Weird. Mine has that F4 key also, but it only launches Launchpad with fn-F4, not just F4 by itself. I think all the fn modifiers are locked.
Go to System Preferences>Keyboard and un-check "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."

I just tried that for the first time and ended up with a very transparent set of icons. Is it supposed to do that?
I don't believe that doing a 5 finger gymnastic gesture and then moving the mouse pointer to the required application and clicking on it could ever be faster than hitting cmd+space, typing the first two or three letters of the desired app and hitting enter.
Why not just drag the entire Applications folder to the right side of the dock (or the bottom, if your using the dock on the side), right click on the folder in the dock and then choose "Display as folder" and "View contents as grid". Then you have the exact same functionality that is easily accessible.
Some of us old people use they keyboard a lot to get our work done. I still don't see how it will be faster than taking your hand off the trackpad and doing cmd+space bar. You can do that with your eyes closed.Waaay faster if your hand is already on trackpad.
It wasn't customizable.

I love the assumption everyone has that everyone uses a laptop.

Keep pinching in and it'll show up. I just did it.
Edit: Also use a hot corner. It's quite quick. No need for Launchpad to take up space on the dock.
I never understood why there isn't a Spotlight key on the keyboard.Thanks. Yeah, mine is off too but still works. Seems to need a hardcore key remap software.
