Personally I find it a bad deal right now, but if they cut just $300 off the price suddenly it willl be so much more attractive.

I'll wait, my guess is that it will happen in March as a sort of "Powermac clearance sale" :)
If the person needs (or wants) a system now, waiting to March to maybe save $300 could be a stupid idea. I doubt there will be a PowerMac sale in March.

Also, how much time will be wasted because the original poster didn't get the PowerMac? Not having what one needs can waste time and or money. Looking at it from this perspective, maybe saving a little bit of money in 3 months doesn't seem worthwhile.

i'd really not like to wait until march, of course, i don't NEED it, but it's a very high want! I feel if I get the Dual Core, it might satisfy me for longer and better than the Dual Proc. Since it is true that AGP is not going anywhere anymore in the future and neither is DDR RAM. So maybe that upgrading factor alone is worth it. And the fact that I can add as much RAM as I want and then switch it over to whatever system i buy in a few years

Dual 1.8

As I try to look for monies, I seem to not be able to find any! I don't know if I can afford the new dual cores. But I can get a Dual 1.8, 512 RAM, 80GB HD, Nvidia 5200 64mb for $1399. Is this a good deal? Or should I really try to look for something else? I AM getting a powermac, and I want a dual, but the rest is undecided. I just don't know if I have the cash to go for the dual cores.

I don't think that's a great deal. If it's got an 80 GB hard drive I'm guessing it's one of the later dual 1.8s, the "crippled" ones, and it has no upgrades. If it's new or refurbished with a full warranty, maybe. But otherwise, I don't think it's a great deal... not awful, but not great.

I thought the "crippled" Power Mac was the late single 1.8 G5.

It's not that good of a deal. I think I paid $1599 for mine brand new when it was a current model. It's a great machine, so if you could talk the price down a couple hundred more dollars, I'd say go for it. Current Power Macs are more powerful of course, but it still beats any other current Mac model, and it's a lot more upgradeable than an iMac or Mac mini too.

Well it's not a friend or anything. It's at macofalltrades::

http://www.macofalltrades.com/G5_1_8GHz_Dual_Processor_512_80GB_SuperDrive_56K_p/g518dp1.htm

I'm not sure which it is. I'm hoping it isn't crippled obviously. And I'd rather get a refurbed one from Apple, but the past few weeks, there has been nothing on Apple's refurb website. Also, would I notice much performance decrease from this config. vs the Dual Core 2ghz?

Quick advice needed!!

So the Powermacs G5 Dual 2ghz is on apple's refurb website for right now, so they could go any minute! Need some help. It is $1549 and it is the crippled version, 4 RAM slots, pci, is that the only difference? Is it a good buy? Should I go for it?

Thats not a bad deal, but i have a feeling PPC machines and the prices are going to take a nosedive this coming year plus you have no idea whats coming next month. Though i dont expect Powermac to be changed i do expect a all new product and with Apple you just dont know. Maybe two or more? There will be more refurbs, trust me. This will be a big year for Apple.

Well I don't think I want to wait more than a month. I'd really like to buy it within the week. So at $1549, it's a $250 difference than the current Dual Core 2ghz. Is the $250 really worth what all the dual core g5 has over this one?

What should I do? Last time!!

