2.2 was released on November 21, 2008. I think 3.2 is right around the corner. 3.1.2 was released 39 days ago.

What assumption are you making that would define the release schedule for software?

Signal strength needs a tweak as well as the annoying accessory not supported tho it was before 3.1.2 came along.

Well we all know Apple has to break the unlock hack again.

So yeah, I think 3.2 might be around the corner.

Either way... I hope 3.2 is the perfect OS for me, but I have a feeling that it will never reach 2.2.1-ness.

Guess I'll stay on 2.2.1 then... hehe.

Why don't you just stay on an iPod touch?...hehe.

Just get a 3Gs then and you'll be fine when new updates come out. :D

I didn't like the iPhone 3GS. I had one, but I returned it 3 times until just returning it completely. My iPhone 3G is perfect and I really don't mind staying on 2.2.1 because it works great for me.

It aint going to happen without a hardware upgrade.
Way more stuff added to the OS since the 2.1 and 2.2 days.

Way more stuff? Tell me how much more is running in the background on 3.1.2 compared to 2.2.1. Please... enlighten me. Most of the changes are app specific and do not run in the background.

I can't text on my iPod touch.

The iphone 3.0 has way more features than 2.0 and its a bigger and more memory intense operating system.
I dont know the exact running processes that loadup at startup and how much resources they take.
The 3.0 update had new native features not just app specific changes, if you dont know what those features are google them.

TheSpaz does not care about CC&P, to name one of the features. I don't know how anyone can not use it, since I use it all the time. So, that's one reason he's happy in the 2.2.1 dark ages.

I see.
From 2.2 to 3.1 theres over 40 different features including native app improvements and tweaks so obviously all this new functionality will take up system resources.
You cant have your cake and eat it too.
But since he's cool with 2.2.1 more power to him.
He's probably running windows 95 still at home :D

I'll help you out then.

Bluetooth Audio: Only running when you have it on
Landscape keyboard: Only while you're running the app in the foreground
Copy and Paste: I'll give you that one. I'm sure it doesn't use much memory though.
Push: Only when you have it on
Spotlight: Seems to only run in the background when you activate it. After a certain amount of time, it seems to stop itself.
Voice Memos: Only when you're running it or recording.

Like I said, there's really nothing in 3.0 that is using up any more resources than 2.2.1. What I think happened is that Apple optimized the graphics and general OS speed to perform better on the iPhone 3GS. They could have optimized it to run like 2.2.1, but they chose to favor the new device and leave the older devices laggy.

Care to explain why my perfectly functioning iPhone is in the "dark ages"? It runs the way I want it to and 3.0 doesn't. I'd say it's the "good old days".

Come on, this has been discussed ad nauseum. You care more about snappiness, which most people can't even see the difference. Most of us care about functionality, but you don't. So, your "good old days" are our "dark ages."

If it weren't for MMS I would go back to 2.2.1 no matter how difficult it would be. :(

It runs the way "I want it to". Case closed. I'm hoping that 3.2 is like 2.2.1, but I'm not holding my breath.

Apple has to either:

A) Release an iPhone I like.
B) Make 3.x tolerable on my older device.

... in order for me to update my software. For now, 2.2.1 is the winner.

Please explain your reasons for wanting to go back to 2.2.1?

By the way, I can't even use MMS anyways... even if I had it. I haven't got a data plan and I have all data being currently blocked.

it's not as simple as you think. When you add over 30 additions/improvements to a cellphone os then u have to expect some lag. Alot of these features have to be partially preloaded to the os before start. If not it would take alot longer to do things in general and each function would take even longer to open or complete.
But since you know it all alot better than Apple maybe you can write the next iPhone OS update For the 2G and 3G iPhones instead and have it run just like 2.2.1
Thanks:)

You know what... I might actually believe you if I hadn't used the original 3.0 betas that were actually pretty fast and 2.2.1-like, but as the 3GS got closer and closer to being announced, the betas slowed down and I started to wonder why. Then they announced the iPhone 3GS and 3.0 has been slow ever since.

So I don't think it's about the iPhone 3G not having enough memory or processing power to run 3.x... instead, Apple just shifted their focus to the iPhone 3GS and optimized it for the faster hardware. Maybe it ran TOO fast on the 3GS at first (such as the animations were too quick) and they had to slow it down a little bit and the iPhone 3G suffers from those changes.

Can't you just give it a rest, Spaz? We all know that you fetishize 2.2.1; you've talked our ears off about it. You aren't saying anything here that you haven't said a dozen times, and it's well past tiring.

By the way, I can't even use MMS anyways... even if I had it. I haven't got a data plan and I have all data being currently blocked.

I have a few reasons:

1) Landscape: I honestly could care less about landscape mode. I never use it and I dislike that when I set my iPhone down or put it in my pocket it rotates the screen. When I pick it up again it rotates back. Slightly irritating when I just need to tap out a quick reply. I know about the "Rotation Inhibitor" sbsettings toggle, but I refuse to add more than Cycorder and the MMS hack as the original iPhone cannot run Mobile Substrate extensions efficiently.

2) Speed: 2.2.1 (or even 1.1.4 for that matter!) was so FAST on my 2G! 3.0 just FEELS slow on the original iPhone.

3) Copy & Paste: I'm not a "power user" I don't like SMS forwards and I don't really copy and paste things from the internet and email them to friends (as in the iPhone OS 3.0 video). I also have a good memory and don't need to copy/paste things like phone numbers to friends if need be. Other than those things I can't really think of a good use for copy/paste for me.

I could sacrifice MMS but it would be heartbreaking. I have friends send me pics all the time of funny or interesting things they see during the day or pics from the weekend of moments I was too drunk to remember... ;)

IF anyone knows of a way back to 2.2.1 or god wiling, 1.1.4, PLEASE, PLEASE help me out! I've tried a few times and even with downgrading iTunes I still get error messages. :(

I think Apple have stopped signing SHSH requests, so 3.2 is probably around the corner.

Are you saying they've stopped signing 3.1 and 3.1.2? I really doubt that. How could they do that before 3.2 is released? What if someone needed to restore between now and the actual release? I wouldn't expect them to stop signing 3.1.2 until 3.2 is actually released. That's how it happened with 3.1.

really? i shouldn't upgrade out of 2.2.1 if i'm using 2G? i thought the 3.1.2 is superior...

I dont know, maybe Apple did pull something in order to have everyone get with the latest iphone hardware release.
I wouldnt put it past them.
You start messing around for a few minutes with a 3G and then pick up a 3GS you can tell the speed and power difference right away.
