No amount of cleaning (the keyboard) or hand washing is going to stop this until Apple uses a material that doesn't wear down as easily.

Those are good points. There's no such thing as a plastic that won't ever shine. They all will because all of them get worn smooth eventually by constant friction with your fingers.

But... if my experience is any indication, I do think Apple has finally started using a coating that doesn't wear away so easily. After 9 months of owning an M4 MBP, my keys still look almost new. The area where my palms rest are actually looking more worn than the keys.

That sounds promising! I hope they are using the same materials in the m4 MacBook Airs as I am due for an upgrade soon.

My wife has an M4 Air and the keys feel the same to me on those. Her Air hasn’t gotten as much use as my M4 Pro so it’s too early for me to say it’s the same, but the keys do seem to be the same to me.

The keys feel a little more slippery to me. I actually had slight difficulty typing on them initially.

There's one thing that is worse than any shining keys can ever be - it is black plastic that has matte satin "coating" on it - the one that eventually turns into sticky mess and only way to rectify the situation is scrape that junk off.

As someone who has worked in IT for decades...all keys get shiny. It all depends how often you use them and how hard you type.

Honestly, I didn't even know this was a thing, let alone a problem. I just... use mine.
It is a thing when paying premium for machines and seeing how Apple have cheapened out on plastics used, sometimes after only a few months, but it is well documented.

I still have my 2009 MBP and the KB still have a factory look after much cleaning even.

This also depends on the contents of your skin oils. With some people, keys will start getting shiny very quickly, with others much more slowly or not at all.

In my case it takes years of heavy use.
