About 200 more mb on portal...

I haven't played it yet, and there is a lot of hype. I hope it is as good as some people say.

Well, I don't bootcamp my MBP (been lazy about updating the firmware on the SSD), but here's my thoughts on the matter.

I've had to quit steam about twice - the first time it just stopped responding, the other time it claimed that I was running a game when I first tried launching Portal.

Portal itself isn't too hot - haven't tweaked any major settings yet, but 1600x1000 is the best rez I can get out of it. 1900x1200 causes framerate drops. And (from what I can tell) the OSX mouse acceleration isn't helping the game much, either. Feels klunky, but I'm sure some updates will get pushed to help polish it.

That's the bad news. The Ugly News is that for whatever reason it doesn't consume more resources when settings are raised - hl2_osx tacks out about 35% for me, and Steam at around 15%. Could be the idiot that I am is running it with VMWare in the background, but still my processor isn't getting used 100% (more like 50% on each core), so...

The good news? Actually is playable as compared to running it in Crossover or *snort* VMWare. Bonus: higher resolution.

Steam for Mac is a keeper.

Bought torchlight and trying to download portal.

Torchlight has ran perfectly on my mac pro at 1920x1200. No problems whatsoever.

Can't fault them for portal though, its a free game on rollout, bound to be busy.

I'd buy Torchlight, but I'm not sure if it would work on my macbook pro 13" (its from last summer).

I'm downloading portal to see how it performs, then I might get Torchlight.

edit: when Counter Strike (source) gets up and going... Then I will be happy. I'm glad summer is coming, because I will be very distracted as soon as CS:S hits.

Portal was fun but I have three levels left after an hour? Surely it's longer than this...

And aparrently my Macbook pro is a better gaming rig than I thought... How do you add friends on it?

How do you add friends on it?

You can either search for them under Friends in the Community tab, or by hitting "Add a friend" in the box that pops up when you hit view friends in the lower right-hand corner.

Running fine on my 8600gt.

I can't get it to download Portal. I click the "Get it Now" button and all I get is a blank screen? grmbl

Same here. You have to find a link somewhere else... like on the news page or something. I can't remember exactly where I got it to download from, but it is possible.

It's Steam for mac, I'm happy that the damn thing even exists in the first place...

No bugs found for me, bit laggy (in Portal) in places, but my MBP is a few years old now, think it's beginning to show it's age.

And FYI, I downloaded Portal in just under 30 minutes, and when considering just how many people prolly downloaded Portal (it was free for Windows users too...) I'd say it ran pretty smoothly.

Can't wait to see what else is gunna be coming our way.

You guys are unbelievable.

Valve has committed themselves entirely into pushing the Mac platform into the area of PC gaming like no other company has in the history of Apple computers, and is thus helping to shape the PC gaming industry to acknowledge the Mac and take the platform as seriously as it's PC counterpart.

In other words, gaming just got a whole lot serious on the Mac today. And this is what happens. B!tching and whining, as usual.

Seriously, give these guys a pat on the back. A bright future of Mac gaming was just planted today. Valve should be deserving only praises.

How can you be disappointed? The premier PC game distribution system now has a native Mac client with native Mac games and plenty more to come, and you're worried about the scrolling speed of the launcher app?

I'd say the big picture gains for Mac gaming in general FAR outweigh any little interface gripes - ones that show up in plenty of 1.0 products. Give Valve the credit they deserve for bringing Source and many other games to OS X.

I find their notification system.... terrible in execution and poorly designed.

Why on earth haven't they used Growl, the "unofficial" UNIVERSAL notification system on the Mac ?

Agree. But this is the typical BS you get from Apple Users, They dont care about the biger picture, But ill be damned if we dont get pretty polished GUI. Im done here. Going back to playing.

Agreed. This is a no-brainer. Their notifications seem flakey..

so, i think it is great. it looks fine. who cares about sharp corners? it looks fine. it runs great. i had portal downloaded a week ago and just got to play today. it works fine, wonderfully. i had one crash when steam froze, but that was once. i am dloading torchlight at the moment too. the icon is barely bigger. woop-dee-doo.

everything is grand. and a very impressive amount of games for launch, though most are indie. i'm not that big on most indie games. only problem is TF2 dissappeared from my game list. not sure what the deal is, every other steam game i have is still there. i assume its nothing. i couldn't be happier, excellent work valve!

Unfortunately, I wouldn't bet on any GUI enhancements in the near future. They just finally updated their last GUI, which lasted about 6 years.

zero complaints over here. it just came out today you have to expect it to be treading the waters. i think its awesome that we get Steam

The Steam application itself does seem a little sluggish.

Portal runs okay - buts it's not my type of game.

Bought Civ IV complete - at first it wouldn't download - then it downloads, I'm able to play for 45 minutes. Then when I try to play again it keeps crashing 2 minutes into the game. And by "crash" I mean locks up completely so that I have to do a hard reboot.

So I'm incredibly disappointed right now. And what's worst - they have my money and I have nothing to show for it - not even a response from their tech support.
