Im wondering if Nokia had adopted android and im sure they would have been a massive success, then who would have adopted WP8 considering the fact that nobody buys HTC's windows phones. Would microsoft would have been forced to release a premium phone of their own?

I do think that the Lumia line of phones did help propel WP to its current [growing] marketshare. However, if Nokia went with Android then I think the company may have been better off. The few people who I know have Lumias say they'd love an Android phone with Nokia's hardware.

definitely, it's nokia who has brought the windows phone OS to the number 3. other vendors aren't even interested. but, if nokia had gone android, they would be dominating the android market.

I wonder why people assume that a Nokia Android phone would make them a money machine. You guys do realize that Samsung makes a majority of the money from Android, right?

People talk about how they love the build quality, but the HTC One hasn't been bringing in billions to HTC.

:|

But, yes, WP8 would have been screwed over if they didn't have Nokia (unless they were able to get HTC to actually try to make good WP8 devices, then maybe?)

Simple fact that android is preferred over windows so its simple mathematics that the phone would of done better given it being on a platform that more people prefer.

I would consider a Nokia again(n95,96 days) if it was on android and the same goes for blackberry, they would of done better if they tailored there skin on top of android.

Except the simple fact is that almost nobody else is really making money from Android if they're not named Samsung.

Why don't people understand this?

For the first quarter, global Android smartphone profits totaled $5.3 billion. Samsung captured a hefty 95 percent, or $5.1 billion, of that amount. Strategy Analytics senior analyst Woody Oh pinned Samsung's success on an "efficient supply chain, sleek products, and crisp marketing."

As in every other Android company made roughly .2 billion dollars profit between them.

yes, it'd be in pretty bad position if not dead, but, nokia should start making it's own UI, just what samsung, htc, etc are doing. everyone knows microsoft isn't that creative and quick, it'd be cool if nokia starts making it's own UI.

And Nokia would still cater to a better ecosystem and would help there sales.people are not buying the phone for its operative system, they are buying it for the phone and people that are heavily invested in android won't switch to windows phones for the same reason iOS users don't leave for windows phones.

It would only open up Nokia to more sales being on an android platform and yes Nokia is basically keeping windows mobile alive.

Do you honestly think blackberry wouldn't do better if they went with android? There Eco system and app market is complete **** compared to iOS and android

I don't believe anyone other than Samsung is doing well with Android. Why? Because nobody other than Samsung is doing well because of Android.

Why do people buy Samsung devices? That's the question that Nokia would have to discover. How could they differentiate themselves in a sea of Android? At least with WP they have a chance of being DIFFERENT.

Also, Windows Mobile is dead.

Man you are not getting the point.no one is saying they could compete with Samsung.I'm saying they would sell more if they were on the android platform from being able to get people to buy the phone that are already heavily invested in the android Eco system.

They can easily make the cell look exactly like it does now and still be on android.that is the fun about that platform as you can customize your phone to make it look the way you want it and Nokia could have made it look exactly the same and on android instead of wp8 sorry not windows mobile(same crap to me)

And why do you keep associating Samsung as android? Its using touchwize that looks nothing like a nexus device and is not android.android is an open platform is,nothing more and its not Samsung.they are just the best selling phone and it happens to use android as its os

You're not getting my point.

There's no proof that they would make any more profit than they are now with Android. There's NO PROOF of that. There's speculation, and that's all well and good. But to say that they would actually become wildly profitable in any way because of Android is a joke.

Very few are profitable because of Android.

Its easy for you to think the way you do because you use iOS but people on android won't look at the Nokia because of its os and yes it is holding it back and you can quote this for when Nokia actually ends its contract with wp8 and switches to android

I'll bet by mid 2014 you will see Nokia pushing android based phones.

Like they say.if you can't beat em join em

What people need to understand is NO ONE can compete with the Samsung Group. Literally everything is done in-house for Samsung. They don't have to order screens, they don't have to order processors, they don't have to order ram, they don't have to order shells, they don't have to order boards, they don't have to order anything.

Every other phone company must order something. Samsung doesn't.

Yes Windows Phone would've been royally screwed without Nokia. Thing is, Nokia would've been royally screwed without Microsoft. Microsoft still pays Nokia Billions to produce this stuff.

Nokia can't make an overlay to put on top of Windows Phone. Microsoft's guidelines preclude them from doing so. Microsoft wants a uniform experience on Windows Phone. I think this is part of why other OEM's show little interest in it, because there is little they can do to differentiate themselves from other Windows Phones.

I wish they'd gone the route of Samsung and HTC.

Make both Android AND WP8 devices. Rumors are that HTC is waiting for the next uodate for WP8 (Support for 1080 screens and Quad-Core) and they're simply going to put WP8 onto the HTC One instead of designing completely separate devices. That'd be a nice touch getting to choose the OS on your flagship phone. The Samsung Ativ is essentially a rebranded Galaxy.

Was probably the best thing for Nokia and Microsoft to do to ensure a place in the market. In honesty, my Lumia is probably the best phone I've ever had. Quality hardware and a solid little phone OS off MS. (Although it does need some major improvements in areas).

I use iOS on a tablet. Before I moved to the Lumia 520, I was using an Android phone. Congrats on assuming incorrectly.

Glad to see somebody sees that Nokia was in a bad position.

If Microsoft was unable to get another manufacturer to support Windows Phone as much as Nokia has they would probably be dead in the water, but Nokia benefits from Microsoft's support also. As far as Nokia and Android, the removable battery and SD card that so many like in the Samsung phones is not in any high end Lumia, so while Nokia could initially sell more phones if they went Android long term I don't think they could do any better than HTC is doing right now.

Yes, WP8 would have been dead. HTC and Sammy don't really care about Windows Phone at all. It made sense for them to go get an exclusive maker of Windows Phones, especially Nokia.

However, I still think Nokia sold their soul to the devil. I want a Lumia with Android. Nokia has the name recognition, build quality, and camera know-how to make a stand-out device.

Samsung would've killed Nokia if they went to Android. Just like they're pushing HTC to their first operating loss in years. Elop even mentioned awhile back the reason they didn't adopt Android was because they had fears a certain OEM would eventually dominate the platform.

Biggest loser in all this is HTC. Both Samsung and Nokia dominate their respective platforms. HTC has nowhere to go.

Samsung was no-where near as dominate a few years ago when Nokia made the choice to go to Windows Phone.

They announced the partnership around Feb 2011. At that point, the Galaxy line has just come out and the S2 was a few months off. Hell, the Captivate was notorious for hardware problems. It was junk.

There was ample time for Nokia to dominate if they wanted. They chose the wrong platform and Samsung's popularity skyrocketed with the S2.

Biggest loser in all this is HTC. Both Samsung and Nokia dominate their respective platforms. HTC has nowhere to go.
Like RIM, they have only themselves to blame. Poor decisions over and over again.

You have these Nokia Windows Phones that are just as locked down hardware and software wise as an iPhone. Most people would just assume to get an iPhone instead if they are both locked down. This is why WP hasn't really taken off .... IMHO.

Other than the camera I don't see what Nokia would have to offer as an android manufacturer over HTC or Samsung. I think the 920/928/925 series are nice phones, but I think the One has better feel in the hand and the S4 and Note 2 have expandable storage, removable battery and a physical home button. I could be totally wrong but I think a Nokia Android phone would be just as good as the competition but not better.
