I don't believe anyone has mentioned credit card Insurance yet. Most major credit cards cover you 60-120 days even for accidental damage or theft. Check your terms and conditions.

My bank covered me for a mobile phone I left in a NYC taxi a few years ago.

hi guys, i have broken my power button also. did u find any way to DIY replace it? maybe an app to power down the ipad?

Take responsibility. You broke it.

As for your analogy - they are giving you (basically) 50 percent off the cost of a brand new and equal device. Oh yeah - except their's works.

Maybe you should stop thinking of it as paying for an expensive replacement and think of the 419 as parts and service.

You say that you didn't choose that Apple doesn't have parts or fix iPads. I'm telling you that they do. Parts and Service is $419. Feel better about the cost now? 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Sound like good service to me...

I'm just surprised the OP didn't claim to have no idea how it got damaged... "I just left it on the night stand...."

So is it standard proceedure for Apple to offer a half price replacement for any damage? Thats good news if true.

As to possible damage, i've decided to go with a super padded sleeve for my Ipad. I will keep it in the sleeve at all times when walking. The Ipad will be almost naked with just a rear hardshell when used, then go right back into the thick sleeve before transporting anywhere. I now see this will be safer than the Leather Folio idea!
