I have been playing this game for years on my Dell XPS Laptop.

Just yesterday, I purchased a 17 inch MacBook Pro. Amazing timing or what!?

I am a total noob at this game having never played it before and I was hoping someone here could point me to a website or give me some pointers as to how to join games and how to play. How do I know what lobbies to join?

Just join any with a low ping. They all play differently, some are the classic Counter Strike modes, some are platforming, some are mini games, some are jailbreak, just join heaps and favourite ones you like.

Then this isn't the game for you :D. I'm super pro hardcore l33t at HL2 Deathmatch, L4D1+2 and TF2 but I can barely keep my kill to death ratio 1:1 in CS Source. The skill comes from mastering maps and using pinpoint accuracy. And even then you're going to be up against cheaters.

I'm loving COD4, which I'd had for a month. It's my first FPS purchase. My kill/death ratio was prob 1:5, if not even more nonthreatening, at the beginning. Now it's about 1:2. Maybe at some point I'll be good enough that I'll be accused of hacking.

So the difficulty hasn't detracted from me loving the game. Plus, I'm playing mostly against people who have completely leveled up. I still prefer it to TF2, which I've had for a couple weeks, and fair much better in.

But for anyone who's played Call of Duty 4 and CS:Source, could you share what major differences to expect? I'll likely just get it while the sale is on. $6.80 is nothing, but it wouldn't hurt knowing how different CS:Source is. Having not played it, it just looks like COD4 with graphics settings set at 2004, which I know is surely an oversimplification. Thanks.

Counterstrike, and then Counterstrike:Source was for a loooooong time, the single most competitive FPS in the world. It was the game used by the top pro gaming leagues. Back in college and grad school, I used to play on a CAL-M team, which is one step below the guys who are one step below the pros. I used to regularly be accused of hacking on public servers but even against the really talented amateurs on their servers, wouldn't even be able to maintain 1:20.

Last time I played was two years ago and even on the average servers, got whipped and could barely maintain 1:1.

This is the game that essentially put Razer and the gaming divisions of Logitech & MS into business. It's not exactly newb friendly.

Wow, I'm downloading this now and I'm silly excited. I'm so scared. Haha. I knew I kept my Razer Lachesis for a reason.

I don't think I've ever been this tuned up for a Mac software release, ever.

Is it multiplayer only ?

I only played a bit of COD to see what all the fuss was about. Yea, totally different games. COD has RPG-like perk system and your 'stuff' carries over. CS Source starts fresh with every game. COD isn't trying to be realistic, CS Source is, which makes it very hard.

It's a lot of fun though. One of my fave multiplayer games but I don't play it much because TF2 (IMO) is much better.

There are loads of mods available too (the core engine is almost 7 years old after all, though it doesn't look it) so even if you don't like the main game you can always do something else with it.

That's interesting. COD being really the first FPS I've really played for an extended time, I was under the impression this must be one of most realistic FPSes out there. So your comment gives me some perspective. Now I'm little more curious about CS:S. Thanks.

So tell me peeps...

Would anyone be interested in setting up a little MacRumors private server. Few competitions? Country V Country? Some friendly banter* , some competitive gloating?

Of course, I would need to purchase a machine capable of running CS:S, but that is a completely irrelevant point ;)

* DIE YOU CHEATING B******* Mwa-hahahaha

Wow. So last night I played while being pretty smashed (if it wasn't obvious from my previous post on this thread) and I got tore up.

If enough people are interested (10+) and someone else organizes, I'll host an MR CS:S server for a few hours this Fri-Sat.

Let's shoot for a 3 hour window each day.

The following hours (CDT) are no go on both days:

0600-1200
1900-2300

Otherwise, if everyone can agree to a time by noon Friday, we'll give it a go.

If someone who's done server configs before wants to help out, that'd be great because it's been years since I've done this.

Hrm. Not much interest, but I wonder if there are any lurkers.

I will host tonight, starting at 12 midnight EDT for 1.5 hours. If there's enough players, I'll leave the server running till 0600 EDT. Otherwise, it's going down some time between 0130 and 0200.

I haven't decided on the max # players, but it won't be more than 12. My upstream sucks and the connection likely won't handle more than that.

Shakzilla, let's try to sort out the internal mic issue. Likely, I'll have the server up some time around 2330.

Details will be posted here around that time, including the PW for the server.

Oh, and someone else needs to figure out the details (map cycles, start money, etc.)/drum up more interest/start a new thread.

When I set one up just now and chose spectate, it's just empty. When I set up and play, it's all bots. How can I set up and get people to join, while not playing myself?

BTW, I called it CS:S Mac Rumors, 18 players.

Ahh, I miss CAL. Remember EFGaming?

Sorry, but can't say that I do. Maybe after my time? Put it to you this way, I was sitting on a 9600 baud satphone modem when Dynamic Weapon Pricing came out for CSS and I only got to read about it because the time I made it back to a gameworthy connection, everyone had turned it off.

No Bunny hoppers. 16k start of round. fy_iceworld. 24/7 ftw!!

EDIT: Anyone else using a mac mini to play? How many fps are you getting?

I uninstalled CS:S from my 2yr old (pretty decent gaming rig) PC because the new update (which prolly all Mac users will get too) ruined the game for me (I've been playing CS since 1.3).

Anyhow, I usually got a 100ish FPS but now it regularly dropped to 50ish when a server is crowded (performance drops I consider normal when there's 32 ppl running and gunning, but this random mini-mini freezes just made me rage :p) + With what I've heard about source engine performance on OS X...*Shivers* I feel for you guys ;)

Still, I'd like to try it out some day on someone else's mac because my mbp 13" prolly can't handle it on decent settings (yeah I like some minor eye-candy).

On the difference of COD4/MW2/CS:S : I found the feeling of every FPS other than CS:S to be rather awkward.

- COD4 is IMO unbalanced as hell when the choppers/airplane attacks come in. I couldn't spawn without getting hammered 3/4th of the time :D

-MW2 really fixed this aspect but the speed of movement and swapping guns feels really slow compared to CS:S (I uninstalled MW2 together with CS:S but it's really a fine and balanced game)

-Oh yeah, learn about 'reg' or bullet registry in CS:S ! Read up on server tickrates and rates etc. e.g. net_graph [0-4?] will really help you out when you're biting the dust because none of your shots reg well :)

Personally I hate most 66 tick servers and prefer the almighty 100 tick servers but then again, it really depends on a lot of factors if you want the best gaming experience

P.S. Are games actually playable with mouseacceleration? Just plugging a mouse into my mbp and strolling around OS X feels totally retarded to me :p

just my 2c (but really: read up on hitboxes, rates, reg etc!)

Agreed. It doesn't happen too much to me, but when I get killed immediately by an air attack upon spawning, it does illicit serious Hulk rage.

I may like that slower movement. I'm interested in Bad Company 2 as I've read comments about it being slower than COD4; I think I've heard the same about Medal of Honor. The franticness isn't necessarily a bad thing in COD4, but when most everyone around me are long time veterans who've long sinced maxed out (Level 55), the speed makes it that much harder to be competitive with them. Meanwhile I fair well in the rare occassion there's a server with a lower max player limit--less players, slower pace.

But MW2 has no dedicated servers. I don't fully appreciate what that means, but I know it's mostly, if not entirely, a negative.

Great link. Beyond my level of concern or expertise, but still interesting.
