i have a question: If we take off the screen protector how it affect oilphobic layer? Is it destroyed?

I doubt it harms it at all. Similar to paint-protection film on cars - leave it on for years and after removal the paint is fine.

iPad 3, naked for 9 years: no micro scratches.
Two weeks later using iPP 21 naked with Apple Pencil: no micro scratches.
iPhone 8, naked for 4 years, some micro scratches (countable).

When I first looked at my Alu Apple Watch 6: one billion micro scratches ? (kinda blends together).

TBH micro-scratches are only visible when you reflect the turned off screen against light eg. Sun. But then, why would you blind yourself?

I’ve never used a screen guard with any iPad that I’ve owned, but always use a magnetic folio case, which is quite protective. (I’ve never bothered with a keyboard since I’m hunt and peck anyway, and prefer portrait mode.). Also, I use my iPads strictly indoors.

For this latest model, due to the new screen technology, I have gone with AppleCare+, and it’s the first time that I’ve opted for AppleCare+.

It is not all about protection. I do not care about safety as I have folio case. But it is about writing. I study university and there is a difference between writing on naked display or writing with paperlike screenshield.
I do not want to put matte screenshield on iPad Pro again because of lower display quality and uncomfortable touch interface but it looks like I have to if I want to use it for writing. ?

On a side note to what I said earlier, I usually use a protective screen guard on my iPhone XR in addition to a wallet type folio case, since the phone is subject to a bit more rugged use, and is carried in my pocket, but since the iPad is used under relatively benign conditions, I have just preferred to forego the screen guard for that device.

Iphone XR has very weak glass so there is screen shield a must. But iPhone 12 Pro does not need it.

I didn't have one on my last iPad Pro but somehow the 2021 12.9 screen coating is extra-smudgy and can create an uneven pencil feel, so I'm considering putting one on again. What matte screen protectors are folks using?

This is the one I’m using with good results.

How is the clarity? I saw a friend’s older 12.9” this evening and the clarity of the text on the screen was really disappointing with a matte screen, but my friend was fine with it.

It doesn’t bother me at all - seems very clear. From the comments in this thread some people really obsess over this, so YMMV.

I obsess over textual clarity because of my lifelong issues with vision, I guess. The three options — glass, matte, or nothing — seem to be a “pick your poison” decision. Glad you’re happy with yours.

Most people who put screen protector on their phone or tablet don’t really care about oleophobic coatings or anything else apple does to the screen prior to their purchase.

Mine has been naked since day one. Got a Paperlike and Belkin Tempered Glass on standby but the mini-led screen is too sexy to cover up.

Yes. Protects screen from scratches, breaks and fingerprints. Does not affect functionality of screen whatsoever.
Indeed, it doesn't. But that silky-velvety smoothness when you touch the naked screen... oh! You can't feel it anymore with a screen protector on.
