for 150-200, i would grab one also. most on bay seem to be in the 350-400 range. i could still get one of those, and an earlier M as well.

Keep an eye on local (FB/CL) -- At $150-200 the 15" 2015 are tremendous value for what they offer, especially once you slap an NVMe stick in there

Battery replacement is also really easy if need be with a kit from Amazon

my new ssd blade costs more that that!

One thing I will say that is not good with the 2015 laptops is "external monitor usage"

I do none of that with mine, however

Agreed. My Early 2015 13" MBP was great until about two years ago. Now as I have a M1 Mac mini and a M3 MBA, I don't use the old machine very often, especially not for serious tasks (and that includes writing a document in MS Word).
If on budget, I would recommend a refurbished M1 MBA. That is, unless one uses older software that doesn't work wwll with Apple silicon.
that comment is starting too worry me, esp. since all off my documents have been created on this 2011 Pro.

"Those new Core 2 MacBooks are super overrated. What you really need is an PowerBook G3!

It's slower, less capable, doesn't get software updates etc., but it has a media bay that accepts a floppy drive! Plus, it runs all your existing PowerPC software natively. The Intel machines might run the old software faster under translation, but it just FEELS better to run it native, right?"

Yep. I was a strong advocate of the 2015 and earlier machines until Apple finally relented and killed the butterfly keyboard. The problem is that even if you find a 2016 that is fully loaded, it’s going to run more slowly than a 2015, have the stage lighting problem, and have the atrocious keyboard.
I still have my midrange 2016 15" MBP, though my daily driver is my 2021 M1 Max 14". The 2016 still works fine, doesn't have any of the issues you mentioned. Probably would run better if I rolled it back to 10.13 instead of 10.15, but Catalina is not too bad either. The Intel chip is nice for gaming, I use PlayOnMac to play a lot of great older Windows games on it without having to boot into Windows. I'm still trying to figure out how to run the same games on my newer MBP. It's great for everything else, but gaming is still a work in progress for non-AS-native games.

jumped on OWC. looks like a 2015 15" w/1 tb, 16gb memory in excellent used condition would be about $500.
considering the M1 series as well. don't see any on the Apple refurb store, but did read good reviews.

Not necessarily but dependent on your budget. A 2020 MacBook Air M1 will service your described computing needs but will probably cost several hundred more than 9-yr old 2015 MBP, which will service your computing needs as well, with the caveat it no longer receives OS or security updates. If your budget is $1K US or more, don’t even consider an Intel Mac.
I don’t have a 2015 MBP, so I can’t personally confirm this, but:

I think there was a security update on May 13, 2024 that would have been supported on a 2015 MBP running macOS Monterey.

macOS Monterey 12.7.5

I could be mistaken though. But I think it’s still receiving security updates from time to time.

If you’re so bitter about Apple’s computers,
Have I ever said that I hated the computers? No. That's your straw-man fallacy.

I hate what Apple has done to them.

I also hate that they're a spy agency.
why are you hanging around on this forum and posting repeatedly?
Every reader who decides to no longer give the spy agency more money to spy on them in exchange for artificial obsolescence hardware brightens my day. Why are you hanging around on this forum defending it?
Seems as though there would be better uses for your time.
(Paraphrasing Louis Rossmann: KissAppleButt.com is over there; this is the autistic nerd section.

I shall hazard a guess that is was about a year after Catalina was installed. (IME it takes a little while for APFS to snarl itself into a knot.)

Because Word is a bloated sow now. <warning: boomer lament incoming> God I miss ClarisWorks.

Well, there's a lot of that. Actually, most of it, that doesn't run at all on it.

As someone who lived through those days, I am here to tell you: nobody, anywhere, across the fruity plains, unless they were a vender toutboy or access-media shill, ever described PowerBooks as fast, running any version of the OS. Holy smokes those things were turds, outclassed in every way by sleek, thin WindowsME laptops with gorgeous iridescent turquoise lids (eh, I may need a moment here). We used them because it was all we had. They were heavy, sluggish, and usually broken. The end-of-era Titanium G4s approached...adequate.

Purge the Safari/Mail/iCloud ecosystem, and you won't need "security updates" because your stuff is no longer on Apple's NSA servers being a fat target.

Buy it. You shouldn't be looking at anything over £$200 for a 2015 Macbook Pro, a cheap enough price to take a punt at. If you don't like it you can always keep it as a spare, hack it to pieces or give it to a dependent.

It doesn’t cut it and you should be ashamed for even thinking it does. According to Apples websites this laptop is incapable and you should go straight to the Apple Store and buy the latest MacBook with Apple silicon.

The laptop is outdated, outgunned and frankly an embarrassment. Don’t even take it to Apple Store for recycling, they will laugh at you for having an almost 10 year old laptop.

😜

But on the other hand. You could probably still use it for most regular consumer tasks and have years of life left in it.

It depends on your needs and what you’re willing to do in terms of software running on it.

I only just upgraded mine and only because it dropped it and was banged up but it did work.

Aside from the latest OS which never really bothered me the only thing I couldn't do was play 4k video. other than that it could do all usual basic tasks of running office and photos etc.

My 2015 15" MBP is damn near perfect aside from the screen delaminating which was one of the only major issues with this line. I put a new battery in it and rarely use it so it retains a low cycle count.

However my M1 MBA runs circles around it performance wise and obviously weight, thinness, portability. The M1 MBA is flat out a far superior machine probably even a base one will smoke a 2015 15". There's really no comparison. My M1 runs Sonoma very well while my 2015 caps out at Monterey. The M1 will continue to get updates for years more as well.

I am more than likely "retiring" my 2015 15" MBP now that I've found its replacement in my 15" M2 MBA. By retire I mean put it away in my closet for a while until I can think of something else to do with it. It still runs decently well and all but I just don't have much of a use for it anymore... Sad. It really was a special computer for its time but the clock has finally run out.

lity. The M1 MBA is flat out a far superior machine

Except…”the screen”
The screen is obviously larger, but also looks better on the 2015 15”, at least to my eyes

The size and quality of the screen are a key reason I continue to use and enjoy mine so much.

I’ve had it side-by-side with brand new 15 inch Apple Silicon MBAs and the screen seemed identical save for no notch (I prefer no notch anyhow)

Wow, that’s some amazing luck! My wife’s 2016 went through 2 keyboard replacements, the screen lighting problem, and dead usb ports. It rarely left her desk.

OK, it has two ports only, but then, they are both Thunderbolt 3 (40Gb/s, up to 6GB/s), and USB 3 (20Gb/s, up to 3GB/s) appx. Do you have lots of devices to plug in? If s(o, you'll have lots of cables anyway, and a hub would maybe even help tidy things up.
not necessarily at the same time, but too many (ports) is better than too few. on my 2011 i use (on occasion): superdrive, firewire, ethernet, usb-a, sd, thunderbolt/minidisplayport.

OK. But do you carry lots of devices with you when you use the laptop 'on the road'? My point is that a hub can actually help tidy things up, if you have all your devices connected to a hub, it's a matter of inserting one plug when you come home and use the mac on your desk. All devices and displays connect.
