I’m not rich or anything. I just love it when people ask “Is that the new iPhone?” And saying “why yes. Yes it is. Do you like it?” parings a smile to my face.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt “pressured,” but I do prefer to save my pennies throughout the year to upgrade. I have absolutely loved the minis. Going from 7 to X was a big jump. When 11 came, I thought it was too big(much like the Plus versions of 6-7. I liked how the 11 Pro was still 5.8”. When 12 came, I thought 6.1 was still too big, so I went mini. and again with the 13. But with no mini on the horizon, I’m going back to Pro, jumping to the 6.1”. Just because I work hard, it’s one of my only luxuries, and I feel like I deserve it. But not because of pressure.
I can’t get the strike-through to come off. I copied and pasted and formatted in notes, then copied and pasted. Nothing seems to work.

Does anyone else feel the pressure to have either the latest device, or at the very least a 'Pro' phone?
I’m 40 years old so I’m a bit old for pressure over trivial things like having the latest phone to be honest.

I’d say nearly every single person I know is not into phones and either has no idea what is current or doesn’t really care. I upgrade when I fancy it and never buy the Pro models (when new) on principle because I’m not dropping a grand on a mobile phone. I might get the 13 Pro once the 14 is released and take advantage of a price reduction on contract. The 13 Pro will be sooo last year and i’ll care as much as you can imagine lol.

No.

I'm not swayed by the "need" to have the latest and greatest. If a camera/lens/phone/computer/whatever no longer suits my needs, then I'll look to replace it. But that's based on my needs, not whether something brand new is available.

I don't feel pressured from a "is it as cool" perspective, but the one time I didn't buy the flagship iPhone I regretted it because I felt I was missing out on features. I bought the XR, as an example, and it was a nice phone, but coming from my 7 Plus, it had no zoom lens, and a worse display, and a significantly worse display than the XS OLED. I regretted not paying up for the XS. So I replaced the XR with the 11 Pro -> 13 Pro, and will likely replace 13 Pro for 15 Pro Max.

Some are taking this as "do you feel the pressure to not hang on to an old phone", rather than "do you feel the pressure to buy a Pro device even if that's not the one you want, for the sake of status".

Put it this way...

If I had say, a 12 Pro or 13 Pro (even though I prefer the mini), I'd feel I wasn't being judged, but if I had a 12 mini or 13 mini, or the standard (non-Pro) 13, others would think - "can he not afford a Pro?", "don't you prefer the Pro?", "the 13 Pro is a cooler, more premium phone" etc.

So I feel that pressure to buy a 12 Pro, 13 Pro or even the new 14 Pro for status/credibility - even though I'm perfectly happy with my 13 mini.

Even on this forum - why do so many people favour the Pro models over the non-Pro or mini? Seems like 80% of people on here have a Pro or Pro Max.

I know it sounds moronic, but it does cross my mind despite knowing it shouldn't.

No, I don’t. I vote with my wallet and budget.
This. If I can afford something, and I can justify what it brings me at that price, I buy it. If I can't or I don't feel it's worth it for the price being asked, I don't. It's a phone, not a lifestyle.

"FOMO" is a nice way of saying lack of self control.

I actually think quite highly of the people in my circle that either deliberately use a dumb phone or still use an iPhone 4. Those people, in my opinion, are the actual cool ones.

(I’m using an iPhone SE. Mostly because I really dislike Face ID. But even when (if ever) a new iPhone with Touch ID comes out, I would feel no need to upgrade at all.)

I think a lot of people like the good cameras on the "premium" phones...

Still have an 11, it's fine, a phone is a phone to me, I use it for calls more than anything. Although that said since our first grandson came along the camera has become very important. Not that I find the camera on the 11 poor, quite the opposite, it's great. But if an upgrade to the 14 improved that in ways I don't currently know I would upgrade for that alone.

Still using an Xs, so not really.
I do love the zoom lens though, so as much as I’d prefer the 13 Mini, when it comes time to upgrade (possibly this upcoming cycle) I’ll probably go for a 14 Pro, for the camera & stainless steel (more durable without a case).

But if you don’t care about the zoom lens, the 13 Mini is a wonderful phone!

+1
I have an iPhone 12 mini and absolutely love the form-factor, but I really miss the telephoto lens for a specific photographic style that I love, and the battery is also pretty bad (the 13 mini has a better battery, though). For these 2 reasons I will get the iPhone 14 pro.

But I always feel I'm 'missing out' on not having a Pro phone, even though I wouldn't use any of the additional features. Sure, 120hz, a better battery and a bigger screen are all nice things, but I definitely don't need them.

That's exactly what Apple wants you to think. Just look at the features and your life and buy what you need to be happy, not what Apple tells you that you need to be happy.

I had to look FOMO up.
Nope not my thing.

But I also found JOMO
That is much much better.

Walk your own path! 😍

My XR will be good for another year or 2.
Priorities can change.....doesn't matter as long as we decide ourselves, and are pleased with it.

I always WANT the latest and greatest, but since the iPhone X came out, I am more reluctant to update yearly like I used to.

Especially with the pandemic hitting, my lifestyle has changed, and thus my needs with the phone itself.

