will be about right, IMHO.

Even at 50% off I would flinch on the spec.

I just bought a pair of immaculate Boxed as new Late 2014 Z820s with over a year HP onsite warranty on them

Each has a spec of
1x Xeon E5-2630v2, 32Gb Ram, Quadro K2000, 4x4Tb 1125w PSUs, for £1000 all in

Put the ram and extra cpu in one machine sold the K2000s and 4x4Tbs and bought a GTX1070 and HyperX 480Gb PCIe SSD with the cash from that.

So now for £1000 I have
Z820 with 2x E5-2630v2, 64Gb, GTX1070, 480Gb PCIe SSD

And the bonus of a barebones machine with no ram or cpus to use as spares should anything go Titsup in the future.

I really wish they would release an official OSX for the HP Zs, its what the nMP should have been

I'm not even sure they would want them...

probably wasn't too clear on that.

I meant to say that I wasn't sure that Apple engineers still want a trashcan nMP.

I am certain that they would gladly take a tricked out HP z workstation that properly / officially ran OS X. I know I would take one in a heartbeat

There's a used 12-core on eBay for less than half of new. The price still looks high to me for what you're getting.

Given the closed box nature and thermal issues of the nMP I wouldn't feel comfortable buying a used one. The last time I checked a GPU replacement is in the neighborhood of $1000 and as those stocks dwindle the price will probably go up.

Well, if the trashcan has been discontinued I'm betting that Apple will get stuck with a few warehouses full of units,.

Apple doesn't have warehoused full of Mac Pros . Or Macs . Or iPhones . Or iPads.

Apple works extremely hard to make stuff at approximately the same rate as people order it ( except for large scale launch events where they aim under.... and only a temporary staging warehouses which will predictably be quickly emptied.).

The flaw is that many folks have of "well Apple has to lower prices because this is old" is largely based on flawed premise that Apple is sitting on inventory that is burning a hole in their balance sheet. That don't have it ( relative to the size and scope of there logitics there are some staged but those flows). Apple tends to pay for materials to suppliers and get the revenue back from the customers in the same quarter (on slower moving stuff... on fast moving stuff in the same month).

Apple isn't going to get stuck with much because as people stop ordering so will Apple (from their suppliers). There is a weekly meeting where the top execs look at the sales of everything. So it is being tracked and when the "slow down" triggers they see it. If demand drops they drop supply and the price equilibrium point doesn't have to move much.

Amazon is somewhat famous for jumping the gun on these types of changes.

This wasn't Amazon. The seller on the funky page wasn't Amazon but a seller who uses Amazon as a marketplace.

I might predict that the "discontinued" returns.

eventually yeah. Every specific Mac version on Amazon is going to hit discontinued if let the clock run long enough.

But whether that comes with a "new version here" link or not would remain to be seen.

At some point there will be a "super old" that points to 'newer model that is "just ordinary old" links like this one.

https://www.amazon.com/Apple-MB464LL-Desktop-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B001U0OFQO/

There is a certain amount of hodgepodge to Amazon's listings once get off the high volume path on the newest objects.
Why this is being leverage to illuminate "deep insight" into the Mac Pro is beyond me.

This. Want. Yes.

why dont you guys just make the switch? Mac Pro is clearly neglected, apple dont care about the pro market anymore and you never know any of their plans....they dont reveal anything, so you have no chance to plan any purchase.

THe HP Z looks like a nice rig! Or just build your own. . I made the switch recently for my work computer...gonna stick with apple toys for now (iphone, ipads etc) but I dont want to play cat an mouse with my workstation or pay out of my nose because apple has certain sale rules that makes them refuse to lower price on hardware they never update.
Get used to Windows 10 and you will notice has just as many good things to offer as OS X. Pros and cons, but the good thing about Windows is that the userbase is a lot bigger so if something do annoy you, you can be pretty sure a barrage of people on Google share the same opinion and you can find a fix.

I'd rather stay in the OSX environment. I simply prefer it. Also don't want to deal with HFS on Windows. Plus I still use some apps that are Mac only.

whats the problem with HFS on windows, Just install a simple app and you can use both HFS and ntfs, takes 2 seconds.
When you say apps, you mean like important programs or simple apps. If so, theres definately a replacement for most small apps. At least I have not experienced anything I cannot do exactly the same on PC.
Oh well hard to turn old habits I guess...

While I've moved to Premiere for most of my Red work, I still use FCP7 and DVDSP quite a bit. I simply can't stand Windows. I know Win 10 has improved, but I still hate it.

I use both OSX and Windows for more than 10 years. Windows 10 is still a nightmare. Unlike previous Windows, you need to try everything to stop it from stealing your privacy. There are huge number of settings you need to do.

And the worst thing is the latest update. It won't let you disable some of them, including Cortana. Windows 10 anniversary update will install Windows store Apps for you WITHOUT asking for your approval. When you create new user, it will install different suggested apps for you. AND YOU CAN'T STOP IT!

The only way is to stop using W10 Pro version and switch to Enterprise version in which you can stop this with Group Policy. But you still need to change a lot of settings again in order to have a normal Windows.

