I tried a Samsung OLED tablet at the store and the color shift with viewing angle change was quite distracting to me.

For web browsing, I’d prefer LCD. For watching video, especially movies and TV, OLED is much better.

Thing one - Pro Motion, as already mentioned, is one of the best features of the current iPad and would be missed. As much as I love my iPhone X deep blacks, I will admit the promotion on the iPad looks down right futuristic.

Thing two - Price. I can not even imagine how justified Apple would feel in raising prices for an OLED iPad. I feel like the base price would be ludicrous.

Thing three - I wonder if OLED is even a good technology for an iPad, which theoretically has longer work sessions than an iPhone and risks screen burn in.

Finally, thing four - Not that they will, but Apple could probably wait until 2020 to even think about updating this thing, and as mentioned above, micro LED may be readily available by then, which would theoretically best all current technology. I expect at least a speed bump and possible color options next year sometime, but generally speaking I don’t think we’ll see a major update until there’s a new screen technology behind the glass. (Also who knows what software advances iOS13 will bring.)

It might the old person in me, but all this talk about better displays brings down the advances in actual performance. I remember back in the early computing days when we all oh and awe at an 8-bit sprite dancing around a rather boring screen. I personally think today's LCD screen are very good and I rather have Apple concentrate on performance of the iPad Pro than trying to squeeze out the screen itself. However, like I already mention I"m old school.

I think you are confused, he’s saying a $100 extra, not a $100 for the iPad total, and it certainly wouldn’t be a $1000 on top of the current price.

And can people please explain why everyone here is thinking you can’t have a 120Hz OLED display when current LG OLED 4K TV’s are capable of this through an app, are you all confusing what HDMI is capable of right now?

You haven’t watched much dark content or stuff with black borders it seems as the iPads are absolutely awful for blacks. iPhone X and LG C8 OLED TV owner and still have my 2015 12.9 inch iPad Pro for comparison and that is slightly better in terms of blacks but not as bright as the new 11 inch.

Not my experience.

I'm very satisfied with the picture quality of the new iPad. Ofcourse it's not completely on par with OLED, it's still LCD. But for being a LCD screen, it's doing a tremendous job.

Keep in mind that color accuracy and refresh rate are much more important on this device. An iPad pro isn't tailored around media-consumption.

Besides, if people really want an OLED screen on the iPad pro, then count on paying an even higher price tag.

Colour accuracy? The damn screens are yellow out of the box once again, there’s nothing accurate about that, I once again have to use the colour filter in Display Accomodations in Settings to filter out all the yellow I can to get white whites but that’s not a perfect way to fix it. My iPhone X and my new iPad Pro are the yellowest screens I’ve ever had and that’s not colour accurate at all. It’s years overdue for Apple to give us proper colour controls like a monitor has.

And as for blacks, I’ve seen plenty of LCD screens that have much better blacks too so saying it’s doing a tremendous job makes no sense, the only thing it has over my older iPad is it’s brighter.

Actually I do not - would rather have better LCD power usage time over a stark-black background OLED that sucks power quicker.

And besides - iPads have already become wayyyyy overpriced, especially when you consider that they are just big iPhones (iOS functionality desperately needs to be re-engineered to make better use of a big screen).

OLED doesn’t work that way. Black on OLED isn’t lit unlike LCD, so OLED is more power efficient.

There are no IPS LCD displays with significantly better contrast ratio than the iPad Pro, unless they have a backlight with some sort of localized dimming.

The one point I will say in support of OLED (and as said above i’m Mostly a fan of LCD for it) is that I find the screen not quite bright enough currently.

The only device where I want OLED is my TV.;)

My Sony OLED TV, iPhone X, Alienware R13 and my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 beg to differ. OLED is incredible across all those platforms!

no, never... I'll take LCD Liquid Retina, it may not get the black levels but no image retention is awesome.

Kallum.

Really???

OLED all day. Samsung figured it out with the TAB S3 and S4. AMOLED

As an owner of an iPhone XS and LG OLED tv, I’m worried that the new iPad LCD displays will be disappointing. Those of you that have the new iPad, how would you rate the display?

It is a really good display with accurate colors. If I view it during the day or under room lights, it's very close to my iPhone X, however, when it's night and I turn off the lights, you can see a really big difference due to much deeper blacks. This is why people like OLED TVs for "dark room viewing".

However, it's not as simple as just putting an OLED on an iPad. First of all, OLEDs have a pentile arrangement which makes the screen lower res looking for the same resolution (if the resolution remained unchanged, the screen would actually look lower res than LCD, this is why iPhone X/XS have a larger ppi than other iPhones). Second, OLEDs can suffer from burn in when you keep the same static content on for a long time. This is not a big issue on phones, however, iPads are often used as computers, having the same app open for a long time (say, if you're editing a photo in Affinity or writing something in Pages for hours) which can cause image retention - and even permanent burn in after a while. Apple does tricks to mitigate this, and one day they may switch to OLEDs on iPads, but, for now, a LCD is probably the better option.

So, in short: iPad Pro has an amazing screen. Based on many reviews, it is one of the most accurate screens you can buy, it has beautiful colors and, of course, True Tone and ProMotion. However, in a dark room, nothing beats an OLED.

I would trade pro-motion for an 12.9” OLED display.

Perhaps, but there would be other downsides to going OLED on a laptop-like usage cases. If iPad was just for movies and games, maybe. See my post above. Also, I do believe Pro Motion is possible on an OLED as well, it's not the reason why iPads are still LCD.

But it's not really better, is it? I mean, better for what? Movies? Sure. Photo editing? Nope.

It may look more flashy, but iPad Pro has a much more accurate display than the Tab S4 AMOLED, it is also resistant to image retention and burn in for serious work. There is a reason why OLED is used for media consumption devices and not for professional devices and computer screens. And this is coming from someone who LOVES his LG C7 OLED TV and iPhone X screens.

Did you join MR just to say how much you love OLED?
I'll take 120hz ProMotion over deeper blacks every time. Enjoy your not Apple electronics?... lol ;)

Yea right. No it’s because of the news today. I’m excited about it. Been waiting forever for apple to bridge the gap between OLED TVs and Phones with OLED tech on the MBP
