I want to strongly advice against anyone considering to upgrade to OS5.0. The os is very unstable and you can be sure that your apps will have problems - even after updating. First I couldn't even start the app. Rebooted the phone - same result. Updated all apps and then I could start but at least for Skype and Msn they kicks me out of the app every now and then.
Unfortunately greedy Apple don't allow me to go back to the previous version without stealing all my purchased apps and data. If I want the apps back I have to purchase again they tell me!!!!
The data - just forget about it.

At this time DO NOT UPGRADE you iPhone until Apple has fixed a stable version and tested through the apps for compatibility with the new os.

iOS 5 is a lot more stable iOS 4 was last summer, so maybe you need to do a restore (not from a backup)

FYI, developers are the ones who are supposed to test their apps for compatibility with the betas Apple provided for 3 months before releasing the public version of iOS 5, so maybe it's the developers fault your app doesn't work, not Apple

Have you tried a 'reset all settings' in Settings > General > Reset. That helped me with app crashes in ios5.

I'm running iOS 5 on about seven devices without issue. You can't roll back to the previous OS, but I'd recommend you do a restore (and not restore from a backup). (Keep in mind you'll lose any unsaved data.)

You shouldn't ever have to purchase your apps again. Once you've purchased an app, you can re-download it as many times as you like.

You might want to Reset All Settings or Restore if such issues are re-occuring. In regards to application instability, many are not yet compatible with OS 5 so try to look for updates.

Apple announced that from Wednesday to Sunday, 25 million people downloaded iOS 5, so I guess we're all screwed because we didn't wait for the final go-ahead for this guy (OP).

I always advise when moving from one major iOS version to another to restore their iPhone as a new device.

I also advise restoring as new to people who are having poor battery life issues too.

Overall, I'm pleased with iOS 5, its got some great new features and I for one am pleased I upgraded. Also, I have not had any apps that have not worked/worked correctly with iOS 5. I have a system monitoring app which is not the latest version of it, and it works perfectly too with iOS 5.

Just to update re battery life.

I fully charged my iPhone 4 on Monday evening (17 October). I'm a light user admittedly, but currently my iPhone's battery is showing 32 %. I tend to switch off the phone at around 11pm and it gets switched on again at 6:45am when I get up. So for me, I think this is better battery life than I was seeing with iOS 4, whether the improvement is solely down to doing a restore as new or iOS 5, then I'm not sure, I just thought I would add my bit of info on battery life.

My 4S is arriving on Monday , but I'm planning on just restoring this from the backup I created a few days ago after I restored my iPhone 4 as new (basically I took the backup straight after I had got everything put back on), as this backup should be new and fresh and there shouldn't be any corrupt data in it, with it been taken from a freshly restored as new device. If I have battery issues with the 4S (after I have done 3 complete discharges/charges) then I'll restore it as new.

Give the guy a break, he clearly is having some problems with his upgrade, although he could have worded it better.

Is this new then because I lost some apps when I was experimenting with jailbreak last year and I was told I would need to repurchase, is this still not the case. I know that if you have backed up to iCloud you can re-download but I somehow doubt he is in the cloud yet.

This is the best advise imo, also you really should have backed up everything before starting a major system upgrade. While I have some sympathy for your plight I think much of it is self inflicted.

Only issues with crashing apps for me are on my upgraded ipad1 ... used a very old backup in the office because I can't get to my actual library until the weekend. But I am sure it will be fixed (as it was the same with ios 3>4) once I restore, setup as new device and then restore the backup to get my Angry Birds progress back

As far back as I can remember, you have always been able to re-download purchased apps again by clicking on "buy" again, then when he download initiated you will have gotten a warning letting you know that you have previously downloaded the app and that this download would be free.

But since iOS 4.3.3 during WWDC 2011, Apple made it more easier to identify purchased Apps with the Purchased button under the Update tab in the App Store, free and paid apps now had a cloud symbol, indicating that you can re-download that app at no additional feee.

iOS 5 now replaced the Price with an Install button (again, no fee to re-download).

Why would Internet melt down for only 21 million apple users updating their phone? In Europe at least we use gsm to phone. Tried to skype with the iPhone but was kicked out. Still internet is working (fine). Obvoiusly a more robust thing than iPhone os - but it has been around for a while too

I am just giving people that have not yet upgraded the advice to wait until the new os is more stable. I had to restore and loose data to get it working at all and I am not impressed by the way that Apple has handled it. Maybe os4 was even worse when it was first released but the version that came with my phone in January has been more stable than the new one. Maybe it will be better after a few new updates.

I don't agree that developers outside Apple have to switch over to make a new version tested and available in such a short notice as 3 months just because Apple is changing specs. It was not just one app that had problems and even though they can be launched they are not working as well as they did before.

My 4s of course came with ios 5 installed and over all I am quiet pleased...However I have had some problems with several of my apps crashing. Mostly the Twitter apps...I have yet to be able to open and use icall which always crashes.Has no one else experienced simular issues?....My wife's 3Gs upgraded...as new...with no issues. I too would recomend to everyone to up grade to ios 4 with confidense.....

Wow, thanks for the warning. I just wish you'd been around before I upgraded to iOS 5.0 on all my devices.

1. Some dev's are quicker on the ball than others
2. Some dev's won't even bother updating apps and will just hope/assume it'll work
3. Apple only began accepting iOS5 tested apps right before the go-live so it'll take a while for every single app to come through

Personally, i've had about 4 or 5 apps failing either sporadically or consistently only 1 of which the dev has acknowledged as an issue

You don't have to install iOS5 on an older device on day 1 .... end user should check any mission-critical apps for recent updates and compatibility before taking the plunge if its such an issue.

For new device owners (which i count myself in) then its hobsons choice .... we just have to wait and hope our favourite apps are developed by people/companies that give a crap
