Considering I've actually had an Apple Store employee once tell me one of the great things about AppleCare is that you have a whole year to decide whether or not to buy it, so that if something goes wrong during the course of the first year you can always make the decision to get AppleCare and get it fixed.

So at least by your definition, this Apple Store employee was basically telling me to commit insurance fraud?

A product warranty and an insurance policy are two totally different things. Buying an insurance policy on an already damaged item and then filing a claim is fraud, pure and simple.

No that's totally different - in the scenario you outline the Mac is UNDER WARRANTY and you can choose to extend that WHILE IT'S UNDER WARRANTY. Your example is in the context of warranty coverage, not damage with no insurance and then purchasing it.

so I went to Apple, and they said since they don't repair iPads, the replacement cost is trading in my iPad + $419. Yes, that's right, Four Hundred and Nineteen Dollars. They even went so far as telling me that it's a fantastic deal to get a 64gb ipad 3G for $419! Except, it's not like buying one for that price, it's simply fixing an issue for that price. So long story short, if you drop an ipad (any ipad they said) it's going to cost you at least $419.

After much speaking to multiple people at AppleCare and then Customer Relations @ Apple, I finally was told to do it through them via fedex and they would refund half the cost. Thanks :apple:

I would not count on that. Sounds kinda odd that they would refund half just cause you do it fedex. If it is cheaper that way why not only charge you half price to begin with. I venture to say that after it's over and you ask for your refund they don't have any idea what you are talking about. Ask to get it in writing.

Also, I know it sucks to have to lay down that much money but it really is a pretty good deal. They don't have to do this, they could just say sorry you'll have to buy a new one. If they repaired them it would probably be about the same since basically the whole thing would have to be gutted and transferred to the new back. I know it's hard to swallow, but be thankfull it's not going to be $829+ tax to fixit.

I actually can't believe that the thing bent like that! I really would have thought that not possible. And the screen did not break? That is pretty wild. I think most likely Apple will exchange it out for you. I would be really surprised if they did not. Let us know.

Why would you think apple would exchange that out? It is obviously "accidental damage" which they specifically state is not covered under apple care. As far as they damage, uh it's aluminum. Aluminum bends easily compared to other metals. Not as bad as gold, but nowhere near as strong as steel. It acted exactly as I would expect that material to act in a fall onto a hard surface. I am surprised the glass did not crack.

Would you mind clarifying that you mean? Refund half the cost of the fedex or half of the $419? What's your final cost going to be? Are they offering you special compensation, and if so, how come?

you see! you see!
this is why you shouldn't go to the bathroom, watching porn on your iPad!!
with the lube, your ipad will just fly out your hand like a bar of soap.

I don't think Apple warranty will cover that.

That's different because during that first year you have warranty coverage.

Seriously? You BROKE your ipad and VOIDED its warranty. Anything less than $829 is a good deal. Your math must really suck. You realize 419 IS half price right (granted its off by 4 dollars but seriously...)

No that's different. That's a warranty, not insurance. AppleCare warranty only allows you to get extra warranty coverage for a year (i believe with the iPad). So you have a year to extend your AppleCare. Insurance allows you to replace broken items, if they were covered at the time you had the item. To purchase an insurance policy AFTER the item is already broken is committing insurance fraud.

Also, this is the exact reason why I bought the squaretrade warranty on day one. Somehow, I knew a replacement was gonna cost a fortune.

Edit: LOL! I didn't see page 2 which is ripe with the difference between Insurance and AppleCare.

It's also called customer service, maybe a novel concept to some. Fact is, it wasn't my decision that apple does not fix or sell all the parts for the iPad. They decided to not make parts available, so therefore, they replace them with a refurb unit.

Why is it people here are so quick to want to pay full price for a fix? Imagine taking your Ferrari to the dealership, and them telling you "Well, we're sorry your door won't open since you wrecked it, but that's your fault, since we don't sell parts, it's going to cost you $110,000 to fix the problem."

