Do you really think Apple will devote significant resources to iPad when they didn't with iOS 9 and 10?

iOS 9 brought split view and extensions, that was quite a big leap for the iPad. iOS 11 will clearly include iPad features - they were whispered about for 10.x but delayed apparently.

I'm pleased with the 10.5 inch as it seems to be:

- Much slimmer bezels on the left and right
- Resolution of the 12.9in Pro in the portable-sized body, meaning:-
- Apps run at "full" resolution in split view (e.g. tabs in Safari will show)

The slightly larger body should mean a better battery. And if we get an upgraded Pencil or Smart Keyboard, that will be a bonus. Add matte black will be a really different looking iPad to what we've seen since the iPad Air launched.

It'll be a Day 1 buy for me.

When rumors for the 10.5 iPad first surfaced, they dipicted an all-new device unlike any we have seen before. It would be totally edgeless, with no home button, all packed into the 9.7 form factor. Skip to 5 months later, and most of these features have disappeared except the 10.5 size. It's not going to be edgeless -- it'll have significantly smaller bezels but will still have some, it will positively still have a home button, it definitely won't feature an OLED screen and it simply won't be the revolutionary device I hoped for to re-energize the iPad line. Initially I was considering selling my 9.7 IPP and buying one of these new 10.5 iPads, but now I simply won't bother. I'll hold on to my current 9.7 Pro until some real revolutionary changes come. I think it's unfortunate that once again Apple has held back what they can do, simply so they can release a new model every year. And I think this shows that iPad users will still stick with their models for 3 cycles and not become annual upgraders like Apple hopes for.

EDIT: OLED was mentioned in rumors about 10.5 iPad in reference to 2018 models, not this year's.

I have been a yearly upgrader for years and have no regrets. I think you allowed your imagination to go wild when reading rumors and much of the stuff you mention had to come from your imagination.

If not happy with Apple then Samsung has a tablet for you.

Yeah no thanks I like iOS and all my other devices are iOS. And none of the things I listed I "imagined" they were all published on MacRumors and exchanged on these forums. But you're right maybe I should just get used to Apple stretching out improvements so they can release a new device every year because they know people like you will buy it.

I think it's a fine update and I like what they did. What I don't like is how they held back updates they could very well implement along with the new size and that would have brought so much more hype to the iPad. And that means it won't be a "day 1 buy" for 9.7 pro users like me, because they simply didn't take advantage of this introduction of a new size to make concrete changes and updates.

You should sue them.

At least for me, thank goodness the galaxy tab S3 exists......

I had a close look at the S3, i like how it looks and the AMOLED display, but from what i read about Samsung they are lacking in the software updates compared to Apple, plus lack of tablet optimised apps for android, and the battery usage time seems a bit lowish compared to iPads. Those three things are a deal breaker for me. A pity really.

While I'm not disappointed nor was I expecting some crazy 10.5" iPad, I am curious about when/if they'll make a change from the current design with chamfered edges. It's coming up on 5 years when that design was first launched with the iPad mini, iPod touch and (partially) with the iPhone 5.

I mean, it is just a large slab of glass essentially, but curious where they would go with it next.

I just don't want them to go with a curved glass as those things are a bloody nightmare putting screen protectors on

What features did they hold back? I don't understand it when people say things like this. There are trade offs with all new technologies. Maybe they add 3D touch last year but the iPad becomes much heavier, no one wants that. What are you really expecting year after year from a rectangular screen? People's expectations are a little ridiculous these days. We, collectively, have no idea what it takes to execute on millions of devices like this year after year. And who says it needs to be a day 1 buy for you or anyone? If you are happy with your current device, enjoy it and move on. If what comes out has features you want, sell and upgrade. I don't see Apple at fault here.

But I don't find the bezels on my Mini 4 or 12.9 Pro to be an impediment, nor would I see reducing them to be a benefit.

I was again checking out a black iPad Pro in one of the Apple stores and I was watching a video stored in it and I was just trying to visualise that what if as in the soon to be expected 10.5" iPad Pro the bezels were a little less of the current 9.7" iPad Pro especially when held horizontally would it make viewing any more pleasurable? Will the current bezel size of the iPad Pro start becoming an impediment once the reduced bezel 10.5" iPad Pro releases ?

So don't expect a bezel free iPad this year, I guess they're saving it for their 2018 OLED major refresh that's been rumored for a while now. Personally I like bezels on tablets because it makes sense due to the way it's held. But ergonomics are increasingly less important for Apple.

Do one of these 10.5" line up with those case leaks the other day? One of them showed a potential 10.5 with some much tighter bezels (not bezel-less though).

Why do you have two different 10.5" iPad Pro in the illustration that you have shared.

The first one shows the 10.5" iPad based on my information, while the second one shows a 10.5" display in the same form factor as the 9.7" model (which was originally predicted).

The middle one is the realistic design based on my information, which I believe is in line with the case leaks. As for the tighter bezels, that seemed like a separate report, showing renders based on rumors and in my view seems inaccurate although I believe the CAD model images are genuine. As much as I would like it to happen, I don't expect to see it. There would be slight decrease in bezel width, but only by 0.1mm on either end.

Of course, there's a chance that I could be wrong but we'll just have to wait and see... less than 10 days to go !

I agree...some bezel is preferred on the iPad.

Oled for the iPad in 2018?...that I'm doubting right now. Though if the 12.9 doesnt get refreshed this year...then it might have some validity.

There was this picture also that came up which kind of matches with the middle image that you have shared.

Yeah that's the one that I was talking about when I said I believe it to be inaccurate or at least not a good representation what it will look like. But again, there's a chance i'm wrong but theres not long to go before we find out!

I'm getting a lot of hate and not much support for my opinions but I just want to say that whilst I think the new device will be a fine update I wish they just would have taken this opportunity to debut a new type of iPad and add some cool new features to the iPad line but it's basically just a slightly resized 9.7 Pro. I think if Apple has any expectations of this fixing declining sales they're sorely mistaken.
