I am a once retired police officer who went back in part time. I work a lot of “off duty” security jobs where I am stuck sitting in my car for 8-12 hours at a time. The iPad gives me Netflix, YouTube, and MacRumors forums while I work so technically it makes me money as it gives me something to do while sitting!

What do you mean by designing RPG content? Interested to hear more about that!

Tabletop RPG stuff.

ummmm, I use it as my main writing tool.
I use the pencil and MS Whiteboard to display maps in remote games.
Obviously Pixelmator used to mod and annotate maps from photos.
And then it runs the game using Discord.

I don't think RAM will make any difference between 8GB and 16GB for Lumafusion
I'll test it. I have some pretty big movies to export. The ones I've seen tested seem to be quite small. But as the iPad Pro 2020 is currently my main editing workstation, it gets a lot of use.

I’m a professional photographer and although I use lightroom classic to organise things on my Mac mini and my server(no decent equivalent dam on the iPad), I do all the editing on the iPad in lightroom and/or affinity photo. I also run my business with it, and all that that entails - emails, office work, making and updating my web presence etc. I also use the iPad to access, control and and manipulate anything on my Mac mini. At this point it’s a little like macos as an app, but the iPad is the instigator for it all.

cartoonist who used the ipad to draw, color export as psd even without the stylus
did not get paid for this, but who know down the road:

I do all my invoices on the Ipad but I recently upgraded to the 12.9” and will be ordering the magic keyboard and a usbc to ethernet adaptor so it will now helpme with my remote support of clients and onsite programming of access points or routers

Interesting thread and an excellent counterpoint to the “iPad is a toy“. Can I do everything on iPad even if I do much? No, not yet as I need Fusion 360, Blender and definitely Medeley for some of my work. Please give us a macOS app shell on iPads for the occasional macOS App. However, I think Apple rather see that we bought a shiny new iMac plus a 2021 iPP so fat chance of that.

In nerds’ world, the only professional work on the planet is video editing.
It's certainly the only work I do that makes the CPU stressed in Mac world because it can't be easily handed off to external processing (unlike compiling code).

But yes, I get your point, a M1 processor won't help you much if your professional work is driving a bus or flipping burgers.

Perhaps not now but the version they design to take advantage of it all will for sure.
At this point Lumafusion can't even take advantage of more than 5GB, so even the 8GB makes no difference compared to a 6GB pro 2020 from purely a RAM point of view...
Apple should increase the limit to probably 7GB so that the 8GB iPad can be fully used, but it's highly unlikely that they will increase any more than that, for the reasons I have explained in the other thread about RAM. And there is nothing Lumafusion can do about it...
PS what I explained in the other thread is that whenever they have done 2 RAM variants of the same chip in the past, they have treated both the same way. So, for instance for the 1TB 2018 pro apps can't access 5GB like the 2020, but only 3GB, like the 4GB variant (they cannot distinguish between RAM variants, A12X is A12X and that's it).So why did Apple offer 6GB for 1TB? Likely to incentivize the 1TB version (and also make it more expensive).
With M1 it's even easier, since they already have the 16GB for the mac, they didn't even have to go through the trouble of specifically creating a different version for the TB storage tiers. So don't expect Apple to let apps being able to distinguish 2 different M1 iPads

If not my company going backwards and requires “anti virus” software to be installed for remote computing I can well use an iPad to access the company’s computer. And now I need a MacBook because of this ridiculous requirement.

As it stands now yes, but we must wait until the new os to see what’s going to happen with regards to this.

One of ours is even more restrictive: Windows 10 only. Required their own AV scan, too before allowing install of the VPN software. Had to actually use a spare SSD and fresh install Windows 10 since the AV scan was timing out on my Dropbox folder (hundreds of thousands of files).

Now that i have an M1 12.9, i’m finding it hard to justify having this and a 16-inch Macbook Pro. The only thing keeping me from selling the MacBook is using a desktop publisher like inDesign or Affinity Publisher. But once Publisher is released for iPad, all bets are off.

Im an illustrator and 3d artist, I don't make money with my ipad directly since for serious work I have a beefy PC, but I do a lot of sketching in procreate and sculpting in nomad which I then finish in photoshop or zbrush, it's especially nice to take a brake from my office room and just sketch on the couch or in the garden.

Haha I figured out the whole thing myself… my company doesn’t support Mac at all. But they use standard softwares like Citrix and VMWare so with the correct setting I can connect to the company computer as well BUT the stupid requirement of AV made it impossible to use it on the iPad. Corporate IT is one of the force preventing our society to move forward.

Check out the affinity suite
