It's not so much that I dislike flying, I just dislike the people that are seated next to me. The last time I flew I was stuck next to a barmy old codger who kept poking me with his elbow for 8 hours.

amen

i always get stuck next to people with body odor issues

Nope. I enjoy flying if the flight is comfortable. As in, Air Canada executive class.

But I'm never afraid of it.

I am afraid of, however, ventriliquist dummies. If I was on a flight full of ventriliquists and their f***ing dolls...

I have only flown twice. One was a scenic flight and the other was in a Glider, I guess that could be considered scenic too. No fear here.

I have a fear of heights... but I suspect (like most people afraid of heights) that it's more a fear of falling, than it is of heights. So that goes 100% for plane rides.

I have a fear of heights, but not of flying -- which is good thing, since I own an airplane (or it owns me, more like). Fortunately fear of heights and flying are not necessarily one-in-the-same.

I think fear of flying has to do with the anxiety of not being in control, of putting your fate in the hands of others. Fear of heights, for me at least, has to do with the perspective effect of looking down the side of the building or whatever it is I'm standing on, to the ground.

I took my first airplane flight when I was 5 months old.

I have flown at least once a year for the past 18 years.

So, no, I don't have a fear of flight. ;)

i like rollercoasters, so i like takeoff a lot :), I sometimes think about if something goes wrong or whatever, but i can surpress it:p i've never really felt i should yell "STOP THE PLANE" though.

I was about 6 months old the first time I flew, then again at 4 years, and yet again 8 years. Didn't fly again until I was in 8th grade, for a class trip to D.C.
The next year was a band trip to Ireland (****ING AWESOME), and then 2 more years later was France and Italy. Last August, I flew to Baltimore for Otakon.
Interestingly, both times I flew to Europe, I was (somewhat, and extremely indirectly) affected by a recent major airliner disaster. For the trip to Ireland, we couldn't book everyone (150 or so) on one flight, due to the TWA800 crash, so the seniors and some juniors flew from Newark into Dublin, with a stopover at Shannon, and everyone else went direct from Logan into Dublin.
My second trip to Europe was late June/early July 2002. (Not only did I spent July 4th on a train to Venice, I missed Bastille Day and the start of the TdF. I did get to listen to a GP on the radio though. Too bad it was in Italian.)

So anyways, no, I'm not afraid of flying. I love takeoff, especially when the pilot eases the yoke back, and you get pressed into your seat. It's even better because I like to learn forward. :D
My least favorite part (other than trying to muck around with the pressure in my head during the initial descent  ) is taxiing, ESPECIALLY at T.F.Green (PVD). Note to whoever takes care of the taxiways there: I know it's Rhode Island, but potholes and frost heaves on the taxiway should not be BIGGER than the ones one the road in front of the airport (and that road is pretty bad!) The last time I flew out of/into there, the taxiing was bumpier than the damn flight!

I looooove flying. It never occurred to me to get scared, really. I think I flew once when I was too small to remember, but the first time I remember flying was when I flew by myself up to Glasgow when I was about 13. It was just totally exciting and I loved it. After planes crashing into buildings and all that jazz, I started to be a bit more aware that it was very real and very high, but life's too short. If it was going to happen it would, and there's not a lot you can do about it. I'm far more scared in a car to be honest, it feels much more dangerous, although I'm rarely in a car and can't drive, so I'm maybe not as used to it as I could be.

I prefer short flights, as you get the exciting takeoff and landing stuff. My longest flight was 6 hours or so, and that started to drag a bit.

i enjoy flying. its relaxing.
i love driving too. its relaxing.
i don't fly enough and i drive too much.

I'm not at all fearful of flying, but the first few times I flew I suffered motion sickness. The more I fly the less that seems to bother me though.

Love it - I joined the RAF cadets at school just so I could go flying and do aerobatics - stall turns, barrel rolls and looping the loop. I've even 'steered' during a loop :D

I like the window since I love looking down on the world - I just wish that they'd add an extra screen to the Airmaps that they have on some flights that included a real live feed of what was going on below from a camera in the nose. Although I think someone said that Singapore Airlines was now doing this so hope it will spread.

And... it's always sunny at 30,000ft :D

Yes.... Though I have nevr flown, I don't have any intention to anytime soon. I know everyones says "It's much safer then driving", but at least with driving I have SOME control over my life and what happnes to me, what am I susposed to do 5 miles up in the air if the plane starts to crash???

You just put the oxygen mask on so that you get high and you won't remember a thing. :p

Every once in a while...

Take-off is generally enjoyable, landing less so, but all in all I am more bothered by the cramped space and noise on a plane than the actual flying itself. However, I can't STAND turbulence. My girlfriend and I just flew cross-country and encountered some unexpected turbulence. We were doing okay until the captain quickly came on and said "please fasten your seatbelts". The plane started shaking pretty hard. Then the captain came on again, and and said rather roughly "flight attendants, be seated!" The plane REALLY started shaking at that point; my girlfriend freaks out, and since I'm the boyfriend I have to act all calm but inside I'm thinking "I DONT WANT TO DIE!!"

Ya, most everyone seems to be fine with flying. The real question should be "Do you have fear of crashing?"
from "A Few Good Men"
Kaffee: "I get sick when I fly because I'm afraid of crashing into a large mountain, I don't think Dramamine'll help."

I've flown +50,000 miles a year for a couple of decades. It's the best way to go. IJ Reilly got it right when alluding to the trust issue.

I never did have a fear of flight until 9/11. Now I do. But it has progressively gotten better.

I have a story to share, not mine, but my best friend's. It all begins like this....

It was spring break and my friend's family had flown to New York with no problems at all. They had a great time seeing all the things like Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, etc. So the day they came back it was April 1st, April Fool's/Apple B-Day. They took their flight back and during the flight the main pilot yelling "WE'RE GOING DOWN!". April Fools..
