Some naysayers seem to keep repeating just how wrong the iPad is (No front camera, no flash, no back camera, no flash, No OSX, no flash, no multitasking, no flash, no OLED, no flash, no built in HW keyboard, No flash...) Oh and no Flash.

If it is so wrong, do any of you actually think it is wrong enough to fail??

IMO the deficiencies(even the aparently horribly grievous no flash) are largely hot air; just an excuse to complain. The device will be an excellent reader/surfer/app platform tablet that will be a joy to actually use and sell robustly.

Do you disagree? Are the shortcomings fatal, or just something to complain about?

I think it can fail but not because of the reasons you pointed out from the Naysayers, if it fails it will fail beacuse there's no market for it, as has been the case with tablets from other companies.

But Apple isn't other companies that's why I think it will succeed.

The shortcomings are something to complain about.

However, the iPad is in no way a "magical" device and while it won't fail, I don't think it will have the draw to it that Apple is hoping for - especially since there is so much overlap with the iPhone and iPod touch.

its not an excuse to complain, just reasons to hold off buying one until they include features that some of us want in this device...

They know it will sell that is why they are hating on it. I don't see why anyone could not like the ipad did they even watch the keynote

Hating on it? What are we - 15?

And I saw the keynote. I wasn't sold. Sorry if you don't understand that. Sounds like a problem on your end, not mine.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

It's Apple's next AppleTV, Mac mini, on Hifi. Cute little pet projects of Jobs that hang around, don't sell particularly well, and don't see many updates. Sure it will sell, but not like an iPhone or iPod.

For me no sale.
I find the iphone annoying enough that I can't have my email, facebook, and safari open at the same time without having to constantly restart something as I switch between programs.
To me its an ipod touch on steroids.
The device needs a real OS on it, something that will afford the user notebook capabilities.

I have no idea if it will be a roaring success or a total failure, I haven't laid my hands on one yet so can't really pass judgement. It might even just do ok, who knows?

There are no guarantees and given the tepid response from both the media and many Mac fans. There is a real possibility that the iPad could fail. Its not the first time apple whiffed on a product. Just go back to the G4 Cube for one of its biggest misses.

I think a more adequate comparison is the macbook air. The MBA isn't really considered a "pet project" like those others but it doesn't really sell phenominally because there isn't really a huge market for it. It's just kind of a filler line that Apple made because it would be "really cool!" (and shiny)

I disagree, I'm fairly sure there is NO way the iPad can fail. Fail is fairly relative, but as it is the media is changing their tune. Worst case scenario for Apple is that it doesn't sell like hot cakes after the initial launch (which it most likely WILL sell) so they announce 4.0, or cut the price, and viola, huge hit. Sales boom.

What I don't think people take into account is the sheer mass amount of mind share Apple has among youth. These kids will scoop up the device to show their friends, and why shouldn't they? I think over the next few months the iPad will really come into its own.

I'm not a naysayer, I don't wish fail on it, but at the moment I realize its not for me.
When they put a built in usb and make it a master device instead of a slave, I will buy one.

Really? So what are you waiting for? When do you think it is coming? Are you going to complain until it gets here?

I don't know what I'm specifically waiting for. Actually I do - and it could come with OS 4.0. But who knows.

And I have no idea when the change is coming. Will I complain until it gets here? I don't know - will you call me a hater until it doesn't? Am I complaining or expressing my viewpoint? Without differing opinions on a message board, do you have any idea how boring this place would be?

If you don't like my posts or someone who disagrees with you or has a differing viewpoint. Don't read.

Yeah I think there is a chance that it fails because the market doesn't exist.

There is nobody in the space yet, so Apple is hoping to create an entirely new market place. Only time will tell if they are successful. I would I would given them better than even odds at this point, but you never know.

I don't know if it's bad enough to fail but I'm sure it's totally wrong by design and by concept.

You see, Apple probably wanted to answer those complaints about them not selling a netbook when anybody else did. The problem was that they couldn't allow themselves to sell cheap computers because it would require them to lower their trademark quality. So their solution was to lower the value of the product and convince people that they need it anyway.

For some users, those who barely use their computers or don't use it for complex tasks, it is a great device. For what I believe is most users, this device is unnecessary and uncomfortable to use. However, people do want multi-touch in their computers so they want the iPad to succeed but I believe there are better ways to implement multi-touch without having to lower the value of the product or convince customers that they need a 3rd category.

The reason I complain is because of what I see as an attempt to trap users within Apple's closed garden using steve's magical power on them and that may severely hurt the whole industry. In other words, look what Apple is doing with the App-Store - do you really want them to take over your computers too?

The ipad will be a success because The apps.

This is key as well.

The fact that it will launch with so much functionality and be quickly followed up with enhanced and new apps to utilize it will make a huge difference.

People will see a use for them and will then buy one.

It may fail, and it may be ridiculously succesful because it serves such an interesting middle ground that may just be what the marketplace has been looking for all around.

Look at how popular netbooks are because people are looking for something smaller but more useful. Yet netbooks essentially suck. So I think given that you can expect the new tablet market (as opposed to the old tablet market which was just putting a regular computer in a flat box with a screen on it), may be substantial.

I don't know if it's bad enough to fail but I'm sure it's totally wrong by design and by concept.

That kind of absolutest statement reveals a personality incapable of grasping it's own fallibility. The intellectual equivalent of the people on AI who think they are the greatest singer in the world and they open their mouth and it sounds like alley cats mating. Just because you don't get it, doesn't make it totally wrong.

The iPad appears to be the slickest net tablet/reader demonstrated so far. It may have some issues, but to call it totally wrong in design and concept is absurd.

If this is totally wrong in design and concept it would be a epic failure in the market as well.

lol +1000

That is so true, it's amazing to see those people actually looks shocked or refuse to leave, when in their head they are convinced they can sing.

Not everyone is to that extreme that dislikes the iPad, but some people are not in touch with reality at all.

That's the problem right there. It's marketed as this "magical" device when really it's just a ebook reader/video player. For "magical" I expect it to do something that a lowly $300 netbook can't do.

While there are a lot of overlapping features, I'm fairly certain the iPad will excel in almost all areas that a netbook only kind of does the bare minimum. It may not be an open platform, but things will work fluidly.

Most people have very hard time putting themselves in others shoes. If something "doesn't work for them", they think it'll work for nobody. That's why a lot of them say "fail". They don't realize that they're simply not the typical user. Anybody can have an opinion, but that doesn't make them an expert.

Most people ultimately decide to buy things - all things - because they have an emotional reaction to them. Not because it meets this spec or that one. If the item is pleasant to use, feels good in your hands, is a joy to look at... that's why they'll buy it. It's the same reason people buy big-screen TVs, hot tubs, and art.
