Just noticed something today.
When starting/booting up my rMBP 2014 with the monitor plugged in, it's recognized as a 1440p display. I have to unplug and replug and it's ok, it's recognized as a retina display.

The problem does not occur when waking up form sleep.

Not annoying at all, just wondering if it's a MacOS bug.

P.S. The same in here, adapted as my main daily monitor. :)

I noticed something else today,
my screen has yellowish tint on the left side.
Here is a cap :

On the right side, the grey and white are prefect.
On the left side, the same tab looks yellowish.

Does yours look the same? Should I ask the support for a uniformity problem?

If it's going to bother you, then I would exchange it. Looking at the photo on the previous page, this one does not seem to have the same problem

Yes, Fed Ex has it in a van at the mo. Was thinking of putting an unboxing video up on Youtube when it arrives.

Thanks. I am so tempted to jump in for this monitor, but I tend to keep monitors for a while, so I want to be sure this is the one I really want.

My P2715Q arrived today and I am pretty amazed by it. Incredibly sharp, great colors and mine does not seem to have the yellowish tint someone talked about.

@yop44: Did you try the uniformity compensation in the display menu?

what date did you order it ???

Fed Ex dropped my P2715Q off about two hours ago. So I spent the intervening time producing a lovely unboxing and mini-review for everyone. Only to discover that my video camera, after many years of faithful service, decided to randomly switch itself off in the middle of recording.

Anyway, the monitor is now sat on my desk and seems lovely. I don't have a colour meter but there's a Factory Calibration Report in the box with the monitor that gives some good metrics. According to the report, Delta E is less than 3. In fact the read-out shows that the vast majority are below 1. The gamma is good and the 25-point brightness uniformity test results are all at 98% or better.

Looking at the screen, I have little doubt that the report is accurate. The report has the serial number of my monitor on it. The colours are good, uniformity is spot on and viewing angles are IPS-like.

I haven't tried any games on it as there aren't any on my Mac Pro (4,1 with a Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition) but windows move around the screen responsively. Subjectively, input lag seems low.

All in all, if you need colour accuracy or a gaming monitor wait for the big review sites to run a colour meter over it and get some genuine input lag figures. If, like me, you want it for office/video/etc. use, it's absolutely fine.

Full disclosure: I used to be a professional reviewer so I'm fairly hard to please.

Any input on scaling quality?

I'm a developer looking for a nice external monitor for my rMBP. This monitor looks like just what I've been looking for. I will mainly be using the monitor for some extra space for development (using mostly a text editor and terminals).

I'm trying to decide between the 24" and 27" and I'm wondering if anyone has some input for my situation. Unfortunately retina has spoiled me such that I can't stand to look at my 27" 1440 monitor anymore (part of that is Yosemite's fault). I'd like to run a 4k monitor in HiDPI mode, which would essentially be 1080, so it seems like the 24" would be the better choice (things might be too comically huge on the 27").

However, I have read posts in this thread about using other scaling factors than 2x. I'm curious if anyone either who has already received this monitor, or if someone who knows more about this than me can comment on the quality of scaling somewhere between 1x and 2x on a 27" 4k monitor. Are the pixels effectively used? Does text look crisp?

I should have the P2415Q later today, same perspective of where your at. Will post back here after I've have a chance to walk through a few HiDPI modes, etc. Since I've have 5k iMac, I felt pixel density on the 27" would be too big sitting next to the 5k. My perspective, anyway we'll see shortly. Will let you know.

I should mention, I always scale beyond 2x, looks nice, but waste of pixels IMHO. So if you're not trying to match pixel sizes on other devices, 27" should be great at "looks like 2560x1440" or beyond HiDPI settings. Other viewers in thread I think have commented on this.

i'm a little lost, i don't see the option for hidpi or any of the text selection thing under display, all i see is which resolution u can pick. using a gtx 660 displayport at 60hz

What version of OS X are you using?

10.10.1.

also i have a mac pro 4.1, the usb hub on the dell monitor doesn't work, like no detection at all, is it usb 2.0 backwards compatible?

