I went caseless a long time ago, with a Samsung windows phone. I dropped it onto a rug over a hardwood floor one night and the screen splintered.

Now granted I think the 15 pro is maybe just a tiny bit tougher than that plastic and brittle glass old windows phone, but still. Can’t go without one since then.

During quiet times working or evenings I take it off at times. But as soon as I’m mobile even getting up to get a drink of water, back on it goes.

Been caseless for the better part of 10 years. Just take care of your phone, and treat it like what it is — a $1,000 object.

That’s too big of an ask for some people. But for me and many others, that’s enough to avoid destroying phones. I’ve only had one fall bad enough to crack a phone and it was because the phone slid out of my pants as I was standing up.

Just know, there’s always the risk of dropping and breaking it. It’s always there. But the feel in the hand and smaller footprint the other 99% of the time makes the trade off worth it.

Edit - If you hate cases but want scuff protection (probably not much drop protection), check these out. I own one:

So do you go caseless or use this thin case?

Over the years I’ve evolved from using heavy duty cases such as the OB Defender and UAG Monarch, to medium duty cases like the Phone Rebel and Caudabe Sheath, to recently using ultra slim cases like the Pitaka MagEZ and Benks Air. I’m currently using an Arc Pulse (which I love) on my 16PM, which is about as close to caseless as you can get. I’m not quite ready to go full caseless, but that final step is probably in my not-too-distant future.

Still going strong with my case-free iPhone 14 Pro, since day one. Still looks like new.

My wife on the other hand. She has to keep a case on hers. The minute she tried to go caseless, she dropped it and shattered the back glass. Got that repaired, put a case on it... decided to take it off one day...

Want to guess what happened? 🙂‍↕️

I bought a 15 Pro in natural white in the beginning of July, and I have been caseless since.
I don’t have a single scratch/mark on it.
I don’t “baby” it but I’m careful with it. Don’t throw in a bag with lots of stuff or a pocket with keys etc.
I also have Apple Care +.

I do however have a screen protector on it, but that’s because I hate scratches on the screen🙂

What I wanna know is how so many people gouge or smash their screen and/or drop their phones so often. Like if you work construction and are part of the industrial lubricant team, sure I can understand a wrecked phone, but, ehhhh

I’ve been going through a progression from protective cases like the Phone Rebel and Nomad Rugged, to thinner cases like the Apple Silicone and Caudabe, to super thin cases like the aramid Pitaka and Benks. I’m now using the Arc Pulse, which is perhaps the last step before going fully caseless.

It really is nice. An high tech version of the old bumper, and I’d like to try it. But it is incredibly expensive if you consider what it really is. The price is ridiculously high, especially here in EU.

I used my 13 Pro for 3 years caseless—honestly I wouldn’t do it again.

The screen was supremely scratched by the time I upgraded to the 16PM, and the stainless steel frame had a lot of nicks on it, especially on the corners.

Sure, if you’re super diligent and never set the phone down anywhere without wiping the surface down first, you’ll probably fare better—but I travel, I like the beach, and I don’t like treating things like they’re overly precious.

My 16PM is in the Apple Silicone case which I really like, and though I still don’t use a screen protector, the lip when placing the screen facedown has been beneficial.
I used my iPhone 5 for for 3.5 years - honestly, I'd do it again.

I used my iPhone 6 Plus for 7 months - honestly, I'd do it again.

I used my iPhone 6s Plus for 5 years - honestly, I'd do it again.

I used and am CURRENTLY using my iPhone 11 Pro Max for 3.5+ years - honestly, I WILL do it again.

None of my screens are/were scratched by the times I upgraded and the sides did not have any nicks on them, especially on the corners.

I am super-dilligent, I have a series of 'rules' for myself that are by now just natural habit for me. I set my phone down in designated spots and if I have to set it down on surfaces like tables at restaurants etc, I don't put it face down. If anything is going to 'scratch' it's going to be the back of my phone. Seriously, what is it with all you people who put your phones down face first?!!!!

I don't travel, I work from home and the most I get away from home is about 40 miles sometimes. I like it that way. And I don't treat things overprecious. But I'm not explaining to my wife how I broke a ~$1000 phone because I was careless. And I don't want to use cases.

