I just ordered the 8/512 from Costco. should be showing up early December.
A couple of reasons why i selected it.
1) I am fine with the lower end and get more battery life. I honestly think that Apple will try to make next generation thinner and aim for maybe slightly more than 10 hours. I definitely don't want another laptop with short battery life.
2) This would replace my 2017 1.1Ghz m3 Macbook if it works really well.
3) I actually like the touch bar so combined with a fan to secure performance and the extra battery life makes it a no brainer.
4) Was considering ordering from Apple but noticed Costco have this model shipping Nov 30 and then have 90 days return policy so if it has a lot first gen issues I can return it, so i ordered it from Costco.
5) Size wise it is optimal.
6) only concern is if 8Gig will be enough. I have it today and it is slow to wake up and I can quite easily use up most memory. But on the other hand this new processor might be faster and remove the delays so maybe I won't notice it.
7) Figured it would be sufficient for my use, Office, Safary, email, Whatsapp etc. I do some photo work and the occasional video but not too much and for heavy work I have an iMac.
8) Getting 2-3x the performance and on top of that almost doubling battery life makes me jump on this new machine. Hopefully version 1 will be good. I did buy the initial MBA 1 and that was a mistake it overheated like crazy.

Question is will Baldurs Gate 3 run with only 8Gig? I am betting it will but also taking the Pro to enable gaming. This is one of the few games I find interesting.

Would I like a redesign? Sure but who knows when that will come and if they try to put the MBP on a diet we might end up with less battery life. Funny enough I read the interview with Apple execs who admitted they didn't realize it would have this great battery life. My concern is they will try to increase performance at the expense of battery life since they have more than they expected.
Look at iPhone 12 vs 11 with smaller batteries.

Am I off?

This... doesn't seem like Apple at all. I'm guessing you're talking about the Independent interview? Because I didn't read that as them just referring to having more than enough battery life, but also performance.

One thing about Apple's chips that generally goes uncommented on (because their performance steals the show) is that they are pretty efficient (and they keep working on that). We could definitely get smaller batteries (always a concern with Apple lol), but it doesn't necessarily translate to worse battery life (but it can still so your concern there is valid).

It's unlikely that anyone here will know for certain whether you are on or off since some of these are purely speculative assumptions on how third parties will or will not execute.

For sure, you will likely have some of these questions more authoritatively answered after a few weeks/months (like the Baldur's Gate scenario) of patiently sitting on the sidelines and observing how others are using their ASi Macs in real world situations.

That said you have been gifted a generous return window by your merchant. I suggest you put it through its paces immediately and consider the worthiness of your purchase without assuming that things will vastly improve in a month.

In my case, I have elected to stick with my Mac mini 2018 and continue reading how M1 Mac mini owners react to ownership after a few months.

At this point, my biggest hesitation in jumping into Apple Silicon right now is the maturity of the applications, both the operating system and the library of user applications (whether they are first-party or third-party). That same uncertainty has given me pause in updating my Mac mini 2018 to Big Sur.

My guess is that I will update my Mac mini to Big Sur sometime in Q2 2021 and then review whether or not acquisition of an M1 Mac mini will give me sustantial return versus what my current system offers.

I already have enough computers and devices at home so I have little interest in adding to my system administration load without significant upside.

Been itching for a desktop setup again, was going to get a 2020 iMac but held off. Thinking of pulling the trigger on a M1 mini with 16GB/512 or 1TB pending real world usage tests. Then when a beefier Mini with more ports comes, I’ll just trade up for it.

I would like to get back into Autodesk Maya, as long as viewport performance is good I don’t really mind how long renders will take, after all these are entry level ARM Macs.

Any place but here or there....
Needed a laptop, so I ordered an MBA which is due btw tomorrow - Wednesday. Will eventually replace my 2013 27” iMac with an M chip Mac too.

I am curious about the Mac Mini performs and look forward to reading about folks’ experiences with it.

