iPhone 8 Plus and 11 are your current choices.
Not sure about the future, but the market as a whole seems to want OLEDs, hence the rumors that all iPhones will be OLED next year.

You and I have been in the same boat and posted similar comments. I too was anti 11 for similar reasons as you. Primarily the loss in width. But I’ve started to turn on my thoughts about it. I tweaked all of the settings on the store model, went to zoom display and was able to get the text in safari and other places to match up to my 8 Plus and Pro Max. When you stare at that screen day after day, without doing side by sides in stores and all that, I promise you that your eyes will adjust to the screen and it will become normal to you. The bright whites and more natural colors can be more appealing at times compared to the OLED and it’s warm colors. Just a personal opinion. I’m not saying you have to believe me, but I feel strongly the adjustment will happen. The cameras are so much better than the plus series, night mode is amazing, the U1 chip adds great functionality, 326ppi or not I find the quality of the screen much better than my 8 plus, much better battery life than the plus series, faster chip, much better speakers, etc. I know you feel it’s a consolation prize. But I wish in life my consolation prizes were as legit as the 11. Until Apple changes the way they implement pwm, our choices are limited. I think if you gave the 11 an honest chance, cleared your mind of the devices you know you cannot use regardless, you might be surprised in how good that 11 can be. Doesn’t have to be forever. Maybe in a year Apple fixes pwm or moves to micro-LED. Just my two cents. I feel ya brother. Good luck!!

I’m having to make a similar decision. I like iPhones but honestly I’m bored of the classic look and want a different phone. The 11 is too big for me but it’s a huge improvement over my iPhone 8. I don’t mind big phones if the weight isn’t too bad. The 7 Plus is a perfect example, the size of that phone and the weight is perfect. The 8 Plus feels like a brick to me and so does the 11.

This is the second year where I feel like Apple doesn’t make an iPhone that works for me. I just don’t know what Android options are available for those who are sensitive to PWM. I know OnePlus puts a DC dimming option in their settings but I haven’t tested that out.

Right now I’m back on my iPhone 8 and deciding if I want to look into Android options or if I want to keep my iPhone 8 and pick up an iPad or a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. The Android option sounds more interesting to me though because it would be different. Then I’ll try iPhones again next year.

Good luck in your decision and I’m curious what you will decide.

What’s Apple’s return policy in the UK? Honestly you should give the 11 a shot. I’ve compared the 11 and X side-by-side and even looked at webpages side by side. Honestly it’s very tough to see differences in text. The 11’s LCD is very good, don’t let the non-FullHD specs dissuade you without giving the 11 a shot first.

Non-PWM Display? Check
Large Display? Check
Great battery life? Check

True although not a big upgrade over 7+. It's crossed my mind especially as Apple are selling refurbs but it kinda feels like dead money. For my cash I'd like to feel like I getting something "new" but practicality may have to win out this one. ?‍♂️

What device are you considering? Did the series 11 iPhones not appeal?

This has me concerned and why I'm considering maybe making the jump to Android now. Grasp the nettle and give myself more options in the future.
I am waiting for the smaller phone next year. At the moment, the SE and mini 5 are working great together.

Sorry about typing option 2 earlier when I meant 3. I wondered why you asked me the question and I looked at the OP again. lol

Tried the 11 but ultimately I didn't enjoying reading text on it. It left feeling like I preferred my 7 plus so I returned. So I boxed myself into a corner.
Out of curiosity did you happen to switch it from standard mode to zoomed? I didn’t like how text was smaller in safari and apps. Once I did that, everything matched up to my 8 Plus and the Pro Max I’ve been test driving.

While you say the 8+ isn’t a big upgrade over the 7, it is an upgrade (professor, battery life, wireless charging), and the price has dropped. And it will be a good, useful phone for three or so more years at least. Plus you have the benefit of a brand new battery if you buy new. I’m a former 8+ owner and highly recommend it in general, it is the most refined and powerful version of that form factor

I'd also recommend the 8 plus in your situation, if only to buy time. I totally get where you're coming from with the screen size + resolution thing. I was the same way. It's hard to make people understand if they just don't see the difference in how text looks.

I even considered using an iPad mini for browsing etc and an iPhone SE for basic communication to get the best of both worlds. I loved the SE before switching to the 7 plus, but I can't source a brand new 128GB model in the UK anymore. There only appears to be questionable "refurbs" from third parties.

If you would just be using the SE for “basic communication” then do you even need a 128GB one?

If it's mainly Safari you want to zoom, remember that in iOS 13 you can zoom text in Safari without zooming the rest of the interface, even with different zoom levels on a site-by-site basis if you want. (settings > Safari > settings for websites).

Many people have commented that the 11 Pro iPhone's OLED screens don't bother them like the previous X & XS series did. Something got changed. So maybe the 11 pro OLED screens won't bother you. The only way to find out is to use one.

I've seen a few others with an SE/Mini combo, and they love it. I've seen nothing but positive reviews for both products. If an SE 2 were to come out, I would buy it over an 11, which is a purchase I have been tempted to make.

I was also impacted by the max screen last year, and was forced to stay with an 8+. I will say that none of the previous android phones with oled ever bugged me. The OnePlus 7 pro or note 10+ are possibly good alternatives for you. I haven’t even checked out the new phones to see if they will give me a headache, because I told myself if I upgraded it won’t be until next year or 2021. That, and you can not find an iPhone for purchase anywhere right now.