The experience is often getting to buy a brand new phone sooner than you expect. ;)

You might get to experience new box opening & new box smell upwards of several times in a single year. 🎉

OP: meet Mr. Murphy. I think he's in law in some way. ;)
Since 2012 I have dropped a grand total of two phones that required replacement. Both times I was under the influence of a first gen antihistamine and subsequently not paying attention.

I do drop my phone, I've never said in this thread (and others) that I have not. But what you state has not been my experience.

My advice: ALWAYS USE A CASE.

Even if you think there are actually people who drop their phone “several times a day”, as few, if any, people ever do, then, of course, you'll declare that only THEY should use a case. But those who declare that about OTHERS are the very ones who, sooner or later, will drop their phone catastrophically and wish they had used a case! 😀

So, ALWAYS USE A CASE. 💯 👍🏽
Again, since 2012 with my first iPhone I have dropped a grand total of two phone sufficiently to merit replacement.

I will not heed your advice.

Pretty sure I wasn't replying to a post by you but just sharing a joke about a negative "experience" of going caseless with phones. There are very real risks of drops and they are pretty fragile "naked." If I was spending $1000+ on ANY phone, I'd also be buying a "shockproof" case for it. I think I recall dropping my phone alternative- cellular Minis- maybe 1 time in 12+ years now... but glad it was in a shock-proof case. I suspect if it was not, I would have owned more than 2 iPad Mini's over those 12 years.

While I've been quite lucky- like you- not everyone is as lucky. For stories of how "I've never dropped my iDevice ever", there are other stories of "I can't seem to get by even 6 months without it hitting the floor once." The flip from lucky to unlucky is only an unfortunate drop away. Caveat Emptor... or else.

Unfortunately, when it comes to minimizing drops, we are not all you... or me. The poll results seem to tell the story from many owner's perspectives.

Yeah, the Arc is pricey, but from my perspective, not terribly so. It’s machined from a solid block of 7000 series aluminum, then polished to a high gloss, which if you consider the price of other objects and devices constructed in the same manner (camera accessories, motorcycle parts, jewelry, etc.), the price seems within reason. And it seems well worth the price when compared to molded plastic cases in the same price range from companies like Mous and Otterbox. Now those seem like a total ripoff to me.

Nooo. Going case less wouldn't work for me, I drop my iPhone 16 Pro Max far too often, it just wouldn't survive intact. I have kids too and I am sure any parent out there would relate that you simply couldn't trust them not to break things.
…annnd we've had that discussion before about kids and stuff and personal space. ;)

If my kids broke anything, it was their own stuff, not mine or my wife's.

I’m too much of a klutz to go caseless. And in a home of hardwood flooring, I’d be breaking the phone as least once a week.
This is me. A few weeks ago, I was taking my phone out of my pocket, and somehow managed to throw it as I did so. Plus, how would I have a built in stand?

I currently alternate between the Apple silicon case and Spigen Ultra Hybrid in my iPhone 16 PM. Both great cases.

In past phones I have used Caudabe Sheath and Smartish Gripmunk.

I recommend all 4.

Whomever you might have been replying to in whatever thread, it seems the mods have merged that thread into the main stickied one. So, I was simply responding in here. It seems I have entirely missed whatever thread it was before it got merged in to this one.

But yes I agree that drops are a real risk and that phones are expensive. That's why my series of rules for myself protects me. That's just for myself, I enforce those rules only on myself. Because I want to go caseless and not have to explain replacing a phone to my wife.

I fully agree. I’m very cautious with my devices, but in the last 5/6 years I dropped my iPhone a couple times anyway. Last time it was my three days old iPhone 16 PM, held alone in the pocket as always. I used it, put it back in the pocket and while I was taking my hand out of the pocket it somehow got stuck in the sleeve (I was wearing a suite with Velcro at the end of the sleeve) and I basically threw it out, into the concrete. It was undamaged thanks to the apple silicon (undamaged too) I was using. Not sure it would have survived without any scuffs naked.
It was purely bad luck, and it won’t happen again if I’d do the same move 10 times in a row. But sometimes it just happens…

I never paid more than 39€ for an Otterbox. Slightly more for an Apple cover. It is a ripoff, don’t get me wrong, but 80€ for a cover (arc price in Europe) is hard to swallow
