I'm getting a lot of hate and not much support for my opinions but I just want to say that whilst I think the new device will be a fine update I wish they just would have taken this opportunity to debut a new type of iPad and add some cool new features to the iPad line but it's basically just a slightly resized 9.7 Pro. I think if Apple has any expectations of this fixing declining sales they're sorely mistaken.

No, their attempt at fixing sales was the new iPad in March. I think the market that is causing decline isn't only one that is desperate for new features, but one that doesn't see the point in upgrading when it will cost $500 to do so, regardless of an OLED display, embedded home button, or thinner bezels.

This resize isn't just for the sake of it. This is intended to be the true version of the smaller Pro, and it will make the models a bit clearer to consumers. What they in the process of is cleaning up the iPad line. It's been rumored for a while that the 2018 model will be a major overhaul. We know that includes OLED, and can assume we may see design changes and thinner bezels.

But I think everyone would like to see bigger changes to the iPad line, but this could be a solid upgrade.

How many iOS devices does one need?
I only have 3, my iphone, iPad and Apple Watch (which isn't technically iOS but still relies on iOS.). Trust me here are thousands of other people on these forums you should go after for having an obscene number of iOS devices :p

Yeah that's the one that I was talking about when I said I believe it to be inaccurate or at least not a good representation what it will look like. But again, there's a chance i'm wrong but theres not long to go before we find out!

No but the picture I have shared matches with the the middle image of the picture that you have shared ? So what are you talking about ?

Yes, it looks like iPad mini sized side bezels, i.e. 7mm as opposed to the 9mm of the current 9.7" Pro. I'm thinking that is what to go to the bank with...

What pro work do people really want to do on a 10.5" screen. Programming? Video editing? 3d modeling? What is ios holding back exactly?
This looks like a great improvement on an already awesome device: great for notes, art, etc. It is the perfect thin client. Accept it for what it is: a complimentary device.

There were definitely assumptions of no home button because of the edgeless aspect of the rumors. Can't really be edgeless if it has a bezel to house the home button :p

Samsung has managed fine on its phones, home button and all. There has to be a top bezel regardless, since you need some space to house the front and back cameras. I don't think Apple is dropping Facetime anytime soon.

Actually, it was reported that Apple is working on "Group" FaceTime that would involve multiple users at once. Seems like a very believable rumor. Here Is a link to the article.

The image you shared has thinner bezels all around and while I agree that the bezels will be thinner, I don't believe it will be that drastic. Maybe the image has the dimensions correct but the proportions are wrong in my opinion.

So the image that you have shared especially the middle image, has only the dimensions different but otherwise it has the same thick bezels as the current 9.7" iPad Pro. is your source dependable ?

While for many I would assume the iPad is currently a complimentary device, it is and also can be a primary device for many consumers.

As for the name Pro, honestly I think it is just a simple marketing tactic to separate two lines of devices & features. I wouldn't take it literally that it's intended for professional users of some sort.

I think that the easiest way to improve iPad sales (at the cost of iPhone sales) is to put a voice cell chip in it, and update it every year, and have a voice cell chip in it. I'd happily give up my iPhone for an iPad with a voice chip in it. I think, when the new iPad comes out, I'll just use the sharing on it, and see how that works.

Technically cellular iPads do have the requirements to make cellular phone calls, but it's not enabled in software. Even if it could be setup as an iPhone and be your primary device for cellular calls, I can't imagine it would be more than a niche set of users who would carry an iPad around instead of an iPhone. Having AirPods that can quickly connect to any of these devices helps this as well when needing to make or receive a call.

On that topic, I really hope we move in the other direction (which is kind of happening) - allowing any of our devices to make calls, and slowly remove dependence on a phone number / cellular carrier.

Myself, personally, I think that iPad sales are ok. Improvement would definitely be welcomed, but I don't think we can expect iPads to have insane growth like iPhones. The sales seem to be slowly levelling off, and if they settle on say 10M per quarter (~double the Mac unit sales) going forward, would that be a bad thing?

On an aside of going phone-less - yesterday evening I went to an event and was in a rush when leaving and forgot my iPhone. The venue was city owned and had wifi that I had connected to in the past, so with just my watch I was connected to calls, messages, email and any first party apps were working. Very freeing feeling being at an event with no iPhone distraction, but still seeing several messages come through, or the ability to take a call if something urgent came up.

All that makes a lot of sense and gives much needed flexibility in Apples range of devices.
