I want to strongly advice against anyone considering to upgrade to OS5.0. The os is very unstable and you can be sure that your apps will have problems - even after updating. First I couldn't even start the app. Rebooted the phone - same result. Updated all apps and then I could start but at least for Skype and Msn they kicks me out of the app every now and then.
Unfortunately greedy Apple don't allow me to go back to the previous version without stealing all my purchased apps and data. If I want the apps back I have to purchase again they tell me!!!!
The data - just forget about it.

At this time DO NOT UPGRADE you iPhone until Apple has fixed a stable version and tested through the apps for compatibility with the new os.

I think I know what the OP did. I did the same thing.

When you upgrade the OS, the apps take a long time to synch and transfer all the settings. The lock screen no longer shows a message that says its synching. There is now a small spinning wheel in the status bar. It may appear that your phone is finished, but it is still transferring all the apps.

The iTunes window will show apps synching. But if you just look at the phone it is very easy to assume that your phone is finished when in fact it is not. I made this same mistake and my apps would not open. They would flash for a sec and go back to the home screen.

iOS 5 has been great for me ( once I synced all my apps properly). It's fast, reliable and battery life even seems to be a bit better (was jail broken before)

Two devices upped to ios5 without a hitch or app issue.

sorry mate but your bad experience isn't enough to warn people off. For my iPhone 4 IOS5 has been fantastic, lots of things improved and my battery is so much better. Only one app isn't compatible everything else runs smooth.
A mate on iPhone 3gs cant believe how much her phone has improved since ios5. On the whole and incredibly positive experience.
My sisters 3rd Gen Ipod is also much better for the update.

nearly everything about this is wrong

"they make me buy my apps again" -no, just no

"apple has to test all the apps" -that is up to the developer, not apple, they had somewhere around 3 months with iOS 5 to iron everything out

among many other false statements

The Operating System is a week or so old.

Did someone upgrading expect to have it be perfect? If you ordered the 4s, you knew that iOS5 was going to be on it and new.

If you didn't want any issues, you should have waited months for the bugs to be worked out.

Uhh. You clearly have never learned what a 'beta' is. iOS 5 is so much older than one week.

Hmmmm. I smell BS here...

1. I've been using iOS 5 since Beta 1. Whilst I had some stability issues on a couple of the Beta versions, it has been throughout my testing, very stable.

2. even if you could downgrade to iOS 4 without having a JB (you can't now BTW) Apple would let you download all purchased apps again, or they could be restored on a sync with iTunes.