Sound ludicrous? It is, in fact, car manufacturers by law cannot do exactly what Apple is doing in this situation. They are required legally to sell parts for 10 years. Why? Because otherwise they'd charge you a total replacement cost.

As for the amount they said they'd cover, it was half the $419 price.

So...getting this fixed (replaced) for a little over $200 is actually a really good deal. Though I do wish we could purchase accidental add-on insurance to AppleCare.

You can, just not with Apple. I did mine threw square trade.

Holy ****! How the **** did that not crack and what ******* force did you exert on it that it bent like that?

WOW

your metaphor does not hold water. first off, yes there are laws and that is why car mfg. must do this. 2nd, as i tried to explain in an earlier post. many electronic devices now a days do not lend themselves to repair due to the way they are assembled. In todays world, small & slim is king. well, making these things like that require assembly with materials like tape, glue, compression joints. Many times opening these for repair either ruins the components or the labor to do it is so high it does not make sense. take the new apple wireless mouse for example. you take the top off of that and you will rip ribbon cables and such since it is all glued together. it would cost more to fix anything on it than to buy new. same with your car scenario, wreck that ferrari and the sum of the parts + labor can well exceed price of new. in that case no ferrai dealer is gonna say, well give you a new one for half the price.

be happy with your deal and be more careful next time. if this is such an issue buy an insurance plan for it.

I went with them because they also cover theft and loss.

I would see about listing an ipad with your insurance policy.

For the op, if you already have a listed item policy, then you may have an automatic 30 days...I do. New items are covered from the date of purchase even if I haven't called to add it.

Even though i have listed policy, this is one of the reasons why I want to buy from best buy.

Ok, first. Apparently you can't figure out the difference between a $900 dollar ipad you can fit in your man-purse and a $110,000 car you can SIT INSIDE.

So I will stick to your horrible analogy.

You TOTALED your ipad by dropping it. Notice how the entire frame of it was bent?

Ok, now lets pretend you rammed your car into a wall and bent the entire frame of it, and totaled the car.

You can't bring that car back to the dealership and ask them to fix it for you for free, or for just a fraction of the cost.

If anything, you will be happy as hell when your insurance company gives you back even 25% of the cost (because remember, it was YOUR fault).

So now lets say you were careless, rammed your car into a wall for funsies and then took that car back to the dealership (because you never bothered to get insurance) and they said "****, I would love to give you a brand new car for half price right this second!"

I think thats a good deal and good customer service.

You are not entitled to a new ipad because of your carelessness. Please stop whining.

Stop being so difficult. You were careless. You know you were careless, yet you still want a replacement, free of cost.

Nah. There are people out there who would love to pay full price for a 64gb, if only they could get there hands on it.

Count yourself lucky Apple is even hearing you out, Mr. Beckham.

read the comment posted by lionheartednyhc, and read it several times !

you are just complaining because you are frustrated, and try to take it out on Apple.
for **** sake they offered you a great deal for a very low price, and you are dumb enough to complain about it !

are some people just born stupid !?

What did you expect?!!

You buy a new Jeep. You have an accident. You don't have insurance (Squaretrade). So you go back to the dealer and say you want a new Jeep because... why???

This is very interesting. I was checking out of a hotel and my ipad fell while it was in the Apple Case. It landed on the tile floor and I got the EXACT same damage as you. Same spot, same type of bend and everything. Very weird.

Anyways, I actually had a little more luck than you so maybe you should try another apple store? I went in to the store told them what happened and that I had only had the iPad for 4 days when this happened. The genius went and spoke to a manager and came back with a brand new one for me. I really couldn't believe it!!!! So nice of them and totally unexpected.

After that I went and ordered the Marware Eco-Vue. Unfortunate that I guess that won't help either.

nice pic ^^

if the internals are still functioning, you can always try repairing it yourself. Possibly getting it halway apart will allow you to gently try to bend back the aluminum, or reposition the switch.

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad-Teardown/2183/1

You always have the Apple way as a backup, assuming you don't accidentally snap the thing in half or something.

Can't hurt to try tho. It's YOUR device, you can do w/e you want with it. . .including attempt repairs :D
