Do you use your iPhone as your primary iPod device??

Yeah, definitely. Listen to music around the clock (although i never need more then 8 gigs cuz i don't keep movies on it), and wanted the option to check the internet or text someone while listening to something all on the same device.

For me, it's all about that convergence. My 3G(never mind the 3GS, lol) does the majority of the things it does, to a such stellar quality, that separate devices, are not needed.

Hi,

I'm thinking about exchanging my 16GB for the 32GB 3GS, but I'm up in the air about doing so...

Currently, I stream all my music using "Simplify Media 2" and I use "Pandora"; which is great because it saves hard drive space. However, I'm thinking if I should use my iPhone as my primary iPod device too?? Do you guys use your iPhone as your primary iPod device?? Does it kill the iPhone's battery life in the long run??

A pro I see of using the iPhone as both is I will only have to carry one piece of equipment; which is great!! But a con I see is that if I stream using the 16GB 3GS my network will be used and I'm guessing "streaming" shortens the iPhone's battery life in the long run than actually having the songs on the hard drive.

And if I get the 32GB I will be able to copy my whole song library on the iPhone and play all my songs locally; which I think will help extend the iPhone's battery life in the long run.

Thank you,

im actually looking into doing the same...but theres no direct way to upgrade to a 32g from a 16g aside from upgrading your AT&T contract i want to avoid that

how do you plan to upgrade if you do so

I still have my iPods, but they largely gather dust except for the largest one which lives in my car connected to power and the sound system. Even at the gym, or when cycling (professional driver on a closed course--do not try this at home) I use only the iPhone and a Bluetooth headset. The sound is great and even with 16G, I can carry all the music and podcasts I want. And in the unlikely event that I ever run out, there is always Pandora, XM, and other audio content apps. Once a week or so I refresh the playlists and update the podcasts. It is helpful to be in situations where you can recharge the iPhone frequently, and I have chargers and stands plugged in and at the ready in most places I am likely to alight, but if you spend a lot of time off the grid, battery capacity could be a reason to carry an iPod.

Let me suggest you spend a couple of weeks with only the iPhone and then see how much you miss having an iPod at hand.

I'm actually still under my 30 days; so switching to 32GB won't be a problem...

Course I use it for music. It's my only (working) iPod. In fact, that's why I got an iPhone and not an iPod Touch - the one-device-for-everything factor :)

Of course. I have the 32GB 3GS and I don't even use half of it.

I don't have an iPod or anything else.

Anyone who says the iPhone doesn't have enough storage space is either a certifiable packrat, extremely disorganized/inefficient or just plain lazy.

There are plenty of ways to listen to music over the internet if you happen to not be carrying a particular song on a particular day.

I like Imeem a lot...

I find it drains the battery too much, and I'm fairly wary of keeping the battery in decent condition so I try to avoid charging too much. However, I do use it here and there and find myself using/carrying my ipod much less. OP, maybe you could get a shuffle or something to bridge the gap, if you end up feeling there is a gap at all. :)

Yep, one of the key features of the iPhone is it's built-In iPod. I use mine to stream music with SHOUTcast at night and use it at the gym to listen to my music.

Since getting the iphone, my ipod has become an alarm clock. It never leaves my bedroom. If it weren't for getting one of those ipod alarm clocks for xmas, my ipod would get no use.

I recently maxed out my 4GB nano (the 3rd gen, it's filled with music though), and since I'm planning on getting an iPhone soon, I'm probably gonna go with the 16GB. If I have to have it for two years, I'd rather be sure that I can fit everything and more on.

I'll probably use it as my main iPod, but store 750 or so of my favorite songs on the Nano so I don't waste the iPhone battery on long car trips.

Basically it is. It stays with me and I use it in the office. However I keep my 120gb hooked up to my stereo in the car. So I never use the iphone there.

This.

My iPhone goes everywhere with me but I keep my 20GB iPod in my car. I'd probably retire it but the transmitter I bought with the iPod is designed to hold it. The phone is a little too wide to fit in the slider so I have to use something to prop it up. Shouldn't be a problem for long though because I'm planning on putting a touch screen head unit with the iPod adapter in my car soon.

That was my original plan but I realized I don't like the iPod app on the iPhone and just the size of it compared to my nano, which also has much better sound quality. That I really can't get over.

My iPhone is not my main iPod. I have 30GB iPod video that I use primarily in the car. However, my iPhone serves as a back-up in case I forget my iPod at home.

The way I use my iPod during work hours doesn't suit the iPhone.

I leave it plugged into external speakers playing music all day. I'm popping in and out my office all the time and need my phone with me. I also like having all of my music with me so the iPhone isn't big enough.

It's great if just carrying the iPhone works for you but I still need 2 devices for my needs.

Same here. I'm in and out of my office so much, it'd be a pain to have to keep unplugging my iPhone from my speakers, so I still use my nano for music.

Plus, my nano is much more manageable when I'm on the treadmill.

I answered yes, but I'm not happy about it. I got the 32gb iPhone so I could hold most of my music/podcasts and not have to carry both devices. I don't like the iphone (ipod) interface near as much as my ipod. I hate the fact there is no easy way to forward in a song/podcast. Sure you can move the slider (full or 1/2 speed), but it's a PIA while your driving.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Ofcourse, that's the point of the iPhone, phone And a media player :)

Does it not bother anybody else that you have to squint to read the artist/song title on the iPhone/iPod Touch screen? I tried using my phone in my car for a while but this really bothers me.

It seems they're more worried about it being pretty with the gigantic album art in the middle than they are about it being functional.

I decided to do just that when I upgraded to the 3GS. I found it silly to carry a nano around as well.

Yes, my iPhone is my main (and only iPod). That being said i would like to get a Nano eventually just because I kinda miss the click wheel.
