iPads can be convenient in soem circumstances, but nothing beats a 75 inch 4K TV.

No, but I used to have the mentality that I didn’t need a TV due to having an iPad/MacBook/iPhone. Now that I’ve gotten an 65” OLED LG TV, I actively avoid watching media like tv series, movies, or long/HQ YouTube videos on my iPad or iPhone because it’s so much of a better experience to watch it on my TV.

Yes, Apple devices have great displays, but you just can’t get as immersive and relaxed of an experience on a portable device compared to a large TV panel. Even if you move the device close to your face, it’s just not the same.

By that logic all you need is an iPhone really close to your face, right? Wonder why people go to the cinema then… :)
Well yes, that’s exactly it.

People used to go to the movie theater because that was the only way to get a large view. Most people only had 27 or 32 inch televisions in their house, and you couldn’t sit close to those because they got grainy when you got closer.

Now you could get inexpensive large televisions, or computer monitors and tablets that are extremely high definition so you could sit close to them.

I haven’t been to a movie theater in over a decade and I never plan on going back.

I sometimes watch tv on my iPad when other members of the household are watching stuff on our modest 42” 1080p LED tv, or occasionally in bed when I’m finishing watching something late.

I don't watch much, but it is my TV set replacement for when I do. All I really ever use a TV for these days is for videogame consoles.

I'd love one of those 100 inch TVs, but I can't see spending $20,000 for a freakin' TV.
I spent close to 10k on buying the last three TV's i owned ?

Pioneer 43xde £2900 (Old ex Living room TV )
Pioneer Lx508D £3300 (TV in Living Room)
Sony 65AF9 £3700 (TV in Bedroom)

And now thinking of buying a new 55" OLED to replace the Lx508D

No, I use my desktop monitor for that. I'm very unlikely to get another television.
I find myself watching various content through my desktop monitor more often than ever now.

I no longer eat in the kitchen, I bring all of my meals to my desk.

This is beyond relatable, it almosts hurts. I've seriously considered buying two computer chairs, especially if I can ever get my own place. One for me and one for my guest for movies/gaming in front of a 27 inch computer monitor.

I have a Sony 75 inch, around $3500. I suspect those 100 inch TVs are for people building home theaters and are spending $50,000 to rehab a room. Not for some dude putting one up in his apartment :)

When I want to settle in and watch a full length movie I like to use the big screen TV. For many other cases I use the 12.9" iPP. I can move it easily to other rooms or locations. I can do my stretching exercises in the hallway or cook in the kitchen or park myself other places around the house while watching shorter subjects.

I see people often talking about using an iPad to watch movies or shows, and it doesn’t seem like they are only talking about doing it while on the go.

Do you watch movies and shows on your iPad at home? If so, why do you prefer to do it that way then using a television.

Does anyone use an iPad only and not have a television?
I have a television but almost EXCLUSIVELY do my movies/shows viewing on my 2020 iPad Pro 12.9. Like a earlier comment, I enjoy the insulated experience with my beats headphones. My Flat screen 55 in hasn't been ON in over a year, since I upgraded my PC gaming to a gaming monitor. So, wholeheartedly, the iPad is IT for me.

4. The S7+ has slightly more screen real estate than the 12.9 (as well as better audio and video, as it's oled), but I would like a larger tablet (I know Apple is working on a 14-15in iPad pro, but it won't be before several years if ever, according to Gurman), so I'll probably pick the Tab S8 ultra (14.6in but still lighter than the M1 12.9) when it comes out.
if you can get your hands on one. They’re rumoured to only make 0.4 million units of it if I’m not mistaken.

it’ll be interesting to see what Samsung does to push their tablets forward. I hope it’s not just a spec bump and the intro of this 8 Ultra.

I find that I use iPad almost entirely for enjoying live TV/streaming/media/whatever, and in the past year or two it has been rare that I turn on our television (it is a 10 year old Sony 52", and I have no thoughts of replacing with something newer/larger/higher quality).

The quality of the 11" iPad Pro screen and ability to watch in any room, keep it with me, is a big plus. I also watch on my iMac as a secondary device fairly often.

Samsung has already done a lot (compared to the other Android tablet makers, and in part to iPad too) but it's not enough...

What Samsung has compared to the others (Android or iPad):
- 3 years of upgrades and 4 years of security support (only iPad does better)
- DEX (some manufactures don't even have video out), which gives you proper external display supports, something even the iPad pro lacks
- Much better multitasking (better than iPad for sure)
- Desktop optimized browser (compared to other Android devices, but Safari is better)
- Second monitor feature including audio (wireless)
- Better file management compared to iPad (this is something Android in general as files are treated like in a desktop OS)

What it lacks compared to iPad (things they need to improve)
- Optimize the browser speed (it's slower than Safari in a first gen iPad pro, while the TAB S7 is faster than a second gen pro). This is a general problem with Android browsers, none is even close to iPad Safari.
- Add hand rejection when holding the tablet (iPad does, Samsung not at all)

What they cannot do:
oblige developers to write apps for Android (they have done already a lot, and there are even great productivity apps for free or discounted in Samsung tablets). However some things are going to improve, like the fact that Lumafusion is coming to Android soon.

S8 Ultra
This could be big (pun intended). A 14.6in tablet that is lighter than the M1 12.9. It may be the ultimate video watching tablet. Also Android has an App called Superdiplay which works better than both Duet pro and Luna Display as a second monitor, and also than Samsung native second display (no latency, even when used wireless, but no audio).

Apps
They have almost caught up with iPad when it comes to note-taking. They will soon catch up in video editing with Lumafusion. They are behind in drawing, despite the great Clip Studio (no procreate). They are behind in photo editing. They are equal or even slightly better with Office apps. Equal with Google apps. Facebook apps are poorly optimized instead. They are slightly behind in remote desktop (mainly because they lack the best remote for iPad, jump desktop, or rather jump desktop on Android is inferior). The generalization "Android apps on tablets are just blown apps phone apps" is generally false, but it's true for some apps, like facebook ones.

So, to sum up, there are things they can do, things they are doing, but ultimately they cannot force developers. However if they can manage to make their browser as smooth as safari, that would be a great step forward...

Yes. I've got a first gen 12.9. I use it to watch all my media at home. I do not use a television. This has been a real convenience for me, especially while I'm currently ill and stuck I'm bed mostly.

Now that I have an amazing TV (LG 48” OLED) with Apple TV for surround sound on my AirPods, I use that all the time. But before that my iPad was fine at the diner table while eating or even on the couch (although quite uncomfortable I have to say). Eating on the couch + iPad watching never worked for me though and that’s a deal breaker. It would have to hang hands-free in close to my face.

My method is... if I'm watching something solo, the iPad is perfect for that use case. I even try to make sure I find HDR content to watch with it, definitely a joy to use. I can use my AirPods Max and I'm set. But anything besides solo... obviously, TV is the best use case.
