The cesspit of civilization
I use it to access the clinical files for my patients whenever my MacBook's battery drains and I don't have the charger with me. I also used it to remote access to a server with dedicated software to read biological data and do clinical reports of several conditions this months that my new MBP was out of commission.

It is a mini 5.

I do a lot of writing, planning, studying, thinking and organising on my iPad Pro; have done for 6+ years. I‘m a coach, facilitator and organisational consultant - there is very little (virtual facilitation, and moderately complex powerpoints and spreadsheets basically) that the iPad Pro doesn’t handle fairly well.

I do spend much of my day atm in front of my mac; but the iPP is a great productivity device and it forces me to focus differently (monotasking) which is helpful.

I have already answered to the topic but it was rather abstract so now I will provide more concrete example. I got a task from my boss (lucky me) to prepare a presentation for a concept/strategy for a certain technical solution in our department. Long story short - I am a manager of software teams, but quite often also play the role of the System Architect. In this specific case I am getting annoyed that my team has to maintain rather old application that my guys do not want to know about when we have another solution brewing in the responsibility of a co-worker under my boss. So my boss asked me to prepare a PPT to share with product management and basically open up a discussion.

Thing is that is not my specialty and I had to do some research on these technologies, frameworks being used, common patterns and architectures. I use extensively the iPad and the pencil for such kind of research. I usually import lots of web pages (in this case 200 pages worth of reading) into Notability and then highlight with the pencil and even write down stuff. Once I am ready with this sort of processing, I would store some of the images in the Photos app. Then I structure my newly accumulated knowledge in OneNote with the photos.

In Notability I also plan the structure of the PPT and how I would visualize the architectural concepts. Lastly I create the Powerpoint. Now of course I can do it in the traditional way - reading the pages on my laptop and writing notes in a notebook (no printer at home) but I am way faster doing this type of research with my iPad and the pencil.

It would be interesting to know if anybody uses the 11” as a primary/only device for professional photo/video editing, and why they chose it over the 12.9”.

I can tell you that I use my iPP 11 for probably 90% of my photo and video editing these days. I can’t say that it’s my ONLY device, since my PC is still required for some heavier work, however the iPP has replaced most of the work I used to do on the PC. I shoot a lot of photos and videos for my work and the iPP has saved me a ton of time in getting content finished.

Now if Apple would unleash the iPad to its true potential by giving it a real file system and real multitasking, then it could very well replace my PC for those tasks. I think it’s a tragedy that the M1 is saddled with those ridiculous limitations on iOS/iPadOS when it can very clearly handle high-end desktop tasks easily.

The only factor for the 12.9 vs the 11 for me would be whether I will be using the iPad mostly at home (or similar environment) or a device I will be carrying around very often. I considered the 12.9 but it’s just too large to carry around regularly and easily pull out and use, but I will confidently say that I have never felt that I needed a larger screen when using my 11.

I use my iPad Air 3 as an external display for my translation work.

Of course, I could do this without an iPad—an ordinary external display would have been fine as well, but I like the idea of having a portable external display that also happens to be useful for other things.

I could certainly do my work without it, but it's useful in this regard.

I'm using my 12.9 Pro 2021 for photo editing (with occasional money earning). I especially love the blacks which makes it very accurate to work with. Here are some examples, done with Lightroom and Affinity Photo. I do my complete workflow on my iPad now.

What apps are you using for your photo and video editing?

Pretty surprise that any company would allow personal devices to connect to the network. Given the current incursions, that's a practice that should end. I don't even think the fed allows this...

My company allows personal devices, however our devices are monitored 24/7. During initial setup we are required to allow the company full access (which can include files saved).

I use Affinity and LumaFusion.
I also use Affinity Photo and Designer. though not as much as Lightroom. Adobe Premiere Rush is still a huge disappointment, years after its launch. LumaFusion is much more a professional product than Rush, which I consider to be a very basic video editor.

I do, I am a RE investor and I also founded a charity that houses the homeless. I have an iMac at the office and an iMac Pro at home and I love the way I can seamlessly move between devices.

On a non-professional basis, I also do photography and videography and I find the iPad Pro works well with both.

It’s not my primary but I chose the 11” due to ultimate in portability and I am super happy with the size and performance.

The 12.9” would have been too close to my 16” MacBook Pro and a pain to carry on travel assignments. Interestingly I find the screen quality of the 11” to be very close to that of my 16” MBP.

My primary home computer is a high spec iMac Pro attached to about 300TB of raid arrays that archive over one million images taken over my career.

So far the new iPad Pro is killer for what I need it for and that is a backup device for the portable category, super light travel computer for when ingesting digital, post processing and digital in general is low priority ( I also do a ton of work on film for final prints made in a darkroom).
