I returned mine this past Saturday and got a new one. I have not had any issues with the new one at all. If you guys are having this issue I would recommend returning it and getting a new one.

Yeah it's happening but it's totally random ...idk I Don't Feel like going to the store again a 3rd time lol plus a good screen

Mine does it very randomly also.

I wish I hadn't had such exceptionally great Apple products in the many years leading up to the present. Apple's quality is quite variable lately. Especially when you buy as much hardware as i do.

I like to enjoy buying new Macs and iOS devices. Thats half the fun as an enthusiast.

Conversely in todays world of new Apple products it's a crap-shoot... Just like gambling in Las Vegas. Never being one to enjoy gambling, I am buying fewer new things from Apple.

If i cannot be assured of receiving the quality that was once the norm, suddenly Nexus, Samsung and LG smartphones and tablets are looking good, filling my needs very nicely, and all at reasonable prices.

Mine has just done 4 big cracks in the space of about 2 or 3 minutes. Today was the deadline for me being able to make a return (bought from apple.com). I've just called them and arranged that.

Interestingly when I said what the problem was they instantly said "OK, we'll arrange a replacement". When I called about an obviously faulty iPhone 6 I was told to try reboots, etc, etc. None of that this time. May just be the luck of the draw or may be word is getting through and they know this is an issue?

I get the audio pop also...

I think it's software related because some of my apps don't seem compatible with the new speakers...

Also noticed with the "Family Guy" app, the in-game music won't play until a notification pops up, like the low battery warning.

I'm not saying that it's not software related. But, you would think that more people would be seeing(hearing) this issue as well. I was having the same issue until I exchanged mine for a new one. If it were software related I would expect to have the same issue with the new iPad.

I'm in touch with someone who has this problem. They say their apps are closed so if it were a software problem the closed apps should solve the issue. It seems more of a limited case defect issue.

I have noticed this crackling noise randomly, about 3 or 4 times, when between applications. Might give Apple a call.

That doesn't really mean anything. Its a software problem, as in iOS drivers, it has nothing to do with specific apps. The sound can occur when a message notification or some other system sound is played, not just apps.

I'v seen this before or the years. A common thing is when the speaker, normally powered off to save battery when not in use, will be powered up for a few milliseconds before playing around. If the length isn't long enough, screen pop or crackle can be heard, needing a patch. I don't know for sure, but that is more likely than "limited" defects.

I went a week between pops. Sometimes it disappears for days before reoccurring.

That was my original thought too, but it happens too randomly and sometimes not when sound is coming out. I have seen it happen a few times when tapping a field in safari to input text on a form.
I have also seen it pop mere seconds after a sound was played. My original thought was a driver issue in iOS, but I am now leaning more toward hardware defect.

I did too, but it came back many times, the more I used it. It was always as a result of using it, never did I hear it when my notifications were sounding, many, many times throughout the week while my iPad was on the desk.
I took mine back today. $800 and having this issue as well as a couple of minor defects in the bezel area of the screen and sharp edges on the iPad that are not there in the display models is enough for me to wait for a few months to see if these issues are fixed.

If it was a software issue I would think they would have found it during the testing of the iOS for the air 2. I am a bit disappointed with Apple, this is not up to there high standards. And the air 2 is so awesome speed wise that I don't want anything else after using it. It is incredibly fast. A air 1 is not even close, no offense to air 1 users, but it is that fast.
I truly hope they get this resolved soon.

I have had the popping sound on my new iPad Air 2. I believe it could be an iOS issue. I find it happens when I have certain apps open in the background. When I close those apps it does not pop. Someone asked why it pops while charging. Don't forget if you have apps open, and have notifications switched on, the popping sound could be occurring because if this.

Ive noticed this also... For me it was the "Family Guy" app causing the pop.

Since then the app has been updated and no more popping sound...

My first iPad Air 2 (Wi-Fi 128 Silver) did this crackling thing within seconds of turning it on and did it maybe 10 times in the 5 days I owned it. I replaced it with a cellular version as I wanted the GPS chip in my ipad so I could use it with navigation apps and this device has never made the sound at all not even once and I have had it for weeks now.

I experienced a similar issue yesterday when working in iMovie. I normally use headphones but was doing a quick bit of editing and just using the speaker. I only happened with sound effects and it was like it was powering up the speaker to make the sound. I'll try and test a bit more tonight but it may be worth checking things out in iMovie if you think you have an issue since it is a stock Apple app.

I had an iPad Air 2 which made this sound a lot. It had other issues also like freezing at least once a day even after doing an iOS restore so I returned it. I got another Air 2 a couple of days ago. It's had no freezing issues and had made no crackling sound until it made it once today. So it's not clear to me yet if it's a software issue or a hardware problem. By comparison, an iPhone 6, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3 have not made this sound under 8.1, so it's not just an 8.1 issue but something specific to the Air 2.

Does anyone who exchanged theirs for a new one have any updates as to if the new one pops too? I really like the speed of the air 2 but do not want this popping issue.

Has exchanging eliminated the problem and if so how long ago did you exchange? Mine was very random and went a week in between pops, of course I was not using it a lot at the time?

There's a couple people over on the Apple support forum who have exchanged 3 times and still get it...

I hate quoting myself but it keeps this reply shorter for me. I too have now had one cracking noise the other day shortly after waking the device, so my cellular one is not immune to the issue as I intimated above.

I had mine replaced last night after making an appointment at the Genius Bar. So far the new one has not made the popping sound.

Yeah I don't think cellular/wifi models matter mine was a cellular 64gb and it popped more that Rice Krispies! :D

I am waiting but am tempted to just go buy an air 1 and wait till the air 3 comes out. No telling when apple will acknowledge this publicly and resolve it... I hope it is soon. I like my iPad 4 but I would like more speed and storage...

So far mine only had a pop and crackle sound with two games, it never happens unless I play these games. One is Helsings Fire HD and I forgot the other because I deleted it, something with pirates.

Had the pop happen twice in under 5 min today after a week of no popping. Both happened when I pressed on a text input and the keyboard came up. 100% battery charge.

iOS 8.1.1

It has been a couple of weeks since I have exchanged mine for a new one and I have not heard a popping or crackling sound one time. If this were indeed software related I would STILL hear the crackling sound since the new iPad Air 2 is running the same software. This problem is NOT software related. If you are having this issue don't hesitate in exchanging it for a new one.

It may be a combination of both. The issue doesn't happen during a sound, it happens when there is no sound and then a sound happens e.g. a sound effect. This is likely a cause of the speaker being powered to provide the sound and it may because the Air 2 has more powerful speakers so there is no power supplied to them when idle. This is a common issue with speakers and it may be how Apple deal with the power saving side of things - speculation on my part of course.
