Originally voted XR because I am sick of the X size, and didn't want to pay for the max this year with what its current offering is. However, after Verizon came out of nowhere with an unexpected, buy 1 get 1 for $700 off, I had to get my wife and I XS Max's. Our bill is going to be cheaper with the Maxes then it was with the X's. Makes no sense, I will take it! lol

The X will last me another year or two, if developments aren't enticing enough.

X to XS makes zero sense....just unnecessary stuffing of Tim Cooks pockets.

I don't know where you got $300 from.. I only owed 1 payment some type of way. I'll be upgrading for less than 200 with taxes.

Upgrading will cost you more than one month of extra payments. There is 1 month extra to upgrade early and three monthly payments you wouldn't have to make if you don't upgrade as the payments are for 20 months not 24. So it will cost far more than you've realised if you look at total costs to upgrade versus if you didn't. Will cost more than 200.

Had the 256 X but was not a huge fan of it so I sold it a month ago and payed off its device payments and ordered a 512gb Xs Max instead. Also took advantage of the bogo deal and upgraded my other 2 lines to a Xs max and Xs.

I'm not upgrading, zero desire whatsoever, but I understand X -> Max if you want a bigger screen.

X -> Xr? I don't even see that as an upgrade. It's a decent phone (but overpriced imo, even in the context of high Apple prices), it'll sell by the bucketload, but going from X -> Xr would be a baffling, inexplicable move imo. Nevermind the LCD, the PPI is 6,7&8 level, only more of it. Fine for most people, but it was showing its age 2 years ago, and a huge step-down from an X, at least for my eyes.

SS S4 Watch and new iPad Pro for me this year.

Disagree. Just because something is cheaper than what you had didn't mean a downgrade.

The Xr is bigger screen than X
Xr had better processor/internals than X.

I agree the screen could be a downgrade but I'll have to see it to check. As you say I'll not be going to a Xs, and the Xs Max bigger screen would be nice, but the cost is getting crazy. I took it last year for the X to try, but want a bigger screen, but starting at £1099 now is ridiculous.

I see your point, but not I'm basing it on price.

I'd argue the benefit from the better internals will make a negligible difference to the experience of using it. I'm thinking low, single digit % performance differences 99% of the time. Whereas the screen, which you see and interface with constantly, has an enormous impact on your experience doing everything with the phone. Again, the screen is fine, but a significant downgrade from an X.

The real benefit would be better battery life, if you need it, and the bigger screen. If money was the issue, I'd personally keep on saving the extra for a Max if I had to go bigger from an X.

I added this prior to your reply, my beef is this - Nevermind the LCD, the PPI is 6,7&8 level, only more of it. Fine for most people, but it was showing its age 2 years ago, and a huge step-down from an X, at least for my eyes.

Conversely, if someone was coming from nowhere buying a new phone, funnily enough I think the Xs is the least attractive phone in the line up. Xr or Xs Max are better propositions imo for most people. But that's not what we're talking about in this topic.

No. Not upgrading for at least 3 years. Nowadays there is not much point to upgrade, phones don’t change much if at all year after year.

I've upgraded my iPhone every year since I first bought an Iphone (2009; 3GS). I've always sold my phone, normally on eBay and plumped for an upgrade, even minor S bumps, due to improvements in Siri, Camera, screen etc.

This year I'm tapping out. I'm more financially secure than I've been in the past 10 years, so it's certainly not a budget thing. It's simply because I'm looking at the XS and not seeing a single thing that justifies upgrading. The Xr would not constitute an upgrade at all. And the Max is too large for me (the only large phone I've ever had was a 6 plus, and I was desperate to get rid of that after a year as I found it cumbersome).

The X came out less than a year ago. It's pretty great. I'm happy to switch to a much more restrained cycle of upgrading every 2 years now, and skipping the S each time. Maybe I've matured?

Um, i just bought a Series 4 Stainless Steel Watch, though...so Apple still has me.

I think a lot are like you, me to, whereby it's not necessarily about the cost, although it is getting ridiculous, is just not much to upgrade to.

Disagree that the Xr isn't an upgrade though. To me I like the different colours, bigger screen, don't know for sure how big a difference on the LCD to OLED and ppi will make without first trying. Does it matter that much at these screen sizes? The x2 zoom is nice but not a massive difference for iPhone photography.