FYI, just got tracking number on the 24. Dell order status still says est. delivery 12/29 via UPS ground, but the thing shipped already and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Ordered on the 8th. I either got lucky or the backlog isn't as big as they make it out to be.

One thing I've noticed through this whole order/tracking process with Dell is that their logistics leave a lot to be desired. I think most of us would agree that Apple has spoiled us when it comes to order fulfillment and tracking. :)

this box is quite confusing. it took a min to understand how to take it apart and not just rip it.

well at least it looks good, don't mind my brother's junk its his room not mine lol

unfortunately it looks like i have to get it replaced, the screen won't detect minidisplayport from time to time, and the usb hub on the monitor is dead.

but apart from that, its a very nice screen! just kinda sucks mine is a bit of a lemon. the color is very good on this, black background looks very even, no yellowish tint to the white.

Got a problem here, too. Everything was working fine up until I did a reboot. Starting up, my Mac Pro just repeated the chime. No screen, no booting, nada.

After ten minutes of checking RAM sticks and thinking how fate had dealt me a cruel blow, I tried booting without the monitor plugged in. Brrrrrring, up it came.

A few tests later and I still haven't found a way to boot the Mac Pro with the monitor switched on. It doesn't have to be unplugged, just switched off.

I'll keep testing and keep everyone posted.

P.S. I've got a USB 3 PCIe card in my 4,1 so I'll find out if that works.

There is a known issue with 4K SST displays not lighting up until the OS X login screen... but this sounds worse than that... you're unable to boot at all?!

Just tried again after reading that and left it to make sure it didn't get to the login screen. It doesn't.

With the monitor on, the problem seems to be with bringing the monitor out of sleep mode. The Mac gets to the chime, the monitor flashes up that it's coming out of sleep mode then nothing. The Mac instantly powers off when I hit the power button so it's not getting any further into the boot process.

The Mac boots fine if I switch the monitor on after the chime. Guess I'll have to wait to find out if this is a P2715Q problem or a Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition problem.

In other news, I can confirm that the USB 3 hub in the monitor only works with a USB 3 port.

yep it's the cable dell is using, i swap it for a normal usb 2.0 cable and everything worked fine. apparently dell support is too lazy to go through the options to help me sort it out, instead they already send out a replacement.

as for the mini dp, this morning it won't detect the signal at all, i'm not sure what it was but it's gone for now..

Received the P2415Q today, so here’s my initial impressions.

  • Great value for the money
  • Matches the riMac 5k very well after calibration ( x-rite i1 Display Pro )
  • AG coating is quite excellent. That being said, for me there still is somewhat of a loss in detail compared to glossy display such as riMac 5k. ( Great AG but still not a fan at these resolutions. Would have way preferred a glossy version. Of course my opinion. )
  • Minimal IPS glow
  • No noticeable back light bleed even at maximum backlight.
  • Awesome stand
  • 60Hz @ SST
Panel uniformity after calibration as attached images show:
Luminance: 1_ss_cal_lum.png
White Point: 2_ss_cal_wp.png

If you can use factory calibration, Uniformity Compensation for luminance works pretty well.

White Point: 2_ss_wp_wp.png

Apple Scaled resolutions
  • 1504x846
  • 1920x1080 Best for display
  • 2304x1296 matches riMac’s Best for display setting ( apparent size )
  • 2560x1440
  • 3008x1692
Although these settings ( 2560x1440, 3008x1692 ) are still more than useable. I personally feel this is the point that the AG coating starts to interfere/compete with smaller text. Where there still seems to be plenty of visual clarity on the glossy 5k and I don’t think it’s just the higher pixel density. Obviously this is an individual perspective.

Overall a great monitor especially at the price.

heebmax asked for an impression earlier. To answer his questions from my perspective I think the most useful Scaled resolution setting on this panel ( Have not tried all variations via resX only default apple one's ) is
2304x1296 as I think it provides the best compromise of the most resolution ( space ) for apps at the highest visual quality. From his perspective and the fact he’s coming from 27” Apple TBD, the 27” version at 2560x1440 might be a better choice. If there are any P2715Q users of there that could add to this that would be great.

If any one has any questions I’ll still be in test mode with this for next day, so please feel free to ask.
