Except it's not just a phone.

That’s very true. It’s an amazing device.

I guess the point I’m making is that the price has slowly crept up over the years and it’s feeling kinda crazy now.

But sure. If we were all to divide the hours thst we spend on our phones as a monetary value, it would probably come out as one of the best value for money items that any of us own.

This is true, but then again - although the cost has crept up, the usefulness of a mobile phone in our lives has increased. When you compare the monthly cost of a mobile to other big monthly household bills, it doesn’t seem so crazy given hust how much time we spend using mobiles.

That said, I do think the iPhone X overstepped the mark on price.

Yeah, totally.

Up to the 5s, for me, the iPhone didn’t feel too different in price to the other mobiles that I’ve owned. I mean even the Nokia soap-bar phones were around £300 or so back in the day.

But with the 6, the price started to creep above £500 and as you say, the X at (essentially) £1k+ seems to start to feel excessive.

So why did I get my 7? I guess every iPhone upgrade I’d had felt like a big jump (3GS - 4s - 5s) and the SE didn’t feel like a big enough jump & I wasn’t too impressed with the speed of the 6 and the battery life of the 6s. The 7 seemed to fix both of these issues - and added waterproofing and a big big screen upgrade. So I talked myself into it! The payment plans definitely helped me here.

For now, I’ll hang onto my 7 until it dies or maybe even get the new SE if it’s good (I prefer the smaller phones).

I just can’t see what a new iPhone at £750+ is going to offer me that feels like a ‘must have’ in 2018. Excited for the iPhone in 2020 though! :D

Phones were pretty expensive back in the day too (and did way less too), it's just that most simply paid for them in the form of contracts where the subsidy was built into the price essentially.

I think part of the reason consumers are very adamant about smart phones, is because it ties them to the digital world around us and they were relying on their smart phones not just for communication, but as a means providing so many other features as well. That said, I think consumers are willing to spend more money sometimes on smart phones given how much usage they actually achieve out of it and how it benefits them on a daily basis. For me, my smart phone is crucial for me for both business and personal.
