In that case, I'm a hero.

I am a hero in the sense that I turned up to work this evening and fed a lot of customers, making sure none of them went hungry.
I am a hero in the sense that when my co-worker unknowingly spilt some oyster sauce, I cleaned it up to prevent an accident.
I am a hero in the sense that I locked the doors after closing up so no-one could walk in and steal stuff.

You get the picture.

I see what you mean. He is a hero for inventing the iPad to allow the eledery and handicapped to access the internet, He is a hero because he has helped education evolve by allowing for the iPad to be priced so low that public schools can afford it, ex. the local inner-city school has just has bought iPads for every student.
I do see.

a hero is doing what has to be done no matter what the cost to yourself even when you are afraid. Making a computer does not fit in that.

No, I don't view him as a hero. A brilliant and talented person, yes, but a hero no, not even close.

Hero far from it. Steve Jobs was a fairly sad little man. Greedy to the core and angry at everything.

Good marketer and visionanary for products but horrible as a person.

Not a hero. He was a great salesman though.

A hero, IMO, would be those who place their lives in danger to save others / selflessly help others ( i.e., mother Teresa ). A person going well above and beyond - ignoring their well being.

Hero, is the wrong word to use in the case of SJ. He certainly turned around Apple, added creativity to products, no doubt about that. Not a hero though.

Nope. He was amazing at what he did (making successful products and selling them for a stack of money) but that's not what a hero is.

Good to see that the majority says no. Nothing he has ever done could be used to consider him a hero. Visionary is about it and I thank him for my iPhone.

If you're talking about the way we use computers and carry media with us today, perhaps Hero isn't so wrong. It's on the extravagant end of the scale, but in that strict sense it might not be inexplicable to use.

In any other sense, heck no. He was amazing at what he did; but he was no saint, regardless of which side of the Apple aisle you're on.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (iPhone; Opera Mini/6.1.15738/26.1283; U; en) Presto/2.8.119 Version/10.54)

He was brilliant & he inspired/cajoled/fooled talented engineers & designers to achieve more than anyone expected. A great leader.

But he's not a hero, was never in business to help people, nor did he make great personal sacrifices for people , even those close to him. Never pretended to be a hero either.

he·ro   [heer-oh]
noun, plural -roes; for 5 also -ros.
1.
a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
2.
a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.
3.
the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc.

Sorry, SJ doesn't fit into any of those meanings of the word hero. Some soldiers are heroes, some people who are put into incredibly difficult positions are heroes, some people who are dealing with life changing issues each day are heroes.

SJ was not a hero, and if you think he was you probably need to re-evaluate your viewpoint on life and technology.