And Windows 10 is still a mess. There are two versions of Preference (Control Panel and Settings), two versions of backup (Win7 Backup and File History). And none of these are as simple as OS X. And there are unlimited no. of entry points to for Windows setting. This is also very very confusing. (For example, right click start button, right click task bar, right click notification, right click desktop, or via control panel/settings).

And for VPN, you now have to pass many windows in order to make a connection.

In all, OSX is still elegant.

While I agree to all of that, its not a valid reason for me to stay with OSX. Hardware and options to buy what you need when you need is more important than the backup format or small inconsistencies to a few button clicks. Those are things you easily get used to over time. And to be honest, if you have a good worksetup with Dropbox or similar, the Timecapsule is something you shouldnt need to use very often. Personally I think I never needed to use it, it was just there to make me feel confident that I have a backup.
Anyway, if those UE parts of OSX is more important to you than a powerful machine, then the question is if you actually need a Mac Pro in the first place....And if that is the case, then of course I would say OSX and Mac is a better option.

Hardware options are important too.

I am seeing many mac users here believe Windows is good to use. This is not entirely true. So I just want to tell them Windows 10 is not without faults. And Windows 10 have more problems to fix, especially windows drivers. Many hardware run fine with Win7, but there are problems with Windows 10.

I am using MacPro 07 for years. If Apple really stops it, it is likely I will switch too. I will wait to see if there are new Macs in Oct or early in next year.

Of course, OSX is a lot more smooth sailing than WIndows. And if you dont know how to deal with drivers etc...you are bound to a world of pain with Windows. But if you know how to solve all those things, which I dont think is that difficult to figure out, you get on fine. But it does feel clunky, and in the current state of OSX vs. Windows I think 80% of the world using computers should use Macs not the other way around. But for Pro Users, users that need to do heavy tasks the tables have turned completely. ANd for me that is the case. I rather have a smooth 3d program or being able to push a ton of models through ELement 3d in after effect than automatic driver updates or a user friendly backup program. But my wife will stick with the golden Macbook - which is what seems to be Apples primary target groupd these days.

Look people. I am switched to W10 few weeks ago. OSX is a great OS. But its not perfect. W10 is a great OS. But its not perfect. Fact is, that I was able to do my job just as fine, as i did on OSX. Adobe is not different, in my case. And my hardware is AWESOME.. it flies, it screams power, it eats my 14GB Photoshop file in a minute, and i can work in the file like its a 2mb photo.

I had three options with Apple.
1) Stick to my mac, with all the loading pain, trouble in my profile, slow disks, etc.
2) Go for an expensive old smal form factor Mac Pro, outdated, my config = 5000+ euro and still not a good config.*
3) Go for an even older 5.1 or go hackingtosh.

All these 3 options are for me a no-go. No... just No! I like OSX. But i am not going to do all this trouble just to stay with a OS while there is W10 which is just as good/bad as OSX.

So here we go. Me working in W10 for some weeks now and actually, i am beginning to like it more than i thought I would be. Spend 2600 on my hardware.. and its eating the **** of any 6 core mac you throw at me. And thats it. Its nothing more than that. A tool. I dont care anymore how it looks like cause almost every good computer case is clean, nice, quiet.

So, for those who are still on the edge... go for it! Take control. ;)

(*= i dont need dual gpu / where is nvidia with cuda / i dont need xeon / i dont need ecc mem / apple pricing = crazy.)

Agree with everything you say. It's just as how I feel it. And it's deliberating to finally have som control over my hardware again. Pcs don't have great resell value but then again I don't need to update this every second year with a more update machine I can just manually replace parts as a go along.
Ps and if you need dual gpu you can just buy a second gpu and SLI them ;) don't need to be ordered that way. I have room for a second gtx 1080 if I would ever feel like it, but I doubt it.

Precisely, thats it. Who cares about resell value... you want to do your work now! You live here and now, not in the future. I dont care about how much my system bring up in some years. I only spent "just 2600" on it. It is making money all-ready. In the meanwhile its kicking ass. I want it as fast as possible in the limits of my tools (Adobe). And when a new piece of hardware comes around the corner, I buy it an stick it in my PC :D

Now go get that PC :D

I'm going to make a prediction: The Pro market for Apple will be served by iMac / MacBook Pro with EGPUs.
CPUs are getting more and more irrelevant for Pro Apps. Any of the Current iMac has enough CPU power for the Pro Apps like FCPX etc.

The GPUS are the Problem. Sierra already supports EGPU and El Capitan was able to support with some trickery.
I love the iMac. It was the best Computer I ever had and I only switch to Mac Pro because of GPU.

As soon as EGPU is officially easy to do and Thunderbolt 3 is out on the iMac etc., I'm going back to iMac. Heck, you can already do it. But a GTX 980 Ti in a case, or two, or three.

A standalone eGPU from Apple doesn't make much sense to me though. It doesn't feel like a solution Apple would make. It's almost a concession some of their machines aren't up to it. I think it's more likely they'll do eGPU embedded in a display.

Yes, yes, you are right. But I think they will do EGPU in a 5K Display. It is the only way to currently do it. And leave the EGPU to 3rd party. I admit: this is more or less just what I am hoping for :D :D :D