For example, I went for the "Plus/Max" models when I used to commute on the train daily, so I could have a bigger screen to watch movies on during the commute.
With me working remotely most days today and driving in when I do go in, that need is now gone, and I am focusing more on portability than anything else.

I did go for a 12 PRO, but I only went pro for the bump in RAM - because I wanted the phone to last as long as possible and I will always justify more RAM.

I did not upgrade to the 13 because, to me personally, it was pointless, the screen looks nice, but today I use it for pretty much some web surfing, emails, and texting, so the need for a phone has really gone down.

Will I get the "14"? I will wait until they announce it to decide, based on rumors, I have zero reason to upgrade and although the WANT is there, the WANT to not spend $1000+ just to have the latest and greatest, knowing all the upgrades are pointless to me personally is more justifiable.

Long-winded way of saying, everyone is different, only you know what you want/need and are willing to compromise.

Probably the most materialistic post I've ever made. It's going to sound a little silly but it's been on my mind for a little while and thought I'd see if anyone else feels similarly. Hear me out.

Does anyone else feel the pressure to have either the latest device, or at the very least a 'Pro' phone?

I have a 13 mini and it ticks so many boxes - small, practical, can be used one handed, light, good battery etc. It really works for me in a lot of ways.

But I always feel I'm 'missing out' on not having a Pro phone, even though I wouldn't use any of the additional features. Sure, 120hz, a better battery and a bigger screen are all nice things, but I definitely don't need them.

It's more the status of having a 'Pro' phone.

Even though it would be so awkward for me - the weight, the bulk with a case, the need for two hands, and the price premium - for some reason I still feel I 'need' one.

Is it an image thing? Do I sub-consciously think that people will think less of me because I have a 13 mini instead of a Pro? Am I thinking they're wondering whether I can't afford a more expensive phone rather than it being a choice? To be blunt, are non-Pro phones viewed as less "cool"? (ugh I feel so old putting the word cool in quotations).

I know come September, even though the 13 mini is fine, I'll still be thinking I need to buy the 14 Pro because it's the latest phone.

I know none of this should matter, it's materialistic, and most people couldn't care less, but why do I still think that way?
No i will not buy the 14 now in this autumn.
Sticking with my 12 PM for a couple more years, even if the phone is giving me headache sometimes.

For iPhones, I never really get a new model every year. I got a 8 GB 3G in 2008, a used 3GS in 2009, which had more space for music, which lasted until 2011 when I got the 4S. I used the 4S until 2015 when I got the 6, which I replaced with a used iPhone 8 since the battery was dying on the 6 and not the fastest thing.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro, which I upgraded in 2020 since I needed more space, but I don’t plan to upgrade it until early 2024 since it does everything I need it to. I just find upgrading iPhones every year a waste since the features added are incremental.

As for my Macs, I keep them as long I can, but I upgraded to Apple Silicon and ditched all my Intel Mac since there is really no future for those and they are already slow. My 2018 Macbook Pro, which has Big Sur is pretty slow compared to my M1 Pro Macbook Pro and M1 Max Mac Studio, which can probably easily last 5 years or more. In fact, I used my 2012 non-Retina Macbook Pro 15-inch from May 2013 until late 2020, which gotten too slow and obsoleted by Apple as it only supports Catlina, which I never upgraded to. It had Mojave installed.

Had a friend who just last week replaced her iPhone 5… only because it shattered after a huge fall. She was devastated to lose use of it.

She got an 11 on a discount but misses her old phone.

Not everyone has the want or need to have latest and greatest. Peer pressure was in my teen years not 40s!

People need to feel comfortable with their lives and themselves.
Our friends Androids take and show snapshot photos miles better than professional iPhone photos, but I feel no pressure to switch to Android. Same thing.
I do always choose Pro Max models with high capacity storage because of my useage.

I don't feel pressure to always be on the latest and greatest, just evaluate my needs & wants when it comes time to upgrade (when the old device isn't cutting it anymore in some way), make a choice and stick with it.

Once I've decided it's time to upgrade, I like to make a list of my top needs & wants and rate those from most to least important, then compare against the available devices to help see which is the best fit. While I'll generally buy the newest generation when it's time for a new device, I won't always buy the high-end model, it's often unnecessary. Just bells and whistles I'll never need.

Perhaps oddly? No social pressure either.
Maybe it's just that I have a good group of friends & acquaintances who aren't consume product types, chasing after the latest thing because it's the latest thing. There's no pressure one way or the other. I've never really felt shame in having a "lesser" model or guilt at buying a high-end model.

I don’t feel social pressure but being a fan of following apple and tech news I do find myself being convinced of upgrading. I for one basically upgrade every year, and justify it by telling myself the phone is my most used personal tech device. So even small year over year upgrades are ‘worth’ it based on that mental frame.

With trade ins and resale value it ends up costing a few hundred to upgrade rather than the entire cost of the device which also helps.

That being said I recognize I’m kind of being influenced/manipulated by the corporate marketing machine 🤷🏾‍♂️

Definitely though I don’t feel any sort of pressure from friends colleague or anyone around or even anyone on the internet lol it’s just myself wanting to do it
