So you’d catch a glimpse of your notifications, then have to pull the shade back down to interact with them? That adds steps.

No it doesn’t. Currently in iOs12 once face rec unlocks your phone you have to swipe up from the middle of the screen to view your notifications. Then swipe up from the botton to access home.

Had they just made it unlock and go straight to home you could still swipe down to see notifications.

Adds zero extra steps but appeases many users.

Really? Your notifications aren’t just sitting on the lockscreen, visible and ready to interact with, as soon as the screen turns on (like on a 7 or 8 model)? How do you know you have notifications to view?

Not anymore. You have to access it by swipping up.

Plenty of tips online on how to have it set, to merely go to the home screen...

Prove it.

You’re mistaken. When I wake my X’s screen, my notifications are on the lock screen no need to swipe up. The settings to enable it are in notifications and faceid/passcode.

Notifications are on the lock screen and they expand when when Face ID unlocks the phone.

The only step required is to look at the phone, which you would have to do to see the notifications.

By the way, every user interaction you have proposed sounds like an horrendous idea.

Horrendous idea? Then why are there people asking for it?

Should be an option. Not saying it should be the only option...

You will adapt and get used to it.

Such a lazy response...

Just to say I agree fully, if you don't use notifications this intermediate screen is just a nuisance. I'll be de-activating face-id because it is just a painful annoyance.

Apple should just add this option.

Few will avoid using notifications for this reason.

Entering a passcode every time you use your phone vs FaceID is a waste!

I love it when people are so stubborn they end up punishing themselves!

What if you’re up to date with your notifications? I use my phone for work a lot so most of the time I have no unread notifications... why have that extra step?

Just because apple says so doesn’t means it’s correct. There are tons of iser flawys with iphones face ID.

I hate when people are sheep they end up holding everyone else back.

There's no extra step.

There is one step: swipe to unlock.

That way your phone doesn't unlock every time you look at it.

Moot point. This is the way it is, deal with it!

Maybe it should unlock to homescreen when no notification is on the lockscreen because theres nothing to see there. But if you have notifications it should just unlock and requires a swipe. Would at least be a better solution than now.

But what do you do when you just wake the device to use the flashlight or camera? Hmm

But what action would you be taking to tell the phone you want it to unlock?

I dont understand your question.

No notifications = unlock to homescreen
Notifications = just unlock and then swipe (like it is now)

So every time you look at your phone it unlocks?

Even sitting on your desk, if you look at it, it unlocks?

That would be so annoying and insecure.

What if I just want to see the time on the lock screen?

There needs to be an indication by the user that they want the phone to unlock. That's the swipe.

The swipe is the user command to unlock.

Do you have a x/xs?

It already unlocks every time you look at it. It just not bring you to the homescreen.

And for your looking-at-time case:

Its the same with touch id and rest to unlock. You have to wake the device (push homebutton) and rest your finger (unlock and homescreen)

Theres no change with face id. You have to wake the device (tap display) and look at your phone (unlock and homescreen)

With touch id plus rest to unlock you dont see your notifications or time either for more than a couple milliseconds.

What are you even talking about?

If you have face ID and you look at your phone your phone unlocks BUT does not go to the home screen... (<- the root of this conversation)

If you’re swipping to unlock you have no security enabled or you’re using an iPhone 4
