I heard that the Macbook Pros stopped production briefly earlier this week or last week. Perhaps this was connected with the LCD issue? Perhaps they got a bad shipment of LCDs and QC kicked in? Any idea? Has anyone recieved a Macbook Pro manufactured after the production started up again? How is your backlight?

Very interesting thanks for the info.

glossy or matte, makes no difference. It's about viewing angle. sit yourself directly in front of one side of your screen, the other side will become darker.

in my opinion matte is a nicer screen to work on when travelling. If you sit inside all day, glossy works well, just not flexible enough for me however...

there is no 'dark edges' problem... it's just viewing angle :)

If I'm not wrong the LCD panel is actually independent of the backlight, but the issue does not start only with the backlight. The matt screens are also extremely noisy.

Does it look grainy and a little bit blurred?

where did you hear this?
do you think it would have anything to do with the 17" problems? (i.e. nobody seems to have their 17" at all..)

is there any chance that apple will accept a request to give you one with a certain display model number? I would call them to ask for the 00009C60 display since that's the one without problems. I would also probably be calling the adc support since i'm a member.

No way. The 9C60 LCD has the uneven brightness also. Its just not as bad as the others.

As I've mentioned before, the lighting on my 9C60 is even. The only issue is that the bottom right corner appears a shade darker from certain angles, but it doesn't have to do with the actual brightness, since at other viewing angles it is just as bright as the rest of the screen (and additionally, the actual backlighting is definitely even and there is no backlight bleeding, which I've seen on other LCD's).

i just spoke with an apple developer connection representative. He said that if i had any problems with my screen when i buy to let them know and it will be taken care of by applecare and they would send me a replacement, or just a screen replacement.

FWIW, I just had mine delivered this morning (ordered the 4th) and I have the 9C60 Glossy screen with no issues either. Couldn't be happier.

that's nice to hear man, i think i'm going for the glossy. I will be goin to the apple store sunday to compare the matte vs. glossy just to make sure, and then apple will have all my money.

Cybix is spot-on here. I think it's more an issue with the wide-screen aspect ratio than anything else. If you adjust the angle correctly and sit straight on to the display, any "dark edges" will disappear. If you start tilting your panel, you'll see them reappear.

(I've got the 15" C2D MBP)

I seriously think most people are over analyzing this issue. The more problems you look for, the more you'll find. I just got my 2.33GHz 15" MBP (matte, week 44). Looks great. I asked a friend with perfect vision if the backlighting looked uneven and he said maybe it was a bit dimmer in the bottom right side, but I had a blank white screen up, which I would never normally have. Unless there's some sort of official confirmation of a recall or issue, I wouldn't worry about it.

I suspect all those reports of uneven backlighting are due really to the surface they are using on these new screens. They have extremely narrow viewing angles. Colours will start to shift even if you move a few angles.

I took some time last night to snap a picture of my screen in the dark. Not very significant unevenness, but I have to say it looks much worse during actual use than in that picture.

DON'T!

9C60 is the lousy one. The one you want are from earlier batches
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2727742#2727742

Did we read the same thread? The issues in that thread are about a bright bar at the bottom of the screen and deal primarily with the 9C57 and 9C62 models. One poster mentioned (back in June, mind you) that they had the same problem with the 9C60 but that is the only mention of that model besides the post to which the link takes you. In that post it states
Hopefully new machines are better. I guess they are with 9C60 screens.

To me that's implying the 9C60 models are better, not the lousy one.

I think there may be problems with any model line, some just more so than others. Again, I am writing this from a 9C60 with no issues at all...so they can't all be "lousy".

Dont like the grainy look at all and if you're making it grainy (organic as some people are calling it) for whatever reason at least make the thing evenly bright. I have yet to see a screen that beats my current PowerBook its bright and clear coated. no grains and VERY easy on the eyes. Model is 9C4E. Hopefully my glossy screen model does a fine job

I guess Apple is becoming mainstream now and are therefore cheaping out on some components. Displays and graphics cards thus far.

PS actually re-ordered last night est ship date is 14th and del is 20th. Hope it makes it earlier. Doubt it though, especially now that some people are saying production was/is temporarily halted.

Rather than replacements is it possible to send it in for servicing and tell them to specifically fix the backlighting?

Or better yet even replace the front coating on the LCD, whatever it is? IMO it is not the uneven lighting that is annoying. The damned thing shimmers, and it is so glaring.

Your link is from a forum thread from July, on Yonah MBPs - are the screens in the Meroms the same? We keep hearing that the screens are different.

And from several other threads here, it's been the "9C60" screens that have been superior.

:D

iBorg

I guess the Yonah people have been living with these issues all this while.
