Yes they will come back. And then squared edges will come back. They won't come with anything new.

I like both the rounded and squared edges, but lean towards squared because it reminds me of my first Eye Phone (SE 2016). But all of my phones have been in protective cases - so it’s really irrelevant.

I like the squared edges more because it is more practical: I can put the iPhone somewhere upright and I can let it take a photo. Try that with rounded edges. At the moment I'm still on a XS but I will get the 14 this fall. Holding it in the hand I don't mind if it's squared or rounded.

i freaking hate squared edges ,very unergonomic and painfully sharp

allows for thinner bezels tho i believe ,and more importantly, more solid overall

just curious if you guys think it's likely to come back

i'd like to avoid buying a squared iphone for as long as possible

Apple had squarish corners with the iPhone 5s and added rounded corners with the iPhone 6, before bringing back the squared corners with the iPhone 12? So calculate the year gap between the 5s and the 12 and that might be the beat estimate possible. Granted, I wouldn’t say that is a good estimate, but probably the best anyone outside of Apple can make.

Anyway, as for the sharp corners, do you not use a case for your phone? Seems like using something like Apples leather would remove any of the sharpness.

Personally I like the corners. I find it easier and more comfortable to grip. I felt similarly frustrated when Apple brought out the rounded corners with the iPhone 6.

I doubt it.

Given that the design team reports to the CTO COO, I think we’ve entered an era at Apple where the design has to be fantastic yes, but it also has to be easy to manufacture, reliable etc.

Apple is no longer design lead, but more a good balance of form and function.

And given that this is the original Bauhaus maxim, it’s all the better for it.

(No disrespect to the amazing achievements of Jony Ive, but I think that he started getting bored and frustrated around the middle of the last decade or so and his later work started getting more design lead, arguably).

I've noticed that people who had the iPhone 4, 4S, 5 or 5S (myself included) tend to favor the flat edges. It was such a pleasant phone to hold (granted, those phones were much smaller than the current ones are today). I wasn't a fan when they switched to the rounded edges, and I love that they returned to this design. I imagine it'll prob last a couple more generations before they switch it up again.

Good post. I like the flat edges of my 13 because it reminds me of my first Eye Phone, a 2016 SE, which was a 5S chassis . . . . . However, I had an 8 Plus for 4 years with rounded edges, and liked that too.

Flat edges were golden when the overall phone sizes were small (4/5/se)... Not when phones have become 6.1" and the average hand just can't comfortably hold the width of it, with or without the case.

True — but I’m 6’5ā€ and don’t have average hands. My wife says I have orangutan arms lol. So the 6.1ā€ iPhone 13 squared off on the edges fits me fine. 😊

Sorry, I am in the opposite camp here. I had a XS and it was my least favorite iPhone out of everyone I’ve owned. I generally don’t use a case on my phone and I dropped that XS more than every other iPhone combined due to how slippery it was. The bar of soap jokes are very accurate!

I have a 12 Pro now and it’s perfect, easy to pickup, hold and use. I hope we see this design stick around long-term. I think the solid feel in the hand makes it easier to hold, I don’t have to squeeze it so tight like the rounded XS, but YMMV.
