I’ll wait and see what their iMacs are like, and if the rumours of an Mini Pro have any substance.
But unfortunately it seems as if Apple is pricing itself out of my reach. While I could survive with a 16GB RAM/1TB SSD configuration, I would really prefer a 32GB/2TB(+) config. And there is just no way I can justify paying Apples prices. I’ve used Macs for personal computing needs since the Mac Plus, and I have no issue with the ARM transition, quite the opposite! But Apple is targeting a demographic I don’t belong to.
you and me both. learnt coding on an Apple ][ at school computer club!

I'm planning to wait until next year, to see 1) any potential Gen 1 issues, and 2) more importantly, to see what the higher-end 13" (maybe 14") and 16" MBP ASi models look like.

I'm fine with my late 2016 13" MBP (1st year with new design, 4TB ports) right now so not in a hurry to upgrade. This laptop (in closed-clamshell mode into a 27" 4K monitor has become my primary work computer over the last 8 months of Covid-work-from-home, and I'm fortunate that my work doesn't really require power that would make my 2016 13" MBP feel sluggish.

I'm more worried/interested to see what hiccups crop on capabilities due to not being on Intel anymore.

Rosetta looks promising, but I sort of want to see what edge cases and issues crop up once these are out in the wild and getting rampantly tested and pushed by real world users and their different situations.

I am also very close to taking the plunge. I have a 2017 MBA that works without any issue, but I buy my devices on a schedule so I replace the older ones when I can, in order not to put too much cost on my credit card at once. So I try to rotate the devices to avoid buying the iPhone, iPad and Mac at the same time. I've just paid off my XR and my sister's Galaxy S10 so the funds I allocated on my credit card are now freed up for the new Macbook and I think Apple Silicon comes at just the right time. I plan on replacing my iPad Pro 10,5 in two years so now is the time to buy the laptop. In addition to this, I use Apple stock apps a lot so Apple Silicon will fit me like a glove as I would very much like to have a laptop that can run iOS / iPadOS apps that I use all the time. All in all it seems like it came at just the right time, and I don't have to worry too much about initial software compatibility as it will be solved eventually, and I'll still have my MBA on Catalina to fall back on.

Now I wait for the reviews, just to see if there are any major let-downs or design flaws that would stop me from buying, though I don't anticipate anything like that because Apple has kept the form-factor so that should go a long way to preventing possible issues. Also, as others have already noted, we can hardly expect any significant improvements to this in the next couple of years, and by "this" I mean the MBP 13 and MBA. Now come the 16-inch, iMacs and the like, with more advanced M-family chips and 32GB and upwards of RAM, which is not what I need and I wouldn't buy it even if it were available now. Aside from the extra RAM and the extra cost that I don't need, all of that will not fit me because for my use case and lifestyle, I have to go portable so only the MBA and the smaller MBP fit These particular entry-level laptops will not be updated in the near future because Apple will now have to take care of the pro-tier of machines and transfer its efforts over to the desktops as the M chip matures. I can only see them coming back to the MBA/MBP13 once they've gone full circle and that will take longer than I can wait. So I don't really see any particular reason not to make the purchase now, everything seems to have come together provided that the laptops don't disappoint in some important way that ends up being a deal-breaker. We should know soon enough and I imagine I'll be buying a MBA or a MBP in a couple of weeks.

You’ll likely miss the 15” monitor. If you can wait, you’d think the MBP 16”s are only a few months away.
I think you are right. Will wait for the new 16 or even 14 and see. Do you believe it will only be a few months away on the announcement of the 16?

I just ordered 13: MBP / 512/16. Says 12/9-12/16 arrival. Threading the needle. If impression over the next 2 weeks suck, I will cancel. If not, I will keep and get a slightly longer than 2 week return window depending on when it arrives , most likely 3-4 weeks. I am hoping it works out.

I own a mid 2015 MBP 15. It’s the base model with integrated graphics only. I want to wait until the higher-end 13 inch and the 16 inch come out. I hope the rumors about a 14 inch MBP come true. That would be a nice size.

If my current MBP needs to be replaced before that, I might consider the M1 MBP. It mostly depends on what the reviewers and real world users have to say.

I have a PC right now:

AMD 3900X CPU (12c/24t)
ASUS Crosshair VIII Impact mDTX mobo
G.Skill TridentZ Neo RAM (2@16GB DIMMs, 3600/16.16.16.36, Samsung B-die)
Sabrent Rocket 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSDs (2@1TB, PCIe Gen4 x4)

and I am expecting to place an AMD 6800 XT GPU (72CU, 16GB GDDR6, PCIe Gen4 x16) in said system...

But I will be watching to see what Apple brings to the table with their (smaller) Mac Pro in a few years, and I would assume it will put my above rig to shame...?!?

Spur of the moment bought an Air with 16GB and 1TB this morning. Watched some early reviews during my lunch break and made me even happier with my purchase!

Was going to get a Mini originally, but ultimately wanting the larger iMac when released. So using this till then and saved me getting a monitor and peripherals. Early review performance looks solid for this and I don't plan on doing lots of long sustained work.

This is sort of an irrational reason to be less interested...but....

I truly would be more interested if there was an Apple designed 5k external monitor/dock one could purchase to use along with a new M1 MacBook.
