iPod Does anyone actually like the 6th Gen Nano?

I am a professional DJ and the iPod Nano 6G is one of the best MP3 players on the market in my opinion for purely music. The reasoning is that if I am traveling overseas/interstate for a gig, I can transfer about 30GBS of music to the nano and select my playlists for the gig while I am on the plane. Very handy as it gives me things to do on the plane as well as save me some time.

The Nano is microscopic compared to the other gear I need to take too.

My 10 year old nephew has one and it is his pride and joy. He knows I like Apple gear and couldn't wait to show it to me.

He saved up for it and got it with his own money rather than getting it as a gift or whatever, and he absolutely loves it to bits because it does everything he wants and nothing he doesn't want.

Recently, macmall was selling them for $100 on ebay brand new...so I finally picked one up. The biggest problem was the almost year people had to deal with poor battery life because you couldn't turn the thing off. Apple took WAY too long to fix that blatant screw up.

As of today tho, I like it. Not entirely sold on the touch screen yet but its a pretty slick mp3 player for $100. I still wouldn't pay full price for one though...
 
I've got one and I'm well happy with it.

I used a Cowon S9 for quite a while but used to get lost navigating the menu's, it was also quite bulky to carry around.
Couldn't knock the sound though, really good.

I approached the ipod nano with some trepidation and a reluctancy to give up the Cowon but was eventually sold on the small size and the convenience of the clip on the back.
Needn't have puzzled over it though, the little touch screen is excellent, simple to navigate and fast, the clip is sturdy and the sound quality is fine through a pair of Sennheiser earbuds.
The added bonus is how well it works with my macbook (obvious, I know, but I'm relatively new to macs and apple products and always struggled with Windows media player and mp3 players, I know itunes gets a bashing sometimes but it's the only media tool I've actually got to grips with and understood)

So, yes I'm chuffed with my Nano 6G.
Oh, and I payed full price for it and don't regret it a bit.:)

What? Hold down the power button and you will see the familiar OS X spinning boot indicator. After that, the 6th gen shuts down. Reboot by holding the same large button then the Apple logo appears and it's ready to go.

On a side note, this is one of the fastest booting iPods I've used in a long time and mine is a 16 GB model. I only wish I got something different this time. A red model perhaps. Oh well, the longer I have it, the more it grows on me. :)
 
my only guess with this is:
the new nano is for teens/kids.
they have small hands (still), they like small device, they don't bother about ease of use and ergonomics, and most of all it's a fashionable object.
for me it's a complete mess. i just cannot think about an ipod without the scroll wheel.

FYI now i'm finally iOS free :)
i had a touch, then i had an iphone, now i'm back to a classic (5g) and a 20 bucks phone, because all the mobile thing was making me mad, anxious and bored.
 
I still like my Nano but I am thinking I will return it. I just installed an 8gb CF card into my old Mini last night and it is zippy fast. Being that I own a 60gb 5th gen (classic), a sansa clip and now a flash based iPod Mini It's silly for me to have the Nano... Save that 115 bucks for something a little bit more useful... Like rent.

Still sad... I really like the nano.

I can clip it to my boxers and play basketball/run/do stadiums all without having to worry about it move around

I love my 6th gen nano
 
5G Nano Was The Pinnacle

I eagerly awaited the 6G thinking they would keep the 5G design intact and raise the capacity from 16G to 32G. I literally had the money in my hand....

And then I saw the 6G.....wow, what a disappointment!!!

1) Ability to play movies
2) Camera
3) Click wheel (very nice in dark or while in pocket)
4) No capacity bump

What you get for "crippling"
1) Microscopic "touch screen"
2) Same price as full featured previous version :eek:

Apple is now run by businessmen who dictate to engineering and not vice versa. The trend is to compartmentalize the products and a fully functional Nano was seen as a threat to the Touch. It HAD to be taken down a notch....and was.

