I do think Mac2Sell underestimates prices, especially for PPC models.

It's better to be low than high, I think.

I couldn't believe when Mac2Sell estimated my 1.5GHz G4 Mini at $130. I looked at the average selling price on Craigslist and Ebay, and it came out to be twice that amount.

Btw, do refurbished Macs have a lower selling price than a Mac that was purchased new on Craigslist or Ebay? I am curious to hear if people who buy Macs on Craigslist or Ebay care if the Mac was refurbished when it was purchased.

I'd use CL or eBay, but it may be a BTO, it may not be the right model, etc.

How would you tell the difference? I wouldn't buy a new Mac from anywhere but Apple or an authorized reseller.

Dear OP,

I think to do this right you would have to calculate precise model and upgrades into the list.

You would do better cruising eBay's "completed listing" search to see what the actual selling prices of used Apples are.

In other words, it would take you a lot of time and effort to make this an accurate graph or listing. Right off the bat, your Powermac g5 prices are off by about a thousand dollars for the Quad. I should know, I have sold 5 PMG5s in the past two months.

P.S. I went to Craigslist after MR just now and someone had a 1.42ghz Mac Mini with airport/bluetooth 80gb hard drive, combo drive, 1 gig ram plus all boxes and discs and accessories for ...

80 bucks.

Because he read that "mac2sell" had it listed for 90 bucks, so he lowered it to 80 to undercut 'mac2sell"...

I felt sorry for the guy and explained that just the hard drive and ram alone would fetch that amount and that mac2sells LIES.

Of course, I could have bought it for myself and ripped him off but I was feeling the Mac love.

Mac Depreciation Guide Update

As you may ore may not know, I started a Mac Depreciation Guide last month.

I'd like to share it with you, so attached is a .pdf and the original .numbers of each spreadsheet. I think the results for the unibody models are interesting.

It's been totally revamped. I changed the configuration of a few charts and added some new formulas. I also gave each model its own spreadsheet, and each "trim level" its own sheet. Also, this revamped version only includes the most recent revisions of Macs. Future revisions and models will be added as they become available, and will not replace the current ones in the guide.

Feedback is appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Shake 'n' Bake-

This is a really cool idea and work you've got going. Thanks for sharing all of it with the community. You should PM Doctor Q or some other mod and talk about creating a "Seller's Guide" just like how there's a "Buyer's Guide".

Again, this is cool.

Thanks. I'll think about PMing someone tomorrow.

I'm glad the new thread was merged with the current one. I could only find the archive of this one.

I decided not to add areas for eBay; I'm still going off Mac2Sell. If you object to that, please say so. This is primarily a feedback-based project.

I think the selling price fluctuates greatly on ebay or craigslist - especially if the seller knows of flaws but does not disclose them or if they are also selling "bundled" software with the mac.

Mac2Sell might lowball their prices, but they are more consistent. This is after all is a guide, not a strictly-adhered-to rule with no exceptions. Maybe an asterik stating that ¨you might receive more or less for your individual sale depending upon several various independent factors not looked at in this guide¨ would be a good idea.

I PM'd Doctor Q with the following message.

In this thread, killerrobot suggests adding a sellers' guide to either the current Buyers' Guide or making a new section.

This Sellers' Guide would utilize my Depreciation Guide to help others determine what a good price is for their Mac. So far, the Depreciation Guide has only two months worth of data, but there are some patterns emerging. Within two years, I think this Depreciation Guide would be excellent at predicting the value of a Mac in the future.

All the values are from Mac2Sell.net. I felt this was a better place to get values from than eBay or Craigslist because the computers on those sites may be a BTO model or have software bundled with them. I do feel, however, Mac2Sell underestimates the values of Macs, especially PPC models. In my opinion, it is better to be a bit low than to be way too high.

Thanks for reading.

Seems ok, but its not that hard to figure out wht your Mac is worth by way of Ebay, Apple refurb store etc.

I guess, but you get graphs and better organization in my solution.

And, this guide, in the future, will be able to accurately predict a model's value in a given amount of time. Neither eBay or Apple offer predictions.

Just a quick update:

Haven't received a reply from Doctor Q yet, but that's not the end of the world.

I assure that using my name in the pm didn't speed up the process at all.
He's probably thinking who the hell is that..:p

He would probably have to talk with other mods and arn and who knows who else before any response will be given.

Sorry, I just have to update.

I requested a read receipt, but I haven't gotten confirmation of the message being read. So I suspect that either Doctor Q hasn't gotten to it yet, or he just doesn't care to respond.

Think I should send one to arn?

I didnt read the whole thread, so forgive me if this has been mentioned, but i would be more interested in a list that shows depreciation each year. I doubt that they depreciate by a set % each year, but rather on a bell curve like pattern. Does Mac2Sell keep a database of what those same models were worth a year ago or two years ago? That would be a big help in drawing an accurate depreciation graph.

Check post #34. I've completely changed it.

Hmmm... his last activity was today, but maybe he´s just busy.
Perhaps just re-sending it to through the contact us link at the bottom of the page would be best under the header site feedback.
After that, I would just let it be and wait untill they get back in touch with you.

Doctor Q, it turns out, did reply earlier and for some reason I didn't get that PM.

He did suggest, however, that I make a Mac Guide that contains my information. I am going to get going on that immediately.

September issue now on stands.

I'm struggling to make an introduction for the guide page that doesn't use "I" or "me" a lot. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I can come up with the subcategorys' structure pretty easily, however.
