No. Will depend on the hardware. Nothing to do with the OS.

Neither 2 or 3 fit.

ok so you're waiting for the event for the bottom line specs and reveal, thats fine, but after that come on back to the poll and decide if its 2 or 3.

I'd say if you have intention to upgrade *if* (being the conditional) the specs are to your satisfaction, option 2 is probably more relevant.

I unfortunately cant add poll options now that the thread has been put up, and I don't wanna endlessly bicker about omission of options... this is just to spark conversation with some data points for insight

I'm just trying to clarify which option I would go with that most closely aligns with your predicament.

Been the Apple business model for the iPhone for a while.

I guess it’s intuitive for me to distinguish between what I’m getting from hardware vs. software. I’ve felt that we reached a point of basic hardware sufficiency some years ago. You can enjoy the OS an older phone and still have a good experience. Biggest reason to upgrade now seems to be to change screen size.

No it doesn’t take the steam out because iOS.14 takes longer to master (i.e widgets)
Also because it will be Few updates before it really runs smoothly
Not everybody downloads it when it first comes

I’m waiting for the pysical specs and ergonomic feel - then actual performance.

Once I have that I doubt I’ll be back. But you never know...

We have had a few discussions here and elswhere why Apple ties the OS release to the Hardware release. A number have felt they would be better split ... but ....it is what it is I guess.

A little bit actually. I wanted to upgrade my Xs to a 12 but after 14.0 it seems just as fast as ever. My battery health did drop from 96% to 94% after the upgrade. I am still getting all day life but its not quite as good. I still owe around 600$ on it too. I might hold out for a 12s. I have a 11 for work and use that camera and usually airdrop them to my personal phone.

There were no good answers to me. Being released early has no relevance to my decision. I'll make the determination on the phones whether I'll upgrade (cost of Pro, whether it supports mmWave 5G, spare cash, etc)

Having the OS being released before the device should not affect your decision on whether to upgrade. The only time OS was important was the Iphone 4s, when siri was implemented. I am not upgrading this year since I think 120hz is worth it, especially at the 1k price point.

To answer your question, it doesnt take the excitment out of upgrading, features that are unique to that device stay unique. I really want to upgrade solely due to the increased battery capacity.

It is for this reason that I decided not to upgrade my 1st gen SE this year. I'll be waiting to experience iOS 14 together with my new iPhone 12 Mini in a month's time :)

Not one little bit. iOS is most certainly a separate thing to changing phones. Roll on the iPhone 12 Mini!

Because I need to return my leased XS shortly I decided to take it to 14.0.1 for a laugh. It looks to me like a very minor upgrade. The app library looks so much like my existing app folders only less well organised and I use widgets very little anyway to warrant them on the home screen using battery (or maybe that's outdated info from Android?)

My temporary 2017 SE is still on 13.7 and there it shall stay. The battery is on the way out and web/app layouts are becoming less and less usable on the 4-inch screen.

I would imagine that it’s only normal for (most) people who hang around apple forums to upgrade every year.

For regular people, I’d imagine that it’s a 2-5 year occurrence.

So apple simply needs to nudge anyone who is thinking of an upgrade what a massive leap a new iPhone will be for them.

I can’t help thinking that the iPhone 11 (with a price cut) is still going to be a huge seller for this holiday season, in a pandemic.

IOS 14 is a work in progress. As third party vendors develop Widgets and Apple sends out a few updates we should see big improvement
I’m just surprised that Apple didn’t pick up on battery drain etc. with all the testers

Not to mention defiant refusal on iOS 14 to see the 5GHz Wi-fi in the house when that was the phone's only network on iOS 13 and five other different devices are just fine with it.

Odd, that doesn't seem to be a widespread issue. Not quite sure what would cause something like that.

iOS 14 was a boring upgrade anyways so it doesn't really matter. Besides, the software has never influenced purchasing a new iOS device.

Not relevant, wasn’t planning to upgrade.

With that said, the release of an iOS update would not affect my purchase of a new device anyway.

I actually think Apple did a good thing releasing iOS 14 earlier, so that by the time the new iPhone lands the iOS version is mature and most major bugs/issues are sorted out.

I think the iPhone 12 series will land with the least bugs on release, at least I hope.
