So how does this sound for my Handbrake settings for great quality SD DVDs:
Select AppleTV preset
I use 2-pass with turbo 1st pass
And then change the CODEC to AVC/H.264 Video/ AAC + AC3 Audio

Anything else I should be worrying about changing to have the best looking SD video possible for my AppleTV. I'm not worried about file size... Thanks guys, this thread has been such a great help for me!

Whoa, okay if you are not getting the AVC/H.264 Video/ AAC + AC3 Audio codec when you click on the appleTV preset in HB, then you need to update your presets (sorry, its not done automagically ... yet) Just go to Presets -> Update Built in Presets and voila, they will all be updated. Now the AppleTV preset will use AVC/H.264 Video/ AAC + AC3 Audio.

There is one other caveat ( this is all on the HandBrake forums, btw) in the preferences, under Advanced you will see "Enable 64 bit mp4 checkbox". Turn that on. The deal is, with the new audio track added in, it is much easier to approach a 4 GB mp4 file. So, unless you want to crash, you need to enable 64 bit mp4 if you have a movie approaching 3 hrs with the atv preset. You will notice a new checkbox now will show in the main window so you can turn it on or off like any other setting. As well it's state will be recorded by any appleTV custom presets you decide to make.

Why was it hidden by the prefs before ? Simple, until the atv2 a 64 bit mp4 really would only play on a computer, no other apple device including the atv1 could play it. So I hid the option to enable it in the prefs, so that people wouldn't accidentally enable it as it was a very niche feature. Plus without the added bitrate of the ac3 dd track in the appletv encodes, even LOTR would still stay under the 4GB limit of a 32 bit mp4.

I know its a bit weird, but we are all adjusting to the new wall banging format and what its implications are. :)

The video quality sure seems better too, but maybe that's my imagination.
Some of it might be the placebo effect, but we did drop in the latest rev of x264 (the h.264 encoder) and it truly doesnt suck ;) Kudos has to go to that project to be sure.

ok dyna, just to clarify. The 64 bit pref option warns about not being able to stream to :apple:TV if this enabled. This won't be a problem with :apple:TV2? and it warns about ipods also?

Correct. On all accounts. I should have removed the warning since atv2 in fact works fabulous with 64 bit. iPods do not. This happens when we are trying to get something like this out the door asap :)

Realize that you do not *have* to use the 64 bit mp4. But if your movie length * bitrate pushes the file size over 4 GB, it will crash and not work on anything.

Also, to be clear the checkbox in the prefs, just enables a checkbox in the main window, which you can then use to turn the option on/off per encode if you like. Its kind of like a double safety if you will.

... and yes, I will change that in the next release.

Has anyone tried using just the AC3 for 5.1 and streaming across N. Since I create separate 480x res 400 bitrate files for my iPod and don't play anything on my iMac I would only need the one audio track, but I would prefer to stream than sync.

Also. What bitrate for the movie. I typically dumb it down to 1500 bitrate at the 720 or 853 anamorphic settings as I find that I can't see a difference to the 2000 or 2500 bitrate, at least on a 46" DLP.

You mean using AC3 5.1 and AC3 Passthrough for your audio settings? If so yes. It works perfectly fine streaming. My AEBS is G and it works perfectly fine streaming 2000 - 2500 2 passes depending on the movie.

What does "HTTP Optimized MP4" mean?

The resulting file is somehow optimized for streaming, though I don't know what that entails, I just read that somewhere on the handbrake forums.

Does anyone know why when I use the AppleTV preset (AAC + AC3) I don't get 5.1 discrete in the resulting file? I suspect it's because it's an older DVD ("Fight Club") where the "default" (track 1) was DPL and the DD 5.1 was track 2. Anyone else get this? This is on the Windows version, btw (just ordered a 1.83 c2d mini refurb this morning, though! 8).

Anyone notice that the new version does not support tiger??????????

Crap ... I really do not want to upgrade to leopard....

Question for those using the new version of HB:

Are the sound-cut-out issues resolved now? Last I used it (late summer) some of the movies I ripped were losing their sound part of the way into them. This seemed to be an issue that wasn't getting addressed at the time on the HB forums. That made them worthless. So I stopped using HB and started using VisualHub.

Curious as I'd like to use HB again.

Thanks!

How well does Handbrake take care of the latest copy protection? Does it really work with all DVDs?

