I almost exclusively use it in landscape mode. It is easier to hold and I feel stuff just looks more natural in landscape: webpages, movies etc.

Thoughts?

OP, do you have an iPad mini?

I'm guessing a person's preferred orientation depends on their iPad's form factor (original 1-4, vs Air, vs Mini) and what they do with it.

For example: I mostly read or browse on my i4 in portrait. The i4 portrait screen is wide enough for readable text. Using portrait means I scroll less.

OTOH, I rarely browse on my comparatively "small-screened" iPhone 6. When I do, I flip to landscape for bigger text.

I have a first gen iPad Air and the iPad mini 2. For whatever reason I use both mostly in landscape mode. However I see that I might actually be in the minority here. Again like someone said, it might be the case that I am using that makes me use it mostly in landscape mode.

Looks like many people here preferring portrait mode.

I am still wondering why the lack of portrait-stand cases for iPad. Origami cases are lifesaver.

I have an ipad 3, and I most often use it in portrait. It's an older ipad, so most often I'm just using it for Safari (cursing its lack of RAM), email, ebooks, and to control my appleTV.

It's not the sort of device that imposes an aspect of ratio on the user....

Most websites work best in portrait, especially articles. You just see more of the page at once in many cases.

If anything, I feel like the iPad was meant to be a portrait-first device, because:

- Tablet form factor is primarily meant to be held and I feel like a rectangle is more comfortable to hold in portrait--slightly so when holding with two hands but definitely so when holding with one hand because landscape causes the iPad's center of mass/gravity to be farther away from the hand.
- 4:3 is the best aspect ratio for a portrait device.
- Almost all paper documents/letters/books/magazines/etc--basically all analogue reading is done in portrait, I'm sure for a reason, and people read a lot on iPads.
- Also that's mainly how steve jobs demonstrated using it and he's the one who's responsible for making it. :D

But of course it's meant to be both. Landscape is better for:
- videos
- wide images and documents
- using on a stand

What the heck is an i4??
Your post makes my head hurt.

Only time I use landscape is for Netflix I think.
Most of my use is with notability and the pencil and it just feels more natural in portrait mode I guess.

I used to exclusively use my iPad in landscape. Now however, portrait all the way unless watching content or connected to ASK.

My 10.5 is almost exclusively in portrait apart from media consumption and creative editing. My 12.9 though is used almost exclusively in landscape though due to the extra size and it is just much more comfortable being supported by something.

Mostly portrait mode, though at times, I'll use landscape when the situation calls for it

I mostly use it in landscape because I like to multitask, but it's always nice when I switch up to portrait. Seems very natural, almost a different experience to me.

Portrait when holding it (unless watching a video)

Landscape when it's on a table

So 50/50, 60/40 who knows LOL
