So far Im not impressed. The games included with it on launch were a joke except for tourchlight and Portal. Where in the holy hell is L4D, L4D II, KF, HL and TF?!?!!? Valves own games no less!! What about Steamplay!??! I have these games on windoze steam already....they are the only reason I dual boot windows. It's like a cruel joke, they delayed it for nothing, only to deliver this client with 2 playable games!!! Valve pisses me off so much they lie all the time with every announcement they make. All valves game will be available at launch.....Steam and it's library will be available in april....the list goes on, they are so full of ****. Valve are either good at full of **** statements or are lazier than a cut buck....

:apple: Get some good games on steam QUICK and stop f*cking around with mac users.

When I launched it and logged in the following occured:

Killing Floor appeared as a playable game, started to download then vanished. Portal began to download and stopped, not it wont resume or do anything. Tourch Light I haven't tried yet and the rest are a joke...something you would buy in a 5 dollar value pack from wal-mart. Steam also crashed on me like 7 times.

Notification system is fine, also you'd better get used to it because it won't be changing.

Steamplay is on there, like 60 games are using it. Valve don't make KF, and there are more than two good games. Their other games obviously aren't ready, would you really want to download games that aren't finished? And Steam is still an Open Beta, so it's going to have glitches.

I have only minor complaints about Steam itself. It doesn't recognize keyboard shortcuts for forward and back like it does under Windows ie: "Apple [" It also doesn't respect it's assigned Space via Spaces Preferences. It will happily start up and stay in any space even if it is restricted to a different one. It also doesn't seem to want to recognize the F13 - F19 keys.

Otherwise it has been running fine for me all day with no crashes and no problems logging in (except the very first time that took 3 tries).

I was disappointed with the performance of Portal under OS X as I detailed here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/9891007/

Here is a shortcut to save download time if you already have the game installed under Boot Camp:

For those complaining about Valve's complete catalog not being available at launch, while disappointing, it is not surprising. It was mentioned on Tuesday:
https://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/11/portal-and-touchlight-amongst-mac-steam-launch-titles/

... new games will be released every Wednesday.

Valve's own Portal (above) is one of the launch titles...

Since it was the only one mentioned it was all I was expecting today. My prediction is that we'll see TF2 next Wednesday since it was the other game playable during the Mac beta test, but arrived about a week after Portal during the beta.

If nothing else, spacing the games out helps distribute the hit on the content servers. I imagine they picked Wednesday as one of the slower gaming days of the week. Think of how much worse all the complaining would be if everyone was trying to download their complete library right now instead of just Portal.

.

I'm happy with it.
Give them same time and they will fix all the problems. Although I don't expect the performance to be on par with windows 7 until at least OS X 10.7.

I have the same Mini (see my sig). Portal run fine on mine as well, if I don't push the resolution too much. Would be better with a Mac Pro, though.. :)

I have a HP2010i 1600x900 monitor and I am running portal at 1280x720. Looks good, not a big gamer. Just looking forward to left 4 dead. The mini handles it fine at pretty decent settings in bootcamp so should be all set for mac release.

I just wanna get some visible FPS to see what im running at.

EDIT: Thanks FLASH SWT!

Running at 30fps with dips to 26 fps on these settings:

Just on training level at mo, I can more than likely expect heavy drops in actions scenes. Maybe more tweaking to be done.

You guys are unbelievable.

Valve has committed themselves entirely into pushing the Mac platform into the area of PC gaming like no other company has in the history of Apple computers, and is thus helping to shape the PC gaming industry to acknowledge the Mac and take the platform as seriously as it's PC counterpart.

In other words, gaming just got a whole lot serious on the Mac today. And this is what happens. B!tching and whining, as usual.

Seriously, give these guys a pat on the back. A bright future of Mac gaming was just planted today. Valve should be deserving only praises.

As long as they get my money, I'm going to be bitching. My money is my pat on the back. Valve is a great company. I absolutely love them. They are one of the few game companies which made playing on PC actually not suck. So I had hopes. They weren't met. I bitch. And still buy their games and other games from Steam. No harm done. It's the carrot and the stick.

Err... Still Disappointed

I love that everyone thinks I'm complaining about Portal's downloading speed, and I can't make an assessment if I don't purchase at least one game. FYI, none of the other games interest me. Don't get me wrong, there are some greats, Braid and World of Goo to name a few, but I own them already, outside of Steam, and I'm not purchasing them again thank you very much!

Why can't some people understand it's the UI, it looks and feels so foreign on my Mac. Yeah we'll probably spend 90% of the time playing games on Steam, but during that 10% don't we deserve a Mac-like experience we've come accustomed to? Isn't that the reason a lot of us migrated away from Windows?

We have some beautiful apps on the Mac, check out the work done by (http://panic.com/) or (http://macrabbit.com/). I've steered clear of Windows for many years now to avoid these ugly choppy apps, so I'm not about to embrace this, despite it being a wonderful platform. I love Valve as much as the next man and respect them tremendously, I'm just not happy with the execution. Surely they could of hired some experienced Mac developers to help make the transition to the Mac, they've got the resources after all.

No. not disappointed. Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis ftw. Running on a Mac Pro, with voices! Only played the text-only version. And I'm sure I get awesome FPS on this game.

Considering that I've yet been able to actually play anything yet because every game crashes as soon as I open them.

Yes I am disappointed.

*edit* Not so disappointed any more. Got it working. And I'm loving being able to play steam games in OSX at native resolution of 2560x1600 smooth as butter.

Can't wait till the game catalog increases.

I haven't had any problems that anybody here has been describing. Downloaded Steam, logged in, downloaded Portal, Braid, Osmos, and Torchlight at 1.2Mb/sec - and they run just fine.

Sorry for the people who do have problems. Keep with it though - Steam is the way to go for games.

I am not a big fan of the new UI, but the steam UI has changed quite a bit over the years (I have used it since day 1.) There are definitely some problems, but the thing is the Steam platform allows them to push out updates immediately.

The two worst parts for me are the scrolling which is terrible and playing video previews which seems to make it crash every time. (Plus the videos are terrible quality)

I think some people here don't get how big this could be. Steamplay means that Windows users who have acquired many titles from Steam will be able to put most of them on their Mac out of the box, not having to re-buy anything.

And to those complaining about the Portal download, this usually happens with large releases. They are letting people download a 3GB file from their servers, so everyone with just a light curiosity is doing it. Once the free Portal effect wears off the servers will balance out. This is why for big game releases they let you pre-download all the game files so the servers aren't blown away by the spike in demand.

I downloaded Steam last night, and left Portal downloading overnight. Had a quick go this morning, and everything was running lovely (Mac Pro 8 Core Clovertown + XFX 4870 1GB). I think this is a HUGE moment for Mac gaming - Ok, so there's only 1 Valve game available at the moment, but I bet there's more added VERY soon.

To be honest, when I downloaded the client last night, and saw the amount of games available from the start, I was really excited. This reminded me of vintage Apple launches and announcments, you know, when they were not just all about the 'magical' iPap.

So, personally, I'm not at all disappointed - Going to get the Indie game pack tonight, as I really want to play Machinarium. :) Looking forward to more 'Source' games, but I can wait.

Portal doesn't work for me, it crashed after I tweaked the graphics settings a little, then it never launch again.

On the other hand, Torchlight works perfect...
