Hi. Oh, at first, I was sceptical about your post, and I had a look to my wife's 13 mini. And sadly, I must admit it's not smooth at all. I don't remember seeing this on ios16. The screen animation are laggy. Usable for sure, but not smooth. She doesn't complain because she's not a techie girl at all, but this bothering me. :( If it was mine, I think I would try to reset it.

EDIT: I think it's because I'm conditioned by the better refresh rate of the 14 pro, so take what I wrote with a pinch of salt...

I noticed the slow down before I got my 15 Pro with the 120Hz screen, so take that with a pinch of salt.

Dude brings up the iphone 4 as "proof" that apple slows phones down. You do realise that was early in the smartphone era, right? Like, we've hit a point where phones can be updated much more and still retain good performance. Not really the own you think it is.

People are so dramatic on here. 2 OS updates and the phone is laggy as hell 😂 sure

I’ll never understand the denials here. It happens. It’s an objective fact. I understand you may not like it, but denying that iOS updates worsen performance and battery life will not make these issues disappear. It has happened, it is happening, and it will continue to happen.

Nah. I jump between a 13 mini and 15 Pro Max all day everyday and I find them both fine to use.

ProMotion obviously improves animation on the newer device but the mini seems good to me on iOS17. They’re a good match.

That was an example, but there's other cases (court cases), so the question is are we ignoring institutions of the civilised world and are we making self-justice now, like in the middle ages, or in the primitive animal world, or what now?

There was another case with iPods in the past as well. It's happened plenty of times and Apple lost every time and paid millions for it. I'm not sure what there is to not understand about this. They paid millions for it. Read the articles I linked, Apple in total paid just dozens of millions for one of the cases. And if you combine all these cases, they maybe spent hundreds of millions on this practice. Just the one case I linked at the start they paid almost 30 million £. Just to consumers, we're not talking about fines and other things yet.

So, usually, when my car is parked where it's allowed to be parked, I don't get to pay any fines and compensations. So that could be a sign … 😂

I get that people are mad and don't want to hear that their device is being degraded. Are we going to lie to ourselves now or what? Of course the iPhone 13 mini is fine to use with iOS 17. It's still massively slower than on iOS 15.

I came from a 2016 iPhone SE with iOS 15. I had to upgrade/update, though. Still fast as hell, but obviously almost 8 years old now. When first using the 13 mini with iOS 15, it felt like handling with light speed, even though the device was still indexing.

I updated it to iOS 17 and now it's more comparable to my 2016 iPhone SE. 😂

Of course it's fine to use and I'll be using it. Still a little bit disappointed, though. If you want security and features, update. If you want speed, certainly don't. I'm very sensitive to speed, reaction times, lags, etc.

I have noticed a slight slowdown in both my 13 Mini and iPad Mini 5. Not particularly happy about it, especially since software cannot be reverted in iOS. Both have been running 17 for a couple weeks, so it’s not an indexing issue.

Over the years, I have become convinced that Apple isn’t purposely slowing anything down, they just stop optimizing the OS for older devices. It’s kind of an indirect method of getting what they want, which is for all of us to upgrade to the latest and greatest. If they really had our best interests in mind, reverting of the software would be possible, as it is on MacOS. Apple got away with not allowing this on iOS because they did it from the beginning, and we all bought in as we were excited about new products (iPhone and iPad).

We can and should be able to install any OS we want. It’s kind of jacked up that we can’t.

Maybe the EU will make a law saying that smartphone users must have the ability to downgrade their firmware, especially since the makers of the software have a tendency to add features/bloat that will slow the users device down to unsatisfactory levels. When it's impossible to downgrade the software, the user is stuck with an experience that they didn't expect and there's no way to fix it other than buy a new phone.

The simple truth is the iPhone 4 never should have gotten iOS 7. It had a single core CPU, not enough RAM, etc... It ran iOS 6 like a dream but iOS 7 just demanded too many system resources. I never upgraded my 4 to iOS 7, I remember getting my 5 before we got to iOS 7 and after hearing how lousy the 4 runs it I told the person I sold it to (for cheap) that they shouldn't upgrade to iOS 7 because it will slow down the device. I saved them a world of hurt!

I think Apple realized this mistake, because I haven't seen them update an older phone to such a demanding OS since then. There's always a small slowdown because the newer OS is more demanding of the same hardware, but never to the extent of iOS 7 on the iPhone 4.

DON'T update your iPhone 13 mini to iOS 17!

Or stated differently:

DO update your iPhone 13 mini to iOS 17!

I think that effectively summarizes this thread, amiright?

I'd say it's 50/50, a lot said their device was slower. I updated it too after all. It's good and secure to make updates. The thread name should be: Don't update your iPhone 13 mini to iOS 17 if you want your iPhone to stay fast.

I’ve been using the iPhone 13 mini with iOS 17 for a while now (+ I have the 512 GB model, so it has more RAM) and it has most likely stopped indexing by now.

Well, let me tell you that it is horrible. I use Word and Notes a lot, and the keyboard just lags so much that it’s hard to take this device or iOS 17 seriously.

It may be cool for people who live with their parents and want to have all kinds of bubbly special effects when using the phone, but it’s nothing for the adult world where people work, lead businesses, have meetings and make money.

I don’t even type fast, but the keyboard just lags behind a lot. That’s been the typical weak spot for all iPhones, since the beginning.

I have Apple Care+ so I wonder what they’re going to do about this. This is obviously a child’s toy for watching funny YouTube clips and nothing more than that. It’s not a tool for serious work.

The problem: I was looking for a tool, not a toy!

Keyboard lag has always been the prelude to more severe degradation. Typically the first issue that arises is keyboard lag, which then worsens alongside everything else.

The difference with the past (the past being 32-bit devices) is that they remain usable, but the experience is definitely degraded.

My 9.7-inch iPad Pro has slight keyboard lag on iOS 12, apart from that it is fine, but it didn’t have it on iOS 9.

My iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12 has no lag at all, since it’s the original version. People report keyboard lag on that device when updated, too.

Sadly, I think that keyboard lag is here to stay.

I have same problem with laggy keyboard on 13 pro max.. It is simple very annoying I hope for a fix

I just asked my wife and she has had zero issues with her iPhone 13 mini on iOS 17.

I bought a brand new iPhone 13 mini. It had iOS 15 on it, but I decided to update to iOS 17.

Basically, I ruined the phone. Lol, I just upgraded from a first generation iPhone SE (that's the one from 2016!), but this iPhone 13 mini is slow and laggy as hell now. My 2016 iPhone SE is completely smooth on iOS 15.

Very, very disappointed. This is absolutely ridiculous. Apple is doing this on purpose I think!
Wow, I actually did the same. After updating my 13 mini to 17.1 I swapped SIMs with my old Gen 1 SE running 15. As I said in another thread, just another bug ridden release by Apple.

Over time you probably wouldn't notice the gradual slow down, but when you go back and use something that has 15 on it, it's quite jarring how much better it is.

If you do a fresh install of Windows 98 and browse the circa 2000 internet with static html and no javascript it's really fast too. That doesn't mean that Microsoft is intentionally slowing PCs with each OS update.
