This is weird, because my friend purchased his iPad with like 710 in cash, and the rest on the card. I saw the receipt, too.

nope that isnt wierd your friend used a card and cash, the reason for the card is most likely to enforce the 2 per person.

This is most likely to prevent the flood of them ending up on ebay and being shipped overseas.

I do feel sorry for those overseas who buy them from ebay at 300 more than they are worth, since thier warranty is void.

personally i dont like a lot of apple's policy, but there is probably a good chance that the ipad and ipad 3g doesnt have all the govt approvals they need to be sold in most countries.

Any electronic device must meet the codes and laws of the country it is sold in. So just cause the usa's FCC says it is ok, doesnt mean the german or french equivalents are going to say ok

No, it IS weird because OP offered to pay part of the balance with his credit card to verify identity.

I don't see where this makes an ounce of sense. Why would you feel sorry for people that were WILLING to pay more? It's not a law requirement for people to buy an iPad, it's a toy and it's a choice.

well he didnt say that in his first post, , yes he did say it later, but with the temperament he is showing , i doubt he offered politely and they way he said he was willing didnt mean he actually offered verbally.

Plus Gift cards are not cash or cash equivalents such as charge cards are. Every month or 2 you will see some states passing new laws on how to try to regulate them.

And unfortunately for some they caught in the middle.

But i bet if he used it to order online and set up a user account at apple he wouldn't have had a problem.

I can't blame Apple as they can do as they wish.

I cancelled my Amex card long ago as many retailers would not even take my Amex credit card! It is visa or master card that aree accepted everywhere.

They cannot accept the gift card because it's is untraceable. Same reason they can't take cash.

FYI the FTC can't do anything about this; and Amex sure isn't going to do anything about it either.
Thank you! The FTC and Amex do not regulate this area. Seems people just don't get it.
Again, I don't care WHY they are doing it. And if I want to buy an iPad on a credit card which is traceable and then put it on eBay for $10k, I'm perfectly able to do so. Again, money is money. Why am I able to buy a macbook with a gift card but not an iPad. This makes no sense, but I have AMEX working on it.
You may not care why they're doing it but you sure care that they did. The reason you cannot buy this particular item with a gift card is because they're putting a limit on iPad purchases, at least for right now.

It was an Amex gift card. The guy isn't talking about a ****ing credit card. If he were this thread would not exist.

why didnt you just buy a $1000 Apple Gift card with your $1000 AMEX gift card right there in the the store and then use the Apple Store gift card to buy the iPad?

That would be because they weren't accepting apple giftcards either.

IT IS against the law to sell me a gift card advertised as redeemable in my retail stores and then refuse to accept it in my retail stores. I dont care how smart you think you are, thats fraud and ILLEGAL.

But they are not stopping you from buying other things in the store with it, they are limiting what can be bought with it and that's very legal and not fraudulent.

no it is not illegal please provide a link that states gift cards are cash equivalents.
Gift cards are not cash nor cash equivalents. And they do not have to accept thier gifts cards provided it is clearly stated

And i doubt Apple would say they control what you buy with even thier own gift cards if it was illegal to do so

Note: Apple Gift Cards cannot be redeemed at the iTunes Music Store. Purchase an iTunes Music Card instead. Apple reserves the right to change at any time the products you can purchase with gift cards and to limit the use of gift cards in its discretion. See the Gift Card Terms and Conditions, below.

DOES ANYBODY NOT READ? THEY ARE NOT TAKING GIFT CARDS (EVEN APPLE GIFT CARDS) FOR IPADS. THEY WILL NOT TAKE CASH EITHER. I'M NOT STUPID AND WOULD HAVE DONE THIS TRANSACTION IF IT WERE POSSIBLE. AS I SAID, AMEX IS WORKING ON IT, AND ONE WAY OR ANOTHER I WILL GET AN IPAD FROM APPLE WITH MY GIFT CARD. AMEX MIGHT BUY THE GIFT CARD BACK, AS THEY ADVERTISE IT CAN BE USED ANYWHERE AMEX CARDS ARE ACCEPTED. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE CASE AND AMEX IS JUST AS MUCH AT FAULT, AND I'M CONFIDENT THEY WILL RESOLVE IT.

It isn't a credit card. It doesn't have your name on it. It isn't the same as an Amex credit card. It is my understanding that 51% of the transaction has to be paid for with a credit card.

I'm really sorry. I hope you can figure something out. :(

By the way, Amex will actually exchange my gift card for a personalized one that does have my name on it just like a credit card. According to Apple, they still will not accept it as payment.

this must be certain stores only. because thats against the law.

So we've established that you skipped reading the thread and you don't know the law. Just in case you're still feeling like you're on a roll, the FTC doesn't govern matters like this either.

Unlikely as to the first and doubtful as to the second.

Apple is right here

I'm with Apple here. Like any company they have their ups and downs but I'm 100% behind them trying to have more is stores for customers and less on eBay and kijiji for crazy prices. If you want to blame someone here, it's not Apple. It's the people taking advantage of the limited supply.

Omg something happened that makes me angry it must be illegal let's sue!!!!11111

Requiring someone to use a credit card or debit card is asinine. So they want to limit sales to two per person. They can just as easily use your ID. To the person who said they need to access to multiple states ID databases. No they don't they can just assign a number to that ID for their internal purposes.

Problem solved now people can pay with cash, gift cards what ever. I bet if another company were doing this you people would not be okay with it but because it is Apple it is okay.

The people selling them on ebay are probably big operations that do have multiple credit cards or they pay people to buy them for them. So this policy does nothing but hurt the person who isn't trying to resale.

To the original poster, I hope it works out for you and you get to use your gift card to purchase it.