I ordered MacPro with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I still have a week to cancel the order if I change my mind.

What I was really hoping for (but not expecting) was an iMac with touchscreen and Apple Pencil support. I haven’t used a laptop in about 10 years. The iPhone replaced 80% of what I used to us a laptop for, and the iPad replaced the rest. But the new MacBooks looked so nice. Then I realized that I can connect it to my 4K external monitor when I’m at my desk and get the best of both worlds.

I have a couple scientific programs that run only on Windows, but that’s okay. I will keep my 5K iMac, so I can continue to run Parallels there. I spent more than a decade at Microsoft, where everyone had at least two machines on their desk, so that doesn’t bother me a bit.

A lot of people are waiting for a 16-inch MacBook, but I think that might be too big. I had a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, until it suffered a fatal fall, and even that felt uncomfortably large at times.

I’m not worried about the number of ports. I’ve got a wireless network. If I had to plugin / unplug four devices from my laptop every time I moved it, I would probably regret getting a laptop.

I did spend quite a bit of time thinking about the SSD and whether 512GB would be enough. Although, honestly, that’s larger than any laptop I’ve ever had. My iMac has a 1TB fusion drive and a couple of external drives, though, so 512GB seems a bit small. But I have a personal cloud that I can use to share data between my machines at home (or even on the road, if I have WiFI access, assuming I ever go on the road again). So, local storage becomes less important.

I have a 2017 MBP 15 nicely spec'd. However seeing the Geekbench #'s I'm wondering if I should upgrade. I love my MBP screen size so jumping down to a 13 might not be what I want at the moment. I'm torn as I do have a Ultrafine external display. Even the MBA is enticing. I have a separate work laptop for PC and no longer run windows on my MBP. I think the resell market for MBP is going to have a lot of deals.

Will see the reviews and see but the MBA just brings so much value.

I am dying for the M1 Mini since mine is a 2012 i7.

Normally I run all my desktop devices on wired gigabit ethernet, but this time I am itching to try out the WiFi 6 (802.11 ax) on my home's 1GB connection and my work place's 10GB network using WiFi6.

I would expect the M1 should smoke the 2012 even with twice the RAM....

Will leave feedback on this Mini for sure!

My Sony integrated Win 10 goes to my young nieces, to be replaced by the re-designed 27” or 30” inch AS iMac; when ?‍♀️!

In the interim ‘am leaning towards the M1 MBA as my first Mac.

You’ll likely miss the 15” monitor. If you can wait, you’d think the MBP 16”s are only a few months away.

I'm holding off AT LEAST until the Gen3 models. Partly because Gen1 products give me the heebie jeebies, and partly (mostly) because I bought a 2020 MBA.

My Late 2014 Mac Mini is running headless, idling in the corner and running Folding@home.

My iMac is a 2010 and Apple didn't release an M1 iMac (yet). That's the one I'm waiting for.

I have a M1 MBP on order and will get the 14" MBP next year.

This was part of my agreed strategy with my dad. He's using a nearly 8 year old late 2012 13" rMBP which struggles with video conferencing so he wants to upgrade, while I have a 2017 12" retina MacBook which unfortunately is a dog at video conferencing.

We had three upgrade options (bear in mind he's happy to pay a small amount for the laptops; he doesn't want me to gift my old one):
1. I buy this year's MBP, depreciate it heavily for tax and sell it to him after I buy a 14" MBP next year. I sell my rMB.
2. I sell on my old rMB to him and buy the new MBP.
3. We both buy new computers now. I sell my rMB.

As dad tends to use his rMBP at the dining table, giving him the 12" wasn't the best, while option 3 meant that he would not benefit from depreciation. So this way, I get the best of both worlds: the new M1 this year and next year's 14", while dad gets a near new computer much cheaper than buying new.

Sounds like Dad is screwed in regards to video conferencing until the 14" MacBook Pro comes out...

