We only know a few things that we can expect in iPhone OS 4.0

I have a feeling they might be skipping this update entirely and without MacWorld this year, we cannot really count on the February update that has come over the past few years.

The only things in the pipeline right now for Apple that is all but officially confirmed is:

1. Radio App for 3GS / 3G iPod Touch
2. Google Turn-By-Turn (Will this even come? With Google and Apple now competitors, can we even rely on this?)

There would be major new features that Apple would use to differentiate the fourth gen iPhone. We may not see these features until the summer.

I, of course, would love to have these features sooner.

This is the most boring thread I have ever read on any message board in 10 years of surfing forums. Wow.

What did you expect from such a thrilling title

No the title interests me. That's how I got here. All the mindless flaming and useless arguing of the merits of older OS versions does not. Geez. Just go with the firmware that works best for you! I thought this thread was going to have speculation about new features in the next version and when it will be out and instead I got 4 pages of posturing and crap. I'm going back to HoFo.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to go with the minority opinion, which is that we can't expect a 3.2 release any time soon.

My reason for saying this is that since the SDK and App Store (2.x+), Apple has never just surprised everyone with an X.Y release out of the blue. X.Y.Z maintenance/bug fix releases, sure, but anything more than a bug fix release has always been preceded by a beta program open to registered iPhone developers. Sometimes the beta period is short (such as the 2 weeks between the first beta of 2.1 and the final release), but two whole months went by between when 3.1 beta 1 was released and 3.1 final came out.

It is now exactly three weeks until the rumored January 27th Apple event. If they were going to release a 3.2 on that day, I think we would have seen the first beta seeded to developers by now.

That's not to say that there will never be a 3.2, but I will be almighty surprised if it comes out on January 27.

Yeah not holding my breath for a 3.2 ever appearing now. I would -love- for them to add an option to NOT rotate to landscape for email/sms/safari, but I'm sure they won't even do that in 4.0 so I'm not too bothered.

I see.
From 2.2 to 3.1 theres over 40 different features including native app improvements and tweaks so obviously all this new functionality will take up system resources.
You cant have your cake and eat it too.
But since he's cool with 2.2.1 more power to him.
He's probably running windows 95 still at home :D

Not to mention the hundreds of OS tweaks out there for a Jailbroken iPhone. Haptic Control, A2DP, Voice memos, backgrounding, CC&P, media server/streaming, iPod enhancement apps for lyrics, Wake on LAN capabilities, remote access and on and on and on, all these (most) require a 3G and if on a 3GS it's AMZING if you know how to install them and use them all properly. 2.2.1 is like the OS 8.1 compared to Snow Leopard. seriously, I think SOMEONE is in a bit of denial ;-)

but to each their own, I just can't imagine trying to justify that 2.2.1 is much better than a 3.1.2 stock OS not to mention the endless possibilities of a jailbroken 3.1.2. And the App Store apps are more and more requiring on 3.0+, anyone on 2.X is missing a LOT of VERY cool features, especially ona JB'n device. Install "shrink and Five columns springboard and five icon dock and get 20 apps on one screen! THAT alone to me was worth a jailbreak, not to mention all the themes. I'm running a Droid theme that is just amazing! And the Nexus One theme is VERY nice also, just needs a few more icons to it and it'll be superb. Just about there. My iPhone outperforms a stock one hands down and with a mophie juice pack battery life is not an issue, I get 1.5 days on a single charge. I Love the damn thing! sold my laptop and haven't turned back, I don't miss it at all, as my iPhone is more functional than a big bulky laptop. and it's in my pocket.

My 2 cents, it's all personal preference and I fault no one for that.

Cheers

To prevent this thread from derailing again... ;)

I should add that, even though I do not believe we will be seeing 3.2 (at least not without a beta program for it happening first), I could easily see Apple releasing a 3.1.3 release unannounced (maybe under the guise of fixing a couple of bugs, but mostly with the intent to patch up baseband firmware to prevent blacksn0w from working, as well as patch up the iBoot USB hole that allows redsn0w, blackra1n, and PwnageTool from jailbreaking 3.1.2 devices).

So, jailbreakers and unlockers, be forever vigilant, and remember to play defensively! :)

(okay, maybe even I went a little off-topic there...)