EPIC FAIL!!!!:mad:

I think they just wanted to freshen up an old design and bring it back to a music based player... but that's my opinion.

I haven't owned a Nano since the first gen which I didn't end up keeping. I actually really dig the new one as long as you know what you're getting... the price does seem a bit steep though. I think the 16gb should go for maybe 129 while the 8gb should go for between $79-99. But isn't that what we all say about every Apple product? The base model MBA should be closer to $799, etc :p

My kids for mother's day bought the 6th gen for me and the iWatchz Q collection so I can wear it like a watch. (it helps if you put things on your Amazon wishlist :p ) Any way I knit, crochet, and spin fiber and I love to listen to my music or podcasts so the watch works out perfectly. Would work great too for people that exercise. I really enjoy it, makes it alot easier to just move around with my daily chores/hobbies and not worry about it falling off or getting in the way.

Small storage size, and controls that can't be used without looking at the screen? The iPod Classic is the music lover's iPod.

That's only half true... the double click for next track works great as a sight free control. If they'd put the same button scheme as the headset on the power button that would be the best. The problem with the classic is the slight pause before the thing starts playing due to it's HDD. It's not a horrible thing but that quarter second does seem jarring after using iPod Touch and Nano players all these years. That's why I shoved a CF into my old mini. It would be amazing if they made a flash based classic though.
 
My only complaint is the clip. Given i'd mostly put it in a pocket rather than clip it onto a belt or anything, the clip pretty much doubles the thickness without providing any benefit. A removable clip would be ideal.

Love mine

I travel a lot and use mine when I am on airplanes for music. Why not use the phone? I do a lot of long flights and the phone is bulky; I also don't want to use the battery of the phone when I don't have to. I have a 160gb classic that I never use since I got the nano.

Only complaint is that 16 gb isn't enough for my music, even when down converting to 128kbps. Battery life seems to be fine; 12+ hrs without charging or even worrying about running low. I used to use a shuffle, but the nano is a lot better.

I agree 100% - especially your first statement. I even watched the press conference to see how the new 6G was going to look - and then I saw it. The money went back in my pocket and I am keeping my 5G a bit longer. I'm not sure I even need a Nano anymore, but I like using one for music in the car so I don't have to worry about draining my iPhone battery. 32GB would have been awesome, and the 5G style and shape was perfect. Who wants a microscopic touch screen anyway? Apple dropped the ball on this big time.

Then buy the 5th gen

The only thing I do wish was incorporated (that would be cool) is better use of the touchscreen ( would be cool to control volume just by "spinning" your finger around). And maybe a glass screen that doubles as a giant button

Oh and come on apple let us choose our own backgrounds lol

Sure...AFTER the firmware was updated to 1.1...for many months when it first came out, you could not turn it off. This feature was not added until Spring of this year...well over 6 months after it was released.

Is there really a 32GB iPod nano?
 
Nano works for me since the off-switch upgrade

I have had three previous ipods, 1st gen, 3rd gen and 1st gen Touch. 1st one developed a board problem and was unusable. I keep the 3rd gen in my car plugged in to my stereo because I got tired of replacing the battery. The Touch is long in the tooth and needs a new battery but I can't decide between replacing the battery, upgrading to a newer one, switching to an ipad or iphone (when t-mobile gets one this fall). Got the nano for travel and exercise and it just works with music without being saddled to do too much. For the moment, I get my music without having to focus on what else the device should do. The upgrade that gave it a real off switch made all the difference, before that, I always seemed to be run down when I went to use it.
 
My mother owns the previous gen Nano and my brother owned 4th Gen. Both like that form factor and neither can understand the horrible incarnation that Apple calls the 6th Gen Nano. My brother would still have his 4th Gen if he hadn't got a Droid smartphone.
 
Middle of the road...

I like the size and battery life, but it is less functional and harder to use than the previous versions. Especially difficult is getting it to shuffle in a playlist, move from screen to screen and just plain see the screen in sunlight. Needs work.