How's he gonna bring in that OnlyFans moola in the interim...?!?

I'm gonna wait till next week to see reviews and testing, but i'll probably get one. Sick of my 2016 15 inch MBP and worried the keyboard will break now that the extended warranty is over lol. If what seems to be true is tho this should be able to slap the hell out of my old 2016 with some added benefits as well. If next years releases are stellar and worth upgrading to a bigger system again (or perhaps even an iMac) then i'll just trade this in and get a new one. I just upgrade when it looks worth, with trade ins it's not too bad imo, specially if it's a work computer it's worth it anyways imo.

Ordered the 16/256 Mini as a secondary mac to my main MBP 16 (although, if it performs as good or better, it might take over as an office machine with the laptop to go on the road). I chose the 256 one since I have a Sabrent XTRM-Q TB3 2TB portable drive to switch from one mac to the next. 256 is enough for everything but my Documents folder. Monitor will be the 5K Ultrafine Display (that I've had for several years as a second monitor to MBPs). Pretty stoked.

I might do the same and get a Mini 16/256GB or 16/512GB for the home office to allow me to allow keep my MBP16 in the office (if I ever go back to office work!). It would also allow me to check out the software compatibility of the M1 before spending more on a 13/14" MBP to have as a travel computer. The MBP is nice, but a bit large to carry around every day - I got it for the RAM capacity and GPU performance (video editing), so if a future MBP13/14 is launched on or before WWDC 21 that supports 32GB RAM and has a GPU at least as good as the AMD 5500M, I would be very tempted by this.

I got myself a 13” Pro mainly for software dev but am planning on selling it once the 4 port 13” Pro gets updated. I was going to hold off until the M10/M1X/whatever Macbooks got released but since Macbooks hold their value pretty well I figured I’d only be out a couple hundred €.

I want a higher end desktop, either the larger sized iMac or Mac Pro, but those are likely the last products to get Apple Silicon. I mostly do 4K video editing in Final Cut & music production in Logic, hopefully it is powerful enough!

I ordered a MBA 8-Core GPU /16GB/512GB.
I use my Lenovo L390 i5.8265u/16GB/512GB for University right now and i really dont like its touchpad.
In addition i really hate fan noise. I already changed the thermal paste on it and optimised the fan curve but the fan kicks up way to often.

I take notes with my iPad Pro(2018) and i hope the MBA will be the perfect partner for my use case.

Buying the 13” M1 Pro, but I’ll sell it when the 16” gets Apple Silicon and ProMotion.
I ordered a 500 gb, 16 gb DDR Macbook Pro 13"... but I hate buying that 4 year old desifn, we might be waiting for 2 years lol, I want to get a macbook pro 14" with miniled and promotion. I think next year we migth be getting miniled for I'm really not holding my breath for promotion :(

?

The old rMBP struggles with a bit with video conferencing, but it still works. In stark contrast to my rMB where the processor gets hot, and eventually overwhelmed. My wariness about heat and the proven longevity of the rMBP are why I've gone for the MBP this time round...

But back on topic: my guess is that the new MBP models will be announced at WWDC (or not long afterwards) as part of a suite of announcements of the extra functionality in Apple Silicon that the next macOS will take advantage of. That's about 8 months or so away. The usual advice of Mac buying is even more sound than usual: buy now only if you need it!

I ordered a 13” Pro and I plan to sell it in spring. I will use it for software development and testing stuff and then move to the new 16” when it’s released.
I did the exact same thing. I bought the first retina MBP in 2012 and maxed the specs. It has lasted 8.5 years now and the only reason I need to move on is because I'm having monitor issues.

My goal was to hold out until the 16" MBP and max it out, similar to what I did in 2012, but I bought a 13" as a temporary machine, then will trade it back in for the 16" when it's out this summer. Will probably lose a few hundred bucks "renting" the new M1 machine until then, but I'm OK with that.