OK, last new thread. But I wanted to encompass everything I've looked at recently, promise!! I've been looking to buy the Power Mac G5 the past few weeks. I haven't decided what I should do. The $1799 price with edu discount is on the expensive side, but I just might be able to swing it if you guys can justify that the extra $250 from the refurbished PM Dual 2GHZ at $1549 is a raw deal. It is the crippled version, with only 4 slots of RAM and PCI. I am a student. I love technology. I love being able to do things fast, etc. I'm not really a huge photo, video guy, but I do some of it. But by no means am I a professional. So that's the question really. Is the $250 price difference worth it? Dual core, more RAM, pci-express, pci-x, better GPU, faster RAM, quieter, more efficient, less power requirements!! Is all that worth the $250 for a guy like me in your opinion? I do upgrade computers a lot, but I am just switching to the Mac, so I don't think I'll have the same habits of that since I can't really upgrade logic boards, cpu's, etc. So I want to have this computer for a long time. Then if I got a Dual Core, I could just switch over the DDR2 RAM if I felt like it when I upgrade to the Intel Mac (which I don't plan on doing anytime soon) Like I said, I'd like to have this PC for at least 2-3 years. I am going to be going into Educational Technology field and I am a junior in college right now. I got the rest of this year, my senior year and a year of grad school to look forward to. I do Advanced Audio production as well. I know this is a long, rambling, but any advice would help a lot. I am also waiting for my Apple Credit line card to come, which should be tomorrow, so I have a day or two to decide. Thanks for all your help!!

You might want to check out an iMac G5 vice the PowerMac.

The 17 inch is much cheaper. It's $1,199 with edu discount.

Plus you can upgrade the RAM and HD.

It will easily last you 2-3 years.

The All-in-One design is great for a dorm room.

Take the funds that you save by purchasing the iMac vice a PowerMac and put them towards the computer that you will purchase 2-3 years from now.

So I'm in the market for a Power Mac Dual G5, either the new ones that came out or the Revision B ones with 8GB max RAM (The good revision). I was wondering if I should get the new Dual Core 2ghz with educational discount for 1799 or should I get a refurbed Dual CPU 2ghz at the Apple Store for 1499.

I find it easier to compare items at the same price. For $1799 you get a dual core with basic equipment. For $1799 you get a dual CPU with lots of RAM and a nice big harddisk added. Adding $200 for RAM will always get you more speed than adding $200 for CPU speed.

Alternatively, compare one G5 with a nice screen and the cheaper G5 with a screen that costs $300 more.

Apple:

How about of those two?

mmmm so basically it boils down to a choice between

a girl with two heads or two girls?

I suppose it would depend on their personalities :p

I'd probably go for the dual core as the resale value would be better than the dual processor. No powermac is a safe 'future' investment at the moment as all the product lines will be intel by this time next year and powerpc resale value may fall because of it, but I think the dual core may hold it's own moreover the dual processor. Both great computers though. :)

i guess i'd get less ram with the dual core, but 8 slots, opposed to 4 with the dual 1.8. i'd get more hard drive, better vid card and OS cds with iLife. For $300 more. It would be new as well. I think I might be leaning toward the dual core. i was thinking about imac, because i could save a ton and sell my dell 2005fpw monitor for some extra cash. overall, i could probably get the 20 inch refurb imac for $1299- $350 for monitor. That's less than 1000 to get this::

512MB DDR400 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon 9600
128MB DDR video memory

from apple's refurb store.

So then the question is, how much would i miss the dual? Let's say $1000 for the imac and $1499 for that dual 1.8. Then what should i get?

while I agree about the future proofing concept, I must point out that you can put 16GB or more in any G5, just so long as you can get the RAM chips for that much memory. it's sort of like how Apple used to say the Alubooks have a max of 1GB memory and then at a revision they said the max was now 2GB, and it had nothing to do with any real changes they made, just that 1GB chips were now entering the mainstream market and they officially were supporting their use now

Except for this: the last time I checked, 2GB single sticks are not made for DDR3200, and probably won't ever be, since DDR2 is taking over.

Get the iMac. Save yourself some money. Spend the rest maxing out the ram to 2.0 GB, and uh. whatever else your heart desires.

well i got the dual 2ghz from apple's refurb site for just $1449. This is the 8 slots for RAM rev. B. I can't wait until it comes. Can't wait to have my mac again! It said 7-10 days it will be shipped but i checked the status and it shipped today! Just one day after my order. I'll keep you posted.

Advertised Specs:

Dual 2ghz
512 MB RAM
160gb HD
GeForce 5200FX
SuperDrive

Would I want to upgrade that vid card and ram? Which would be most important if I could only do one for now?
