Not WiFi option. Basically faster chip and 5G support
The usual IPP cycle is 18 months so that fits with this. I dare say it will be just a 5g update at the end of the year and A14X will come with the one towards the end of next year.

^^This^^
plus I got my iPad Pro on Jan. 3rd 2019, so it’s only just a year and 2 months old.
The power of this thing is still immense and overkill TBH.
The iPad Pro 3 was and is the iPad I’d always wanted from Apple, and so far *knock on wood* it has not disappointed.

I agree with “^^This^^” lol

If you don’t think about the month part of it, it’s hard to think it’s only been a little over a year. It’s easy to think 2. But the A12X is still a beast, basically like you mentioned. It’ll have support for years to come. Same with the 12Z.

Actualy if they update it to A14X and 5G, why wouldn't it be counted as a major upgrade? I mean ok there may not be a redesign..etc but if the iPad and the technology is going towards to the AR and VR world, may be what our ipads cannot max out today (processor power) , may be not enough anymore in 1 year. Then again, people can say that you can sell and buy a new one, true, but many people also keep their iPad Pro for 2-3 years like me and if this AR and VR things go more spread, some serious power boost may be needed, dont you think?

Then again, it is all a theorical question as we don't even know how much of a performance boost would have the A14X against the A12x/A12Z.

It wouldn't be counted as a major upgrade because you would barely notice it, it will be noticeable only in the long run.

Even today's iPad can be used for 2-3 years without any issue, it is a really really powerful device, keep in mind that the iPad Pro is 5 times more powerful than the entry-level iPad which is already quite good.

I also don't think it will came without a cost if Apple add 5G and an A14X, it's gonna be a "Max" or "Plus" version of the iPad Pro and thus be a bit more expensive

All good thoughts however to give you a counter point: my first generation iPad Pro is still running well and I have yet to get to the limit of its hardware capabilities. With the current / new iPads I suspect the same will be the case for the next few years.

Not everyone will venture out into the AR world if it doesn’t add value to the life’s of the vast majority of the user base.

If it’s just a faster cpu in the new one that’s personal taste to call it a huge upgrade.

Because all it will be will be a faster chip. Will people notice it on a day to day basics? Most likely not. 5G in most markets isn’t going to be blazing fast for a while but certainly future proof if you like to use iPads on cellular.

Even 5G will be barely noticeable, knowing how fast we can go with 4G ...

5G really is more for very dense areas. T-Mobile, I normally get 1-3 Mbps on LTE and sometimes, that even dips into sub-1 Mbps.

If you get 1-3 Mbps with LTE I don't think you will get 5G soon
In very dense area I get 100+Mb without any problem

LTE speeds right now are way higher than the majority of home connection, and lot of person use a 4G modem as home modem because of this
In my option this is the real potential of 5G

Yes, I live in Toronto. In some areas the congestion is very heavy.

Thus, I'm not sure if I will buy now, and I am considering waiting for the 5G + A14X version. Truthfully though, the biggest upgrade for me would be to get something with better black levels than my iPad Pro 10.5", but that would mean waiting until 2021 for mini-LED. Furthermore, there's no guarantee it would come to the 11" model (which is the model I want), and there's also no guarantee it would be a huge upgrade. The potential with mini-LED is there, but real world results are another matter.

I often get <10 Mbps or even 1-3 Mbps with LTE in congested areas, but more importantly the latency really suffers and it becomes much less reliable. And yet, we already have 5G available here.

At home I get very good LTE speeds, but I live in a low density neighbourhood with zero congestion, and of course I don't need LTE at home anyway since I have WiFi on a wired Gigabit connection.

The real benefit of 5G is better management of congestion, with better latency. I couldn't care less about 5G in my home. The importance of 5G for me is everywhere else, outside my home.

The big drag of 5G here though at least with some carriers is that either you'll have to get a new higher priced plan, or you'll have to spend CAD$15 per month to "upgrade" your plan for 5G. Lame. On some plans they are offering 5G for "free" right now but that's only until 2021, when the new pricing structure kicks in. Get you hooked and then screw you over.