I could be wrong, but I think HB is focusing on what it does best and that is encode. I think the copy protection is secondary and I thought I read that they will not be focusing as much on this. I use AnyDVD via bootcamp and then use HB in OSX. Works perfect everytime.

Well, you are correct. However at the same time, van (the one who really revamped the .eyetv and TS/PS stream reading code) made some huge improvements to the dvd reading code as well. So for instance 0.9.2 will encode Ratatouille perfectly right off the disk. No problem. It *pretty much* works with dreaded 0 size/duration cell dvd's now without a hitch.

However, having said that its true that we are not focusing our efforts on keeping up with any new protection schemes that come up. If HB reads it, then fine, but we certainly do not guarantee HB will encode every dvd. If you use a ripper you like, then prerip first. If you choose to try HandBrake on the dvd as always your mileage may vary.

Great to know, thanks for the info.

Yeah, I might just do that too if I run into problems. I do have MTR too but lately it's been more of a hassle with registration, waiting, etc. while AnyDVD updates so fast. Just need to install Windows.

As far as I know, these issues have been fixed.

dynaflash, thanks to you and the rest of the team for letting us share the fruits of your labor. I was just wondering if you could address my question above regarding why I'm not getting 5.1 when using the aTV preset? I looked through the "DVD Info" output and can see that there are 6 audio tracks, the first being identified as "Dolby Surround" and the 2nd is the 5.1 mix. I even tried changing the audio to "AAC" (rather than AAC + AC3) which then allowed me to explicitly select "6 Channel Discrete" but I'm still getting 2 channels after encoding. The ATV is connected to a Denon 3808 via HDMI, if that matters. Again, this is using the Windows version (for the time being), unfortunately I'm at work or I'd post the DVD Info log. Thanks for any insight...

Okay, we are getting alot of this as its hard to verify for some if there setup is right.

On the ATV2 AAC six channel discrete will NOT get you the dolby 5.1 you want. The atv mixes it out to a weak dpl 3.0.

So, the assuming you have done an encode using HandBrakes AppleTV preset in 0.9.2 (after you've updated your built in presets, mind you). If you are still not getting DD 5.1 from your receiver, A simple way to see if its the HandBrake output or your setup, simply reboot the atv and watch if the DD 5.1 indicator lights up on your reciever when that intro movie plays. that movie is exactly the same setup as the HB AppleTV preset uses.

If it doesnt light up when that startup movie plays, you have a issue with your setup.

Excellent test, I'll do that when I get home; on my first attempt at encoding (ever, I've never used HB before) I didn't change anything from the ATV preset, but I did know from reading here about updating the presets, which I did. Anyway, thanks for the test tip, I'll post results tonight; much appreciated!

Rebooted the ATV & got 5.1 during the opening sequence, so everything's good with the setup. I'm going to try a different DVD and see if that makes a difference; just to confirm, I should only have to use the AppleTV preset and the 5.1 track should be included automatically, correct?

That should do it, but check under the Audio and Subtitles tab to make sure it's using the 5.1 audio.

Under Audio & Subtitles it says "Automatic" for Track 1 when I use the ATV preset and "None" for Track 2. "Track 1 Mix" is greyed out but also says "Automatic." Here's the DVD Info, as I mentioned before the 5.1 is track 2:

Under Audio & Subtitles it says "Automatic" for Track 1 when I use the ATV preset and "None" for Track 2. "Track 1 Mix" is greyed out but also says "Automatic." Here's the DVD Info, as I mentioned before the 5.1 is track 2:

Success!! Just had to manually change Track 1 from "Automatic" and just inserted a "2" and that did the trick... I guess it doesn't "Automatic"ally detect the 5.1, seems to just default to whatever is the first audio track. Thanks for the help, hopefully this may help another newbie like myself...

I always suggest manually selecting the audio track. Nothing like spending an hour or two encoding a movie and then pulling it up to hear french, or spanish when you were expecting english (Monsters, Inc is a good example of that).

Dyna - great job - pass on the thanks to the whole crew. A few minor bugs, but it does an excellent job of providing great quality encodes with fantastic sound. :)

Yep, total newbie so I had no idea; I wonder how difficult it would be for them to list the available tracks in a drop-down box under the "Automatic" default for Track 1? i.e. put the same info that appears in the "DVD Info" output in the drop-down box so you could select it... would be a lot more intuitive then figuring out to type a "2" in place of the "Automatic" IMO. Regardless, it's working for me now so I'm just thankful for all their hard work and that they allow us to share in it...
