You have the right to wipe the device and install your own OS or jailbreak it or whatever. Apple is not obligated to help you do that.

You do not own the iPhone OS, you are licensing it from Apple. Just like you don't own Mac OS X, Apple is merely letting you do whatever you want on the OS X but if they wanted to, they could have done the same thing.

Yea, I know. I don't need Apple's "help" jailbreaking. I just want them to stop preventing it. That behavior has lost them a customer as I will not be buying another iPhone or iPad. Had they let jailbreaking continue unopposed I would buy buying the new iPhone whenever that comes out and I probably would have already ordered an iPad.

You guys really really have issues when it comes to understanding product development.

The iPad is not a Mac. It is a completely different device. It has different hardware. Different ergonomics. You interact with it differently. It responds differently to user interaction. The definition of "multitasking" on such a device is different.

People insisting that desktop snow leopard should have been put on the iPad need some serious help.

You really have issues if you think that the iPad would be incapable of running a full featured OS. The iPad is ONLY a completely different device BECAUSE it runs iPhone OS. That's fine and all. It's just that the device is EXTREMELY overpowered and could be capable of much more. It's a shame.

Oh yes it does. Where's the media buzz for the Dell whatsit tablet? Who the hell is waiting for that launch?

And no phone is kicking the iPhone's butt. Take a look at the numbers.

That doesn't mean the iPad or iPhone are better... That just means there are enough fools like you to buy them. Spec by spec many devices are far better than the iDevices. Apple is a brilliant company though and they can sell expensive toys like hotcakes.

There is plenty of buzz about all those products in technology media. Just take a look at Engadget, Gizmodo, BGR, etc. Plenty of people are talking about SuperSonic being announced tomorrow, which absolutely puts iPhone to shame technologically.

Just because you choose to live in Apple bubble and are ignorant about those things doesn't make them any less relevant.

Sometimes it's the quality over quantity. Apple can sell expensive "toys" like hotcakes because they provide an amazing user experience and damn good software/hardware. Yeah the iPhone doesn't have Flash, a 5MP Camera, the ability to download Apps from a place other than the App Store, but it's still an amazing device.

I rather have a piece of nicely put together hardware with a great user interface without Flash, than have a clunky, slow device with a "high res" camera that also has a flash and Adobe Flash etc etc.

That just isn't a reasonable explanation. Clearly, Apple is practicing subversive kinds of mind control.

Seriously, it amazes me that people have the gaul to make this argument when the iPhone has hundreds of thousands of apps of every kind, and the last thing you'll ever hear an iPhone user complain about is a lack of choice. How could anyone imagine it would be a better idea to have several stores, thereby making it much easier for a user to never see an app they might enjoy, and limiting a developers potential audience?

The fact that Apple has chosen to develop a 'closed' system on these portable devices is exactly why we are able to download music, movies, and games directly to our devices with the touch of a button.

Years ago everyone (myself included) was bitching about DRM, a much more onerous restriction than anything mentioned in this thread. But without DRM, it is likely that legal digital distribution of music would never have taken off the way it did.

@Nausicaa... I know man! That's what I was just saying! :D

It's pretty simple. Yes, Apple is coddling their customers by controlling the Apps they can download and install on there phone. It's their right too. Why should they pander to people who want it to be open?

Let's say they do make it open... Sure, some people can be responsible... but when the IT guy at Joe SixPack's job shows him how he can also d/l apps off the web and two weeks later he bricks his phone or some malware accesses his personal information, he will show up at the Apple Store pissed as all hell. Now it's Apple's problem, because he's come to expect that the iPhone is a safe playground.

If I would have told anyone less than 3 years ago that you could go on your iPhone and browse a catalog of over 150,000 apps, would anyone have questioned it's "openess"?

By the way we all fell in the Hot Tub Time Machine.

The iPad is not a giant iPod Touch. the iPod Touch is a tiny iPad.

Think of how much more a netbook sucks compared to a laptop. Say its sucks 100x more.

That is how much better the iPad will be than an iPod Touch.

So we can expect an iPad to be at least 100 times better than an iPod touch.

For $499 seems like quite a bargain.