T-Mobile has already deployed 5G in my location.

Verizon has also deployed 5G in neighboring locations (downtown LA and Chinatown).

But isn't the congestion caused by the maximum bandwidth of the antenna rather than the wave length allocation ?
I was not aware of the better congestion management, it could be really cool if it works as advertised

I see a 25-35% cpu upgrade and a 40-60% GPU upgrade.

I thank you for your reply, i thought that may be newer apps would push the current ipads to the limits with more demanding graphics, but it was just a theory.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately my case is different than yours, i am using a 1st gen 12.9 iPad Pro, even tho in general for sketching it is still goodish ok, for example while using Artstudio Pro, it doesnt feel as snappy as before. Even in procreate it feels less snappy even tho it creates no problems while drawing which is the most important.

Than again, while using Affinity Photo or Shapr3d, i think that the my iPad Pro is starting to hit it's limit but then again, it is normal, it is a 4 years old device, it is even pretty good that i am able to still use those softwares still in such a good performance as a 4 years old computer isn't offering me same performance levels on the newest softwares. This is what makes me love the iPad Pro line up. And then again, i know that the 2018 models are hugely more powerful than the 1st gen iPad Pros.

I agree that not everyone will venture into the AR world, but i think that slowly AR will start to grow on everyone and every type of softwares, like may be car configurators, boats, games, and many more things that i can not even imagine :)

Because all it will be will be a faster chip. Will people notice it on a day to day basics? Most likely not. 5G in most markets isn’t going to be blazing fast for a while but certainly future proof if you like to use iPads on cellular.

Thank you for your reply, on the 5g part, i agree, especialy in the beginning.

Seeing how increasing RAM will help iPad longevity, but not really be a game changer for years to come and that the iPad Pro 4 is almost the same in power to the iPad Pro 3... I'm not worried about it becoming obsolete for 10+ years (to be honest.) My iPad One still works with everything except YouTube. The battery doesn't drain fast and the display has no light bleed or problems.
I honestly see the following life-span in terms of software working good and being good functioning devices... or just squeezing the heck out of them, lol.

Just MY OPINION, but I see iPads lasting like so (IF Apple doesn't change iPad OS to a much more intensive Desktop type OS)...

iPad Pro 1 (4GB RAM A9X) = Another 2-2½ Years
iPad Pro 2 (4GB RAM A10X) = Another 5-8 Years
iPad Pro 3 (4GB-6GB RAM A12X) = Another 8-11 Years
iPad Pro 4 (6GB RAM A12Z) = Another 8½-12 Years (6GB of RAM being the thing that gives a bit extra life.)

iPad 5 (2GB RAM A9) = Another 2-2½ Years
iPad 6 (2GB RAM A10) = Another 4-6½ Years
iPad 7 (3GB RAM A10) = Another 5½-6½ Years (again, the 3GB of RAM being the thing that gives a bit extra life.)

iPad Air 1 (1GB RAM A7) = Works still but a bit sluggish and can't update.
iPad Air 2 (2GB RAM A8X) = 1-1½ Years
iPad Air 3 (3GB RAM A12) = 7½-10½ Years (again, the 3GB of RAM being the thing that gives a bit extra life.)

iPad mini 4 (2GB RAM A8) = 1 Year-ish
iPad mini 5 (3GB RAM A12) = 7½-10½ Years (again, the 3GB of RAM being the thing that gives a bit extra life.)

All iPads before iPad 5, iPad Mini 4, and iPad Air 2 work with limited functionality but cannot update and are a bit slow.

Don't @ me. lol

IMO, the original iPad 1 was effectively useless 2-3 years after launch.

iPad 2 became painful to use about 4-5 years after launch.

All iPads before iPad 5, iPad Mini 4, and iPad Air 2 work with limited functionality but cannot update and are a bit slow.
I would say the iPad Air 2 is a bit slow but more than usable. iPad Air 1 is irritating though. iPad 7 is very decent.