Agree on the watch 4 as well though! I have series 1 and like the look on paper at it....

Max upgrade for me.

Camera
That gold
Faster Face ID
Better battery
Faster LTE
Sold

In respect to camera what's the upgrade from the X to the Xs though? The Xr doesn't have the dual camera for zoom, but does have the portrait mode (which I like on the X), and the after effect of the deity of field adhering as well.

Looking at poll so far I'm surprised how few are going from an X to an Xr though, maybe the low ppi, resolution and no OLED is too much a downgrade?

Couldn't justify the upgrade as I don't want to go back to the larger footprint. That said, I can't wait till Friday for the S4 and October can't come soon enough as I am stoked to get my first iPad Pro!

Gonna have to go with a hard disagree on that one.

30% larger camera sensor and 2x LTE speeds is enough for me with those two features alone. Everything else including the A12 is just icing. I use my phone as my primary camera so its a big upgrade even from the X. Excited for a lot of the small stuff like faster wireless charging, faster faceID, higher dynamic range on the screen, and even the tiny bump in battery life.

X to Xs Max over here.

I hated having to give up my 6 Plus just to get the first iPhone that was all screen. The Max is what I wanted last year and now I won't have to upgrade again for a very long time.

The one and only reason I want to upgrade is for band 71. I get amazing coverage/speed at work though so I think I am gonna hold off.

How are the LTE speeds currently on your X? & are you guaranteed twice the speed on most days?

Looking at my fastest speed tests: 254 down / 123 up. Although, the network here may be in better shape than over there (apparently, it's one of the best...).

With the camera boost, I can only really see a benefit if you plan of blowing up photos to wall mount. I mean it's not like the X camera's poor by any stretch, so what will the new camera of the XS allow you to do? I'm wondering if the 30% larger sensor will be noticeable - serious question as I'm no camera expert. Will it mean shots in all environments will turn out better, or is it mainly low light shots?

Interesting breakdown, seems if you’re a X owner the two options are hold off till next year or upgrade to Max.

Needless to say I chose to upgrade to a Max due to the yearly upgrade option. This is the first year I’m NOT excited about delivery of a new iPhone!

Unless I’m looking at this wrong, the biggest part of the cost to upgrade is the 104 USD tax (which will be $104 today and next year IF prices hold). The $56 I paid this month is for the current phone (would have paid that anyway this month), the $60 I’m paying is what I would pay anyway for the new Max, and the $30 upgrade fee is being waived. So aside from the funky pay for 2 phones in same month (which would be paid anyway) it’s not too bad.

If it weren’t for the “warped psychology” of being in the IUP, I would have no compelling reason to upgrade!! That’s master marketing right there!!

Also not sure what mr. trump intends to do with those trade tariffs. Next years phone MAY be closer to 2k!!!

I have an X and like it. Camera screen etc are great. The Xs doesn't really do much more, expectantly, than the X in my book. Same size, better camera, faster etc etc.

The Xs Max I'll have to see to see the size, I've had Plus phones before and then coming to an X the size was great. Just not sure on the size though of the Xs Max.

However the Xr, although the cheaper option, seems decent. Decent camera features still on a single lense (over my X), nice (some!) colours, bigger screen than X, not sure how big in real use terms.

Not sure on the screen, admit the X screen is really nice, but used LCDs up until this. I'd imagine it's a decent screen though in the Xr.

Disregarding price I think the Xr looks decent and I could be tempted, anyone else? I'm on iUP as well on X and don't think I'd go for Xs.

What do people think? Options from X?
Thanks
These are modest improvements but I’d imagine only the battery life will be a noticeable difference. Not worth ditching a phone less than a year old just for that. Generally when you buy these type of devices you expect to use it 2-3-4 years. And Apple knows that.

So mainly this set of releases aimed at getting you off the fence if you’re using a Series 6 or 7 phone mainly.

My 11 month old X battery now shows 90% in the battery health. Quite surprised how low is, maybe always been like this as never had this setting, but used wireless charging this year maybe a factor?

The Xr reported to have the best battery life this year as well