Universally acclaimed for a "phone". I think for a phone, the iPhone OSX is fantastic. For a tablet not so much. Why would anyone want a tablet, if they got an iPhone or an iTouch?
HP was able to implement a webcam, multitasking with their HP Slate. I think Apple could have done a much better job, or at least include an isight, at this day in age, a webcam is standard.
I would get an HP Slate if it wasn't for the Windows OS.

Buy a slate then. The only one who loses will be you.

I am not sure why people have such a problem understanding why having a much bigger iPod touch makes it much better.

As I noted above, one of the reasons netbooks SUCK is because all they are, are small notebooks. So you take everything about a notebook and make it smaller and worse.

The iPad is doing the opposite, and taking everything about the iPod Touch and making it bigger and better. It is pretty fundamental.

That's it, you're brilliant and the rest of the world is stupid. You keep focusing on specs and the rest of us will focus on the overall experience of a complete system that actually works.

You would have thought after the whole iPad thing where the haters kept posting spec sheets of phones that kill the iPhone they would have stopped.

A spec sheet is a piece of paper with words on it. Nothing more nothing less. Certainly doesn't convey the usability or functionality of a complex device like an iPhone or iPad.

We will devices in the future with 50 gigapixel cameras, and an emergency oxygen kit, and 52 usb slots on it. And most of those will still be inferior to the iPad. Maybe one or two will be actual competition, but it won't be because of the spec sheet.

Spec Sheet is when you want to compare a generic HP computer versus a generic dell computer. It is for commodity items.

People buy Apple products for the brand, just like people buy BMW cars even tho they never use all the power of those cars. It's all about experience and quality. There are many devices which you can compare that has same price point and while one of them has higher hardware spec, there's always trade offs for those hardware spec. Software beats the hardware if it's optimized to the best of the hardware.

The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter if there's a hundred devices that is so much more powerful and prettier than iPad, the fact is, iPad has the best OS platform with the best application library for its platform on the market and its matched perfectly to the hardware it runs on. You can't say the same thing about several android devices as all of them have different experiences, with several devices not having the app market built in as the device manufacturer wants to include their own store.

There's no reason to call people fools for wanting to get the best experience instead of best devices.

Are you seriously suggesting the media buzz for Dell's whatsit tablet is even 1% of the iPad buzz. Large fail!

No.
But seriously, I would buy an iPad JUST for a book on work by this type of literary genius. Now THAT would be a bargain!
No offense, but that was so stupid... it's hilarious!

What you just described was that Apple goes for quantity of sales while the others go for quality of products... So.......

Have you ever used any of the new slates coming out on other brands?

That's it, you're brilliant and the rest of the world is stupid. You keep focusing on specs and the rest of us will focus on the overall experience of a complete system that actually works.

How much time have you spent with other products? Heck, you haven't even touched an iPad!

Again, you have no experience to compare saying it's the "Best".

It could be. I'm not going to say that until I have compared. If that's the case I have no problem with it, it's just far too soon to make any kind of declaration about multiple OSs that have not even been released...

And to anyone wondering what I'm talking about as an alternative... http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-hands-on-and-impressions/

Announced before the iPad. Multiple processors (mobile and laptop), multitouch screen, custom slate OS and desktop OS. It auto switches OS and processors when the keyboard is detached. If this OS runs smoothly when released then I don't see how it'd be any comparison with the iPad. Component wise, it's better. We all have to wait and see on software because all we KNOW right now about anything is the hardware.

EDIT: Woops! Didn't read all posts in that convo. My B.

HAHAHAHA WOW!!! FAIL! Before you try to bash someone try clicking the gd link. That's a 4G phone by HTC.

Hey chief, the doctors prescribed those meds for a reason. Stay on the therapy and don't give the orderlies a hard time. How the hell did you manage to connect a comment questioning the media buzz associated a Dell tablet vs the iPad to a phone made by HTC? And are you contending that the HTC phone is a competitor for the iPad? Ya lost me McMurphy.

Umm... Did you read the post you quoted? He made no mention of Dell at all.

I see that reading 2 posts up that line the Dell was mentioned, but that has nothing to do with the SuperSonic which was addressed in the post.

You still conveniently left that part out.

I wouldn't say that the SuperSonic is an iPad competitor, it's a phone. It'd compete with the iPhone.

