If I tap on a video it plays full screen just like it always has. The only difference I see is that it loops now instead of playing once and stopping at the end - big deal, swipe down and it closes.
Exactly…idk how this is anything but a welcome change for the majority

I actually don't mind it. At first it's weird, but then you realize you can customize the layout (such as bringing my favorites folder to the top) and it's not bad now. I agree it was confusing before between the "Recents" and the All photos tab, and now you can easily sort by date, which was an annoyance with the previous "Recents" folder.

One annoyance is when editing photos quickly, there is now a delay between going through the adjustment settings. Difficult to describe.

Change is always difficult and this is easily the biggest overhaul to the Photos app since iOS.

I really dont know why everyone is making such a big deal about this. You can make it look and feel almost exactly the same as it was in iOS 17. Search is better, UI is cleaner and when AI comes it’ll get even better.

Hahaha. There’s a huge gap in that almost. Especially when Recents is one of those almosts. Doesn’t matter what fluff you add to an app if you can’t get the core functionality right. They’ve literally removed that piece of functionality, and none of the things they’ve added or any prefs fiddling can bring it back.

When I open the Photos app, all my most recent photos are right there at the bottom of the "Photos" section. Directly below that I have "Recent Days", which filters them by the days they were taken.

I'm not seeing any functionality removed. I've always worked out of my Camera Roll, or whatever Apple called it in previous versions of the app, and the functionality was exactly the same - my most recent photos were always right at the end of that section.

You really can't. I can't make it open to the Albums view when I open the app. My shortcuts for organizing photos no longer works (No "recents" album to sift through anymore).

I'm happy that it works for your flow, genuinely - I can't imagine Apple made this change for no reason whatsoever. But it also prevents me from viewing and organizing my photos and videos how I prefer to, I'm sure you can understand that different people interact with software differently.

I really wish Apple had approached a core software experience like this with more caution.

Continuous video playback is not a bug it’s a feature. It’s always been super annoying to have to bring up the giant nav bar to replay a video and show someone then have to tap it away again. Video has always been a mess in the photos app but this is definitely not a bug
I agree continuous video playback is desired, but it shouldn’t be the default and only option and that is a bug. In Music app, you have control on the playback modes, there could be a UI option to choose the default video playback mode in the photos app.

Recents is the first thing I see when I open my photos app. I changed my sorting order in my library. I might be confusing what you’re talking about with something else though. Hopefully they rework the app in the future so it works better for everyone.

I guess it just was never an issue for me. I like opening the app to my most recent photos and looking at all of my albums is just 1 click away so it’s not a big deal for me personally. I get what you’re saying though. Hopefully they rework the app in the future so it works better for more people.

I’m a little confused by the above comments because the photos app already only moves photos into albums without copying them - that’s how it’s always worked and that hasn’t changed in iOS 18

I think some people are just confused about the point that if you put a photo into an album, it still shows up in the album where all photos are shown. I don't know the english name for that one, sorry. In Germany it's "Zuletzt".

People may think that now this photo is on the phone twice. But the mentioned "Zuletzt" - album has all of the photos in it, and if you put one of them in an extra album you don't actually copy the photo but you really just put a link of it into that new album. Otherwise it would use up way too much storage.

I think this confuses a lot of people, but once they understand how it works it's a very smart solution, obviously.

No, it doesn't move them into albums. It creates a "link" - the originals still remain in the main photo roll.
But that's how such Libraries work in general, and I like that.

Because you can have the same image in different Albums without to occupy the space multiple times.

One really good feature, in my opinion, that was added is that the metadata screen now shows any Albums that photo is in. I’ve wanted this for years. 🥳

I did submit this as a feature request to Apple years ago so I’m taking full credit for this. 🤭🤪

Can you let me know how to move pictures out of the Recents album into a different album?

I am not confused about the underlying implementation. I know there is only a single copy and the "copying" is merely adding a link to the same pictures.

That said this is a distinction without a purpose. To my knowledge I am unable to move a file out of the Recents album into another album. The only thing I can do is copy (via a new link to the same picture) to a different album. This behavior might be expected if the Recents album were name something like All.

It's not too bad, but still a hot mess to learn. One particular thing i despise is when I want to return to an album from an open photo I have to stretch my thumb all the up to click on a tiny little x or use two fingers to shrink the screen back to the album. Before, a small album window appeared next the photos on the bottom - an easier reach for me. First world problems.

You can’t….recents a just a sorting method. It’s never been an option to move anything out of there aside from deleting it or adding to an album. Think of it as your master library.

And that's a problem. There's no reason you can't move something out of the Recents album. It essentially renders the creation of other albums pointless.

Idk what the problem is. Recents is a sorting method for your master library. If it bugs you then just hide it. Because it’s how 99 percent of people scroll through their photos.

Perhaps I am missing something but Recents is where all the pictures I take end up. Is there another Album where pictures I take end up and which allows me to move them to other albums? If so that would great.

Most likely because that's where pictures end up and there's no point in creating different albums since you can't move them out of it. That's what I find myself doing but that's not what I want to do.

MacOS has smart albums.

I have one which shows any photo not in an album. It's what I open Photos to, and I don't use "Recents" any more.

I wish iOS had the same.
