A little bit of digging turned up that dot5 is owned by Enom, Inc., which appears to be a pretty well established registrar and web host. You're right that the issue probably wouldn't be worth pursuing legally -- I doubt any lawyers would be willing to take it since the potential pay off would be so small -- but for those trying to get a refund, the threat of a lawsuit may be enough.