The point is, you can't measure products by Buzz alone. If that was the case we'd be surrounded by Vista computers...

I wouldn't say that the SuperSonic is an iPad competitor, it's a phone. It'd compete with the iPhone.

And it kicks the pants off iPhone 3GS, based on what Sprint announced today. Anyone still wants to say there is no innovative competitive products coming out from other vendors??

HTC EVO 4G

Apple better steps up the game with iPhone 4, or they will be left in the dust.

Looks like a nice phone. Too bad Sprint has about 10 or 12 cities in the entire US covered by Wimax. Pretty useless if you don't have widespread coverage, think AT&T is bad? ya good luck with finding Wimax coverage.

Aside from that, this HTC phone is set to launch this summer, by which time it is very possible Apple has released it's 4th gen phone. I would hope a smartphone in 2010, would be at least as good hardware wise as a phone released in June of 2009. :) Then again if all they have to sell on is a hardware checklist, it's got it's work cut out against the N1 and all the other HTC clones with the exact same Android UI.

As for the "innovation" what part of this HTC phone is so innovative? This looks like every other HTC Android based phone out there. They toss in a Wimax chip that will work in less than 5% of the US... that's innovation?

If this is all the competition the iPhone ever gets, Apple has zero to worry about.

Apple has been working on the iPad for 9 years or more. Every time they updated their mac-book OS they tried it on a tablet, and the required stylus drove Steve Jobs nuts, leading to that version of the iPad never making it to market.

Steve browses these forums, and he came across my post in March 2009. It was an AHA moment for him, and he quickly had his researchers put together the device I'd described. It took some optimizing. They couldn't make it as thin as a Kindle. They thought web pages looked better at 1024x768. My price was their target, but components aren't cheap enough to get there yet. It was the iPhone apps and scalability of them that made it all make sense. With every app designed for a touchscreen there was no need for that pesky stylus.

So while we might think a full-blown OS-X would be better on the iPad, Apple has been there, done that. TRUST your Apple leader that the iPad in it's current form is the best iPad it can be.

You do realize that it also supports EVDO/3G, don't you? It's not WiMax only, so if your city isn't covered by Clear/WiMax - it just falls back to 3G. Hardly "useless".

As for the "innovation" what part of this HTC phone is so innovative? This looks like every other HTC Android based phone out there.

480x800 resolution on a huge 4.3 screen.. 8MP camera with flash.. Front-facing camera.. HDMI out.. WiMax 4G.. Thin and slick case with almost zero bezel.. You don't see any of these as innovative?

But forgive me, I forgot - it's only innovative when Steve Jobs says so. I am sure when iPhone finally supports front camera and the rest of these features in a few years - they will all of a sudden become "magical" and "revolutionary". And it will be HTC's fault for "stealing" them from iPhone.

I would argue not understanding it is stupid. It is a pretty simple and understandable concept.

Unless you are somehow claiming a netbook is not just a smaller and less useful notebook.

If it was not for apple we would still be on phones that have physical keyboards. the thing is apple makes sure you enjoy what you have. they just don't put in stuff that does not make sense.

Umm... Did you read the post you quoted? He made no mention of Dell at all.

Well yes I did McMurphy, but apparently you've been stealing other patient's meds again because you appear to be blacking out mid-paragraph or the word Dell is obscured by the purple haze of thorazine. To make it easier for you I've pasted in the entire original post that started the conversation and highlighted the part you're having trouble seeing.

Please set aside the kool-aid for a second. Android has over 30,000 apps in the Market today. HTC already shipping several phones that kick the pants off iPhone, and 4G SuperSonic phone being announced tomorrow. Dell Streak mini-tablet looks incredible and will integrate with Amazon music/video/e-book stores. Microsoft Courier and WP7S OS push the envelop of innovation further.

The world doesn't revolve around Apple and its wall gardened and locked down iPhoneOS ecosystem.

And then my response.....

Oh yes it does. Where's the media buzz for the Dell whatsit tablet? Who the hell is waiting for that launch?

And no phone is kicking the iPhone's butt. Take a look at the numbers.

And then more confusion on your part.....

Look again o'resident of the land of confusion. I just hit the quote button without editing since hitekalex posted a short four liner. May I suggest that you have the nurses help you reread post #74 and #75.
